Default Dominic Rhodes or Michael Turner

I hadn't heard this yet, but SI reports Rhodes as a FA this year, I don't know if he is restricted or unrestricted. Here is the excerpt:

FREE AGENCY
First the good news: Even though defensive end Dwight Freeney's contract can void in March, he's not getting anywhere close to the open market. Colts general manager Bill Polian made it clear during Super Bowl week that he'll franchise Freeney (at a cost of $8.6 million for 2007) if Indy can't negotiate a contract extension with him before March.

And now the bad news: Indy won't be keeping all the players it prefers to. In no particular order of importance, the key Colts who are scheduled for free agency include both starting cornerbacks (Nick Harper and Jason David), both starting guards (Ryan Lilja and Jake Scott), both starting outside linebackers (Cato June and Rob Morris), running back Dominic Rhodes, and tight end Ben Utecht.

If that is true, it would allow us to potentially seek a top notch RB before the draft, freeing us up to focus on D-line. So, given the choice who would you rather have - Dominic Rhodes or Michael Turner? If I remember correctly, both have been in the league for a few years but have relatively low miles. Both have promise.

Trade Tatum and pick up Rhodes. Both have good speed, but Rhodes picks and slides better and is decent in blitz pick up. Turner would cost way too much.

Just because Domonic Rhodes had a good game yesterday doesn't mean that he's even close to the back that Turner is. Plus, Turner is about 6 years younger than Rhodes.

Rhodes was the beneficiary of a HORRID Bears offense and a very tired Bears defense. He's been a decent back up RB over the years and I'd throw a fit if we brought him in as a feature back because of one game.

Turner is a RFA, do we really want to send an early pick to SD for an unproven RB who runs behind one of the all time best blocking FBs, one of the biggest lines in the league, and is the change of pace to the league MVP?

Rhodes I'd be interested in. He's got pretty decent speed, good vision, and runs hard. If he can be signed for reasonable money he'd be good to team with Mike and Tatum, or trade Tatum if we can get value for him and draft a new project RB.

I should add...wanting to sign Domenic Rhodes is like wanting to sign Timmy Smith after his SB game against Denver in 87.

Before the playoff's I had my eye on D. Rhodes. But with his impressive post season and great Super Bowl, I fear he may have a higher price tag now.

I see Denver drafting a RB high, maybe round one if a player falls. I see off-season cap dollars going to both O-Line and D-line.

Rhodes had a real good rookie season in 2001, 1104 yards with 4.7 ypc on a very pass oriented Colts team. He's been stuck as James' backup since, getting 37, 53, and 40 carries in each year respectively from '02-'04. His play this year was pretty good, his ypc was artificially low because the Colts used him as a short yardage back, limiting the chance for break away runs.

Three years actually, Turner is 25 on the 13th, Rhodes turned 28 a little over two weeks ago.

Rhodes isn't the type of guy you'd want to bring in as a default feature back, but if we could get him as a reasonably priced veteran to compete with Bell & Bell and/or a rookie I'd be up for it.

I'm going with Ludo on Thomas Jones. Of the other two, I think Turner is better.

I wouldnt want either of those two. I like the idea of Thomas Jones although that probably wont happen either.

I dunno, the Bears front office is pretty stubborn and their fans have been on them for years about the 1st round picks - especially RBs - being busts. They seem pretty determined to make sure Benson doesn't turn into another Curtis Enis or Rashaad Salaam. They may get rid of Jones, thinking Benson's their answer to all the criticism.

Rhodes is far more proven in this league than Turner and he'll come with no compensation.

Turner will cost a 1st rd pick because SD will give him the 1st rd tender.

Jones will cost a 2nd-3rd pick that's even the Bears are looking to trade him.

IMHO Rhodes will be one of the best RB's available this year and will get a really good deal from someone.

Draft one... either late 1st day or early 2nd day... On the other hand Jason David being available makes me wonder if they don't get him to compete w/ Foxy for the #2CB spot... just a thought

Glad to see a few others were thinking Jones, too. He fits the Broncos well. He is a one cut downhill runner with both power and reasonable speed. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears trade him at all.

Noo just trade for Betts!!! Hes a great back who can do it all, give up a 2nd to the skins (they dont have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the draft!) Trade Tatum for a 2nd (hopefully) or a 3rd and we dont lose a thing. Betts and M Bell would be a potent backfield.
Betts is great at blocking and catching out of the backfield as well.

Mike Bell and draft pick. Our run game was also not that bad, our o-line fell apart the last 6 weeks of the season, thats a discipline problem, and not something that should be blamed on Tatum or Mike.

prolly not. one thing i can say for certain is that i unequivocally would NOT consider it for rhodes. he's a makeshift guy at best and even though we could get him for no compensation, he'd be much less productive than turner, IMO.

Rhodes isn't bad but Turner would be the better of the two as a every down back IMO.
