Chargers to interview 4 for coaching job 2 hours, 34 minutes ago
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070214/...L7BveHaJAN97QF The Chargers received permission Tuesday to interview four candidates to replace fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer, including one-time San Diego offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner was offensive coordinator with the Chargers in 2001. He's currently the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. He interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys' head coaching job that went to Wade Phillips, the Chargers' former defensive coordinator. The Chargers also received permission to interview Hall of Famer 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, both of whom interviewed for the Cowboys job. The fourth candidate is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The Chargers did not say when the candidates would be interviewed. Schottenheimer was fired Monday night by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a "dysfunctional situation" between Schottenheimer and general manager A.J. Smith. The Chargers were an NFL-best 14-2 before losing |

Isn't Rivera famous for his Tampa 2 defense? I admit that I am not the most knowledgable, but I was under the impression that the Tampa 2 was run out of a base 4-3 set. Since San Diego now has one of if not the strongest front 7 in football from their 3-4 base, I can't see how Rivera makes any sense. It owuld be like saying "Hey, we love what you've done as a coach. Now change your entire philosophy."

I saw Mike Ditka in the SD airport arriving from Chicago last night. Maybe he's here to convince them to trade all their picks for Adrian Pederson.

Here's another hater just like the rest of you donkey fans. I suggest you read it: http://www.pe.com/sports/breakout/st...4.2513e0c.html 12:10 AM PST on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 GREGG PATTON "Six years ago, the bumbling San Diego Chargers gave up the top pick in the NFL draft -- everyone's consensus choice was Michael Vick -- and dropped to fifth, where they took a chance on LaDainian Tomlinson, one of those dime-a-dozen running backs who get overrated every year. Story continues below The dunderheads did get an undersized, junk-ball throwing quarterback, Drew Brees, in the second round. Three years ago, the morons went ahead and drafted Eli Manning with the No. 1 pick, even though Manning vowed he would never play in San Diego, presumably because the organization was so pathetic. Forced to trade him, the Chargers used their multiple picks that year and the next to acquire sidearm thrower Philip Rivers, place-kicker Nate Kaeding, veteran tackle Roman Oben and linebacker Shawne Merriman. Last winter, after Brees had developed into the perfect quarterback to lead the Chargers' surprisingly diverse offense, the boneheads allowed him to walk away as a free agent, gambling that untested third-year pro Rivers would be up to the task. Now the goofy Chargers have bungled the firing of Coach Marty Schottenheimer. Whether you are a fan of Schottenheimer for leading the team to an NFL-best 14-2 record, or think his postseason failures and the one-and-done loss to New England last month warranted a boot in the pants, you have to admit team president Dean Spanos and general manager A. J. Smith really blew it this time. A month after telling him he could stay, then watching the team's stable of talented assistants depart, and the best outside coaching candidates take jobs elsewhere, the dopey Chargers suddenly find themselves in mid-February searching in the weeds for a new head coach. I suspect this is the final piece of idiocy the franchise needs to get itself over the top. The last pratfall that will lead them to the promised land. Yes, the final misstep in a long line of highly criticized moves that will make the crazy Chargers a Super Bowl team. Me, I'm done calling them names. If the Chargers front office is out to lunch, well, maybe we ought to find out what they're eating and drinking, and order it up. Every time I think they've driven the bus off the bridge, out come the James Bond wings and away they go. The Chargers' plotters and schemers are either the craftiest crew of brilliant thinkers in the NFL, or the luckiest sons of guns to ever throw a dart at a draft chart. The Chargers were criticized for letting Drew Brees go and putting the team in the hands of then-untested Philip Rivers (right). Either way, I'm on board. If I don't have anything nice to say about the geniuses in San Diego, I won't say anything at all. Mom would be so proud. If they bring in the great underachiever, Norv Turner, or backslider Dennis Green, to coach, I'll button my lip and marvel at the 15-1 season. If they go with a 27-year-old junior college assistant coach, I'll assume he's the next Tony Dungy. Heck, if they hire Denzel Washington because they liked the job he did with the Titans, it's OK by me. It's pretty obvious by now, the Chargers front office can do no wrong. Maybe the players and coaches can have their airhead moments at the worst time, say, in a postseason game against the Patriots. But the guys upstairs? They've been perfect for six years. Drink a toast to that, 1972 Miami Dolphins. Spanos cited the ongoing "dysfunctional" relationship between Smith and Schottenheimer as the reason he had to let the coach go, as if it were a bad thing. In the same way that dysfunction has fueled every money-making TV reality show, it seemed to work with the Chargers, too. But we can only assume the brass knows best. Its unblemished recent track record should also be great news for Chargers fans who live in fear that the team is moving just as soon as the last bobbled stadium deal falls through or gets voted down. It may look like the Chargers aren't really trying, or may be sabotaging efforts to keep their game in town, but looks, as we've learned, can be deceiving. I don't think they're going to Los Angeles, Anaheim or Las Vegas. I think they're going straight to the Super Bowl. It doesn't matter that there's barely anyone left on the staff that guided them to the best record in history, or that a new coach may tinker poorly with one of the NFL's most talented rosters. The important thing is the front office still has nearly a year to toss in a few more staggeringly deft gambits disguised as colossal gaffes. I can't wait to keep my mouth shut." Gloat away losers. You dont get the photo. WHoever comes in will be a puppet of AJ Smith. That is why Marty is gone. Nobody questions AJ being a GM for getting draft picks and good trade value. You really think all this is healthy for the team? You guys lost OC, DC, TE coach and head coach. Who is left out there? One month behind if you were going to do a firing of Marty. Enjoy the offseason. Chargers are bound for the best record but this all cant help. We are loving any turmoil.

Dude, the point is, we've been hearing these doomsday predictions for the last six years. We've also heard AJ smith and the front office being bashed by the media every off season for years. Last year we were doomed because he let go of Drew Brees. Same as now, you losers were gloating all over this board. The funny thing is, if Marty was around, we would still be doomed around here because he is a choker right? A no win situation. Not to worry, we will be dropping down the hammer on the AFC west again next year. Last edited by BreesLightning; 02-14-2007 at 04:56 AM.. |

Marty helped improve the team from when he started but the seasons have been shotty form one season to another. Not saying Chargers will suck this coming year though. This is something totally different than what has happened in the last few years. I bet if i go over to your site, there will be a very mix feeling on all of this. Timing is everything. Maybe better now than later but coaches were "bolting" on the lame duck coach.
PLUS, read back on the comments. Not one neg thing except the photo. Admit it on AJ will have puppets running "his" show. That was the point of the photo and got you to react. Stick with what is discussed on this thread. |

Nice spin job. Noone is disputing the high draft choices or the rediculous stupidity of the NY Giants. Their hand was rather forced with Brees because of the very large signing bonus given Rivers.
The stone cold fact is none of these candidates are qualified to do anything more than hold Marty's clipboard or be a coordinator. I have watched football for almost 40 years, back to Vince Lombardi, and never in my wildest dreams would of dreamed a 14-2 coach would be fired. See puppets above. When you have to cobble together an entire new coaching staff this late, it's a recipe for disaster. We adjust the cogs and replace parts periodically, but generally, Denver has stability. Look, I'm no big Marty fan, but he's got 200 wins. People can talk all they want about Marty's playoff losses, but he's been the victim of late heroics many times. Notably Elway and now, Brady. Now your GM is a rooster owning the coop and strutting around. Not a good sign. Luckily for SD, with that record, there will be plenty of remaining fodder out ther drooling over landing a team this good instead of the typical basket case...see Oakland. |

Me personally, I am glad it happened now. I'll gladly give up winning less games next year to have the team ready come playoff time without "the cursed one". |

If one didn't know an better they'd think you fools had actually ever won something after that speech...
It's been 13 years since you won a playoff game and you're the only AFC West team without a Lombardi but we're the losers? Whatever...you're franchise empitomizes the word losers...they have for decades. The reason you have Tomlinson and Rivers is because you stunk so bad you earned the top pick in the draft, so revel in your big 2 AFC championships but just remember one thing...Jerry Jones and Al Davis have proven what happens when ownership or GM's can't keep their fingers off the team and refuse to empower the head coach. The truth is, no decent NFL coach is probably going to want to come to San Diego with a GM who has to meddle in the decisions a coach should rightfully make. This is a huge problem...personell can be changed and coaches come and go, but when ownership thinks a GM should have the power, that doesn't lead to positive results. Enjoy the puppet parade...maybe you can get Barry Switzer to come there. |

Odds are the Chargers will want to keep the 3-4 defense, so not sure Rivera is a good fit unless willing to adjust his defense to that. Turner is a journeyman, but I'm sure he'd focus mostly on offense and they would hire a DC to run the defense and keep it at 3-4. It it were me, Rex Ryan would be the choice.

Wouldn't it be interesting if he (Ryan) got his job then stole his brother to be his assistant HC and Defense Coordinator. AL Davis would go ballestic, and sue everyone. |

Yeah, because losing your 3 most important coaches will have no effect on your team whatsoever. I hoped you enjoyed your one good season, because the Broncos are going to once again, make the Chargers their b****. |

There is really big difference running a single unit vs the entire team.
