Default Gunman Shoots and Kills at Least 5 in Salt Lake Mall

So many defective people in this country, I guess it's not safe anywhere anymore.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Teen Gunman kills 5 in Utah mall
By JENNIFER DOBNER, Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY - A historic mall's winding hallways became a shooting gallery for an 18-year-old gunman in a trench coat who fired a shotgun randomly at customers, killing five and wounding four before being killed by police, authorities and witnesses said.

A police officer stands nearby as a body of a woman lies on the floor Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City. A man with a shotgun entered the shopping mall and began randomly shooting customers Monday night, killing five people and injuring at least four others before being killed, police said. (AP Photo/Douglas C. Pizac)

The shooter, whose name was not released, also was armed with a handgun and had several rounds of ammunition, Salt Lake City police Detective Robin Snyder said early Tuesday. No motive has yet been determined, she said.

For hours after Monday evening's rampage at the Trolley Square shopping mall, police searched stores for scared, shocked shoppers and employees who were hunkered down awaiting a safe escort.

Marie Smith, 23, a Bath & Body Works manager, saw the gunman through the store window. She watched as he raised his gun and fired at a young woman approaching him from behind.

"His expression stayed totally calm. He didn't seem upset, or like he was on a rampage," said Smith, who crawled to safety in an employee restroom to hide with others. She said the gunman looked like "an average Joe."

Killed were two 28-year-old women, a 52-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl, Snyder said. Four people were hospitalized — a man and a woman in critical condition and two men in serious condition, Snyder said.

Matt Lund was visiting his wife, Barbara, manager of the Secret Garden children's clothing store, when he heard the first shots. The couple and three others hid in a storage room for about 40 minutes, isolated but still able to hear the violence.

"We heard them say, 'Police! Drop your weapon!' Then we heard shotgun fire. Then there was a barrage of gunfire," said Lund, 44. "It was hard to believe."

They say officers treated everyone like suspects — ordering those hiding in storerooms, bathrooms or under stairwells, to lie on the floor with their hands on their heads until police were sure no one posed a threat.

On the way out, Lund said, he saw a woman's body face-down at the entrance to Pottery Barn Kids and a man's body on the floor in the mall's east-west corridor. "There were a lot of blown-out store windows and shotgun shell casings all over the floor," Lund said. "It was quite surreal."

The victims were found throughout the 239,000-square-foot shopping mall.

So i get to see a dead woman, and a moronic politicization of an issue that has no bearing on what happened.

I'm sick and tired of these trenchcoat punks. Two young women, a girl and a 52 year old man among the killed. Classy.

Even at Columbine, they thought they had an axe to grind...this was even more absurd and irrational. I hope there actually is a hell altho I'm no angel, I respect life. I hope he enjoys hanging out with other killers.

The second amendment has nothing to do with this. If someone else had been packing maybe he would of been taken down sooner.

Pretty soon you will have to go thru a metal detector everywhere. Stock up on ceramic glocks.

I think we are going to have to have more security at places where people gather. It's just too easy for these sick people to carry in weapons and start killing people.

I think it's just a matter of time before some terrorist is going to blow up some mall or movie house, etc... somewhere soon.

The problem is C-2 won't show up...just nails they might put in it. You could use composite nails too actually.

Strange new world indeed.

I'm going to go puke. The whole thing is just sickening.

What I find odd is that it hasn't happened already. If the terrorists are really
out to get us it would be so easy. The borders are wide open. Meth labs
are rampant. The same route illegals take the jihadists could take. The
same kind of labs that make meth could be used by the jihadists to make explosives.
It just doesn't make sense. I doubt homeland security is that good at
picking up these plots. Something just doesn't add up.

Wonder how long untill people start spinning this into a move against drugs/alcohol, or violent movies/games/music. Its not the kids fault, its never the kids fault, they already set it up, calling this thing an 18 year old a teenager and not a grown man.

I think there are many 18 year old males that don't qualify as "grown men".

And I think that some of the problems that create these kind of tragedy's are known, lack of parental supervision, kids having kids, etc...

But since it seems to be out there everywhere the question is what to do about it to try and protect people now.

We shop at that mall a bit, and are always eating down there. It's a nice mall - sort of similar to, say, a Cherry Creek Mall in Denver. It's older, but there are lots of trendy stores and restaurants there.

Friday, our next door neighbors' and good friends' pregnant sister, husband, and three kids were hit by a teen drunk driver. The mother and two of the kids (11 and 9) were killed. The father and one son (6) were taken to the hospital in critical condition. We spent the weekend with their kids at our house. The two families were close, so the kids were a bit of a mess. It was just a horrible tragedy.

So there was that, and now the Trolley Square thing. I don't think we know anyone that was there - the world isn't that small (knock on wood). But it's crazy to have it happen so close. The world can sometimes be pretty messed up, I guess.

I don't think that we can ban guns or alcohol for such situations - maybe we could ban teens?

Yeah and thats a tough call - pretty much firearms control becomes an issue here. But a lot of politicians would rather not deal with a tough issue like firearms and blame it all on entertainment, threatening my enjoyment of that stuff, which pisses me off lol.

EDIT: I don't know much about the issue of Gun control, but besides hunting grounds and the shooting range, why do people need them? Maybe they could keep ammunition at those places, and you can carry unloaded guns home for collection/purchase unloaded guns at the shop.

People have been killing themselves forever - what is with having to take innocent strangers out with you? Jump, stand on the tracks, whatever, but the idea of having to make a 'splash', become a story - we need to stop sensationalizing this, but I'm not sure how.

Very sad story. Our legal system is wack!
Let's lock up a kid walking down the street with drugs in his pocket, but continue to 'slap on the wrist' repeat drunk driving offenders. Until they kill an entire family, then we'll lock 'em up. But that kid with drugs in his pocket - 10 years - first offense. F'ed up and needs to change.

Glad to see your ok Dom, I thought of you last night when I didn't see you posting. It's about 13 blocks straight down from my house and we wondered about all the sirens.

Actually I was surprised that there was no one else packing. I mean this is Utah.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims. I can't imagine getting that call. And I know young people are going to be effected by this. You just never know.
