Default Did anybody hear Dan Hawkins yesterday?

http://lioninoil.blogspot.com/2007/0...o-coaches.html

Just heard a soundbite from his press conference yesterday. It was outrageous.

He was talking about a parent complaining about the Buffaloes' short summer break in a letter. He was calm at first, then all of a sudden he starts on a hilarious tirade talking about "this is Division 1 football" and "if they don't like it, they can play intramurals".

This press conference beats Dennis Green's infamous one, trust me.

It was last week on Signing Day. Can't believe it's taken this long to become a "story", Buff fans have known about it since the day he said it.

Anyone with knowledge of Hawk and the context of his statements would hardly qualify his comments as outrageous.

Start taking Colin Cowherd and Jim Rome's opinions and "facts" at face value...what shocks me is that these two are complete idiots yet people hang on their every word for their sports information and opinions.

That was built up to way more than it actually was.

Humerous, but not even in Dennis Green's league.

Daily MHSM column

Real "Hawk Love"
Under Dan Hawkins, only the strong are surviving
by James Merillatt

Perhaps I’m intoxicated by the holiday, caught up in the euphoria of the prospect of paying double for a meal simply because it comes with two glasses of Moet. But on this Valentine’s Day, I’ve come down with a serious case of Hawk Love.

A week ago today, Dan Hawkins introduced CU’s class of 2007 at luncheon for the program’s boosters. While the ballyhooed batch of incoming freshmen garnered most of the attention that day, it was the coach’s answer to a non-recruiting question that convinced me that Colorado was back on the right track.

In recent weeks, it was reported that four CU players were leaving school. This news was met with either doom (Colorado’s going to be thin in the trenches) or glee (the Buffs are unraveling) by various media outlets. At the luncheon, the head coach was asked about the latest exodus.

His response was reason for CU backers to rejoice. Not only was his answer honest, reason enough to celebrate in Boulder, but the mindset it outlined was a breath of fresh air.

“We are trying to establish a foundation here of a work ethic,” Hawkins answered thoughtfully. “The University of Colorado isn’t for everyone. Division I football and Big 12 football aren’t for everyone.”

But he didn’t stop there. Hawkins elaborated on what that statement meant when he continued to address the departures of Quinton Borders, Paul Backowski, Jeremy Hauck and Tom Grubin with candor.

“Some of these guys hit different junctures that they decided they shouldn’t be here,” the coach added. “Some guys decided it’s a little too tough, a little too hard, a little too demanding.”

Maybe that’s a little harsh. Perhaps Hawkins should have taken the high road and not provided the true reason why a quartet of Buffs bailed on the program. But there’s an underlying fact contained within his comments that is music to the ears of Colorado fans.

Hawkins and his staff are working their players hard. They are intent on winning and they are taking their mission to turn CU around very seriously. That’s sometimes painful process isn’t for everyone. And that’s okay. Weeding out the weak is always a part of the rebuilding process.

But the good news didn’t stop there. In fact, it was just beginning.

Hawkins went on to cite an anonymous letter he had received from the thorn in every coach’s side – meddling parents. This time around, the overly involved mom and dad told the coach that they were “a little bummed out” because their son would only be getting two weeks off after the semester instead of the three-week hiatus that typically precedes the start of summer conditioning drills. This complaining, the audacity to gripe about a lack of vacation, set the second-year coach off.

“It’s Division I football! It’s the Big 12! It ain’t intramurals,” Hawkins declared, his voice approaching a decibel level that Howard Dean would admire. “You get two weeks after finals, one week at the Fourth of July and one week before camp starts; that’s a month! And we’re a little bummed out? Go play intramurals, brother!”

Yes, Hawkins is a fun-loving guy. Sure, he’ll parachute out of airplanes and ham it up for boosters. But at the end of the day, as his Wednesday rant revealed, he’s really a my-way-or-the-highway coach. He’s a man who knows there’s a right way to do things, a path that typically involves outworking your competitors. And he’s instilling these values at CU.

In today’s day and age, “love” is typically only associated with acts of kindness. It’s a hug, a kiss or a pat on the back. But as past generations will tell you, sometimes real love stems from a swift kick in the rear end when you need it – the type of discipline you hate at the moment, but learn to appreciate in hindsight.

For me, I’m thrilled to see this old-fashioned way of teaching is once again a part of the Colorado football program. If it causes a few kids to quit along the way, so be it. I’m glad to know that up in Boulder, the Buffs are getting a little “Hawk (Tough) Love.”

Rome got back on my good side after his rant over the "who cares even in LA" after what's his name signed out there.

thanks...too bad the three sock puppets in that ESPN clip could not put the rant into context.

either way, I don't have a problem with what he said.

Good for Hawkins. He'll find out who's in Boulder to work and who's in Boulder to goof off. He's taking the same attitude that Kansas State coach Ron Prince took. Some players left our program, but that's tough...

I have more respect for coaches that reveal their inner side and don't hold anything back. It's real.

Even though CU had a down year, I am pulling hard for Hawk to turn it around in Boulder. He's easy to pull for.

Sounds like a passionate footbal coach. One that is looking to separate the men from the boys.

You a K-State fan? I'm an Auburn fan. That's going to be one interesting season opening game on the Plains.

I think AU has their hands full w/ K-State.
