Default Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia

I notice this guy has not been mentioned much. This was the only profile I could find on him. Any Georgia fans? What's the story on Charles Johnson?

Charles Johnson is a defensive force that must be accounted for every second he's on the field. The 270+ pound defensive end racked finished with 9.5 sacks on the season as well as ranking tenth in college football in terms of tackles for a loss. A smart player who understands the game, Johnson has the ability to come right onto an NFL team and make an impact from day one. He's decided to enter the draft early and currently ranks as one of the top three defensive ends in this class. He should be selected around the top fifteen.

Quenton Moses was supposed to be this year's superstar on the Georgia DL, but Johnson came on strong outplayed him all year. It was a little bit of a surprise to see him declare for the draft. I think he is one of those guys whose stock will rise or fall dramatically based on the combine and personal workouts. Right now, based on his stats, it appears he would go between 15 and 45. If he does well in combine and workouts, he could go a little higher. If he does poorly, he could drop like a rock.

CJ is one guy I'm keeping a close eye on. He was dominant this year, and outplayed Moses every time I saw Georgia play. A Georgia fan I know believes that he was more dominant that Richard Seymour was. I expect him to end up being a first round guy - and by April, I predict a number of Broncos fans will be hoping he is our pick.

Had a nice season and is a possible late 1st day selection. The question is how much did he benefit from Quentin Moses drawing a lot of attention across from him? Workouts will be big...could be a riser

Johnson was also listed at 6-2, 275 by the Georiga Bulldogs so hopefully he doesn't shrink at the NFL combine.

He's an underclassman, early draft news is almost exclusively from bowl games and practices that primarily invite seniors, so a lot of the underclassmen, Johnson included, don't have a lot of press out there yet.

Johnson has nothing to worry about though, he's a beast, athletic and fast enough to be a speed rusher but big enough to add a few more pounds and anchor the strong side. He's a hell of a prospect and he probably will be the third DE off the board, which should place him in the top 20.

Yeah, but the rub on Seymour coming out was that despite his all world talent he often didn't play up to it. He's stepped it up at the NFL level but its not a safe bet to assume every collegiate underachiever can do the same.

He is a player I would think about drafting at 21 . I would also think about trading down in draft to get him.He is only 6-2 and might be able to be drafted in the late first round.

I think I would take him at 21 if he is still avaible instead of trading down. I would rate Lynch ,Carriker and Johnson as my top 3 players that the Broncos might be able to draft.

exactly what i was thinking....moses drew all the double teams, leaving him in one on one situations...like you guys are saying workouts will be HUGE...he could be a good pickup though

Charles Johnson, Jamaal Anderson, and Jarvis Moss are high on my priority list to see at the combine as they were unable to participate in the All-star games. What remains to be seen is how they look against their contemporaries. They were all top performers on Excellent DL's.

What is interesting to me is that people assume that Moses allowed the focus to be off Johnson, but fail to see that even Mario Williams last year had three other first round DL around him at NC State. That means teams could not really gameplan exclusively to stop him either with Manny Lawson, Tank Tyler, and John McCargo playing on that DL. How NC State was so mediocre with that DL is unexcusable.

Point being that good DL make others better around them and Vice versa. The inverse is also true though in that Poor DL make other DL around them worse. Just watch the DL play last year without Pryce and Brown. They did get more sacks as a unit, but did they really play better. No. They were just as inconsistent as the year before, never made one game changing play all year, and were virtually nonexistent against good OL's and even some just average ones.

Football is a dependent sport where everyone on the field influences the play. Nowhere is that more eveident than on the lines. DEN's DL has got to get better for them to succeed consistently on defense. Having a great back seven and subpar front four can produce some good average results and win some games, but they are never going to be good enough on defense if they keep playing patty cake on the DL.

Dude I went to every state game I could with Super Mario there and they did exclusivly double team him...Tank Tyler was a huge clog in the middle helping Mario but Manny over pursued so much that teams realy dident see the need to double team him. Mario Williams was the guy that would take the double team and still make it to the QB. Its not fair to put Marios sucsess on the shoulders of Tank and Manny because Mario truely is a freak of nature.
