Council looks at high speed rail

By JOHN MORGAN
Star-Tribune staff writer
with staff reports Monday, January 08, 2007

A high-speed railway line connecting Casper with the rest of the Rocky Mountain region could speed closer to reality if the Casper City Council decides to fund a feasibility study at its work session today.

The $4.4 million study would look at connecting Casper and Cheyenne to a special rail line extending through Denver along Colorado's Front Range all the way to Albuquerque, N.M.

Casper's share of the study would be $50,000. Cheyenne is also being asked to contribute $50,000.

A timeline for the study calls for funding by July 2009. If everything goes according to plan, the rail line could be completed by 2016, according to information from the Rocky Mountain Rail Authority.

Bob Briggs, president of Front Range Commuter Rail, envisions high-speed rail lines running up and down the I-25 corridor, from Albuquerque to Casper and beyond, and possibly over to Yellowstone National Park. Another section of his proposed Ranger Express line would run along Interstate 70 from Grand Junction to the Denver International Airport.

Briggs said the three-state region of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico is going to have a total population of 10 million people by 2015, and desperately needs high-speed passenger service to avoid expensive gridlock on the region's streets and highways -- as well as tremendous congestion in airports including DIA. He estimates that his proposed system could move 26 million commuter trips a year between Pueblo and Fort Collins by 2015.

“The key question is whether there is the political will to do this,” Briggs said in November.

A big step would be construction of new north-south rail lines out on the eastern plains of Colorado, bypassing the built-up Front Range and freeing the Front Range rail lines for passenger service.

Briggs wants to use existing BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad tracks and right of way.

The feasibility study will look at train traffic, tracks, topography and much more to determine whether trains could operate at 90 mph or faster for 75 percent of the time.

In other business, the council is expected to discuss adjusting fees for the use of city parks, athletic fields and tennis courts.

Also on the agenda, Guy Padgett is scheduled to be sworn in as a city councilman by Municipal Court Judge Robert Hand. Padgett, who has served on the council since 2003, recently won re-election for his seat in Ward II, but was out of the state on vacation during last week's meeting when the other new council members were sworn in.

This afternoon's meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. in the council's meeting room in City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

Star-Tribune correspondent Brodie Farquhar contributed to this report.

That's just great. Now all the single females can get out of Wyoming easier. Those Casper politicos must want to turn the state back into free range.

one of the reasons I think it will go through is the lack of workforce , people just dont want ot olive in wyoming , too cold , too windy , too spread out ............but we need workers bad .High speed rail could solve alot of our problems , imagine living in Denver , working in Casper , saves gas , less traffic ,and you cna live where you want ...............

how about those who want to work in wyoming also live in Wyoming. Exception being those who subcontract in Wyo.

And to avoid the population in the great state of Colorado to grow any more, how about we put a fence up and don't allow those fckin Californians, Texans, and Easterners to come here? Bastards. I wish we could deport the ones we have now.

I loved taking Amtrac from Evanston to Denver. Seriously it was a great ride. It didn't follow the interstate route through rock springs and cheyenne. Rather it dipped down into Colo and you'd go through the rockies. Beautiful ride.

Still, I don't think I'd like commuting on a train .... the wind'd prolly shut the thing down, and you'd be stranded on the plains and possibly blown into Nebraska.

When I lived in pittsburgh they had a trolley system that was pretty good, ran from Library, PA to downtown Pitt. It did its job. That would be a hell of a line from Casper to Albuquerque tho.

Both would be great but I've heard more about this section than a north/south route.

I know Denver has spent plenty of money on various studies. Always seems to hit another shelf but in Denver's defense they have been busy with the T-rex light rail project already.

I don't know Spider if this thing ever gets off the ground you may need to buy some land outside of town before all the Californians like CBF1 decided to venture up your way on an land grab. Might even be me. !

If we can't deport all the imports here in cali (i barely even know anyone born here) then you can't build no god damn fence.

Believe me, the people leaving here are only leaving cause there is no more room.
