Default Return on Investment from 06 FA's

Interesting article.

http://www.boston.com/sports/footbal...rtment/?page=1

NFL free agency begins March 2, and teams are often lauded for making big splashes. Seldom examined, however, is how those splashes look a year later. Some teams manage to swim nicely after spending big. Others simply drown, with the Redskins having mastered the art.

75-100 percent return

Chiefs -- Paid big for cornerback Ty Law, who started 16 games and remains a playmaker and shutdown presence.

Colts -- Inked kicker Adam Vinatieri on the open market and reupped receiver Reggie Wayne.

Ravens -- Top deal for Trevor Pryce led to a 13-sack season, while re-signing Pro Bowl middle linebacker Bart Scott was crucial.

Saints -- Quarterback Drew Brees (six years, $60 million) was worth every penny.

50-74 percent return

Broncos -- Biggest move was re-signing defensive lineman Gerard Warren, while fellow lineman Kenard Lang (six sacks) was good value.

Chargers -- Biggest signing was safety Marlon McCree, who is considered a glue guy, although his lost fumble may have cost the team a spot in the AFC Championship game.

Cowboys -- A mixed bag, as receiver Terrell Owens (three years, $25 million) had a lot of drops and touchdown catches (13), while guard Kyle Kosier (five years, $15 million) was a wire-to-wire starter who was up and down.

Dolphins -- Spent in the middle range and landed starters in offensive lineman L.J. Shelton and cornerbacks Will Allen and Andre Goodman.

Eagles -- The insurance signing of quarterback Jeff Garcia helped salvage their season, and defensive end Darren Howard was a full-time starter.

49ers -- Veteran guard Larry Allen added leadership to the line and cornerback Walt Harris totaled eight interceptions as perhaps the league's best free agent bargain.

Lions -- Found a gem in defensive back-turned-receiver Mike Furrey.

Jets -- Spent wisely, as defensive lineman Kimo von Oelhoffen and cornerback Andre Dyson started all season.

Patriots -- Receivers Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney gave the team good bang for the buck, although Caldwell's drops in the AFC Championship game ended his season on a sour note. Re-signing guard Stephen Neal and defensive end Richard Seymour was important.

Law was almost useless this year IMO, sure he made some plays but he was burnt alot this season the word shutdown shouldn't be used.

Wow a defensive player in todays NFL got burnt a few times?

Law played some good football this season and was a big part of this Chiefs improved defense.

Law played well IMO and is easily top 10 CB in the league. The chiefs needed a good CB and they got the best available. They might have overpaid a bit, but then look at our roster and tell me we haven't overpaid for anyone.

Indeed. Every single FA that is signed this season there will be a post.

Wow, [insert team] really overpaid for [insert player]

Every...single...one.

Well other Chiefs players somewhere on that roster deserve a ****load of credit don't they. To be able to sign a CB that was "almost useless" and still improve that much is quite a feather in someone's cap.

We'll have to disagree then. But name 10 better CB's? I can't.

Sure he gets beat deep, but then so did Champ his first year here.

I remember getting to make fun of him alot when bob was around (ALOT) boob had high hopes for him so i payed attention to laws play and when the cheaps needed him on big plays (he failed) that's all i know. When you pay a guy that much you expect him to make the big plays.

The thing is Law is on his way down in play while Champ is still getting better. Law played pretty well last year, but I don't think he played as well as he did the year before. Age is catching him but lucky for us KC gave him a pretty good sized contract for a DB his age. I agree he is in the top 10 and still might be in the top 15 next year as well.

Next season will be another season...it is what it is.

You can admit it though. Calling Law "almost useless" was pretty foolish.

The truth shall set you free.

I know Pryce had a big year but what is strange is the few times I watched Ravens play I never even saw him make a play. That includes the Denver game. I couldn't even tell he was out there.

Who missed the playoffs?

Could you please pick a tense and stick with it? Your posts are pretty confusing to read.

Are you drinking?

Anyway, while someone puts Bronx to bed I was thinking about something last week.

I am excited about the play of our corners if we can get some more consistant and talented safety help. Knight still does good work...I am ready for Greg Wesley to be in street clothes. Benard Pollard and Jarad Page showed so many good things their rookies seasons...I think it will be a position of strength for us for years. Page needs a little work on his tackling...

Wesley should have been replaced years ago IMO. That guy always has been a huge liability for your defense.

The weird thing about him...and he did it some this year is he will make some crazy plays in huge points in the span of the game. Or totally dominate a big game leading to a win....but his act is done in KC I believe...I loved the guy when he was younger and even dislike him...its just time to move on.

I think our pass defense needs to get better but they made large strides. Lenny Walls had his role and did decent. Not great but decent.

We gave up less yards per game through the air this year than Denver did.

They need to get better but did good things.
