Shanahan pledges support

An emotional Mike Shanahan said today that the entire Broncos team will be flying to Texas for the funeral Saturday of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams.

Williams was killed after leaving a nightclub early Monday when bullets fired from an SUV hit his Hummer limo.

Shanahan, visibly broken up, praised Williams as a great role model and athlete.

"You never know why God takes somebody, but I know one thing, he got somebody very special in Darrent," he said.

Shanahan said Williams was always upbeat, always a fierce competitor and - for such a young player at just 24 - consistent on the field.

"He said, 'Coach, you can count on me making the play,"' said Shanahan.

"This guy was undersized at 5'8", said Shanahan, but his size made him quick, and a great playmaker.

"Everybody feels about Darrent the way I do," he said. "I don't think he had a guy that wasn't his friend. It's just the way he lived life. He had a smile on his face.

Shanahan said that he will speak at Saturday's funeral, at the request of Williams' mother.

"There are so many good stories about Darrent, his personality, his drive, his feeling for his kids. He made sure his Mom was taken care of."

Shanahan was unable to answer some of the questions posed by reporters at Dove Valley. At one point, when asked what he'd discussed with Williams mother, he struggled for several moments, then said, "Maybe in a little bit I'll be able to tell that story."

"He's in a better place right now, and it's hard to understand why he's gone," said Shanahan. "He was a good man. He's up in heaven right now."

A memorial fund has been set up by the team:

The purpose of the fund is to benefit Williams' two children for future educational and health needs.

I think they'll be needing this in years to come. From what I'm hearing today, his mom's house cost him something like 400k when Darrent was still on his rookie contract. It's not like he was making Champ money yet. The money will be there, but it won't be there forever.

I imagine that he will ... It will be interesting to see what the team does to pay tribute to DWill once things have settled down. I'm sure there will be something at the season opener.

I just emailed the heads of NFL.com the following. Who knows if they'll even consider it.

"To Whom it may concern......

I am an avid NFL.com reader and supporter and for the most part, I love the site. However, I think you guys have severly dropped the ball in a recent news story. Please allow me the time to get my point across and ask a favor.
As you well know, Darrent Williams was brutally murdered early new years day. As a life long fan of the Denver Broncos, my heart was totally ripped out. I think I speak for all the fans of the Broncos when I say that. NFL.com, along with Espn.com and the ESPN television broadcasts chose to bury this story into the middle of your news coverage. Why? Who knows. Maybe because Darrent was a class act on the field and cared for the kids of the Denver community. He wasn't terrell Ownes who, if he blinks, you guys make the lead story.
I can't change the fact that you guys dropped the ball on this tragic story. Neither can you. You can make up for it though......
Not only were the hearts of the fans, his teammates, and his family's ripped out, Darrent left behind 2 young children.
I think it would be a tremendous help if you guys would post on your lead page the information for the "Darrent Williams Children Fund". The information is as follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A memorial fund has been set up by the team:

The purpose of the fund is to benefit Williams' two children for future educational and health needs.

Contributions can be sent to:

Darrent Williams Children s Fund

c/o Denver Broncos

13655 Broncos Parkway

Englewood, CO 80112

Once again, I'm disappointed you guys decided to bury a story that I thought should have dominated the entire day, if not the entire week. But, I guess the firing of Jim Mora and Dennis Green was more important."
