Lelie trade produces third-, fourth-round picks
Compensation taking shape By Bill Williamson Denver Post Staff Writer Article Last Updated: 12/26/2006 09:31:08 PM MST The Broncos' compensation for trading wide receiver Ashley Lelie will become official Sunday. They will get two draft picks from Washington for their part in the three-way deal in August that also included Atlanta. Denver will receive Washington's third-round pick in 2007 and a fourth-round pick from the Redskins in 2008. With the Redskins drafting anywhere from No. 3 to No. 10, the Broncos will reach their goal of getting a high third-round pick for Lelie. Denver was telling potential trading partners all summer it wanted the equivalent of a high third-rounder for Lelie, a former first-round pick. Now the Broncos will get two picks. The compensation is based on the draft value chart NFL teams use. The Broncos will finish anywhere from No. 18 to No. 27 in draft order - but could draft No. 31 or No. 32 if they advance to the Super Bowl. The Redskins (5-10) will draft high. So when the draft order is finalized after Sunday's conclusion of the regular season, it will become official that Denver receives the two picks from Washington. Denver sent Lelie, who was holding out, to Atlanta in the three-way trade. The Redskins got running back T.J. Duckett from Atlanta. Duckett has not been a big producer for the Redskins, playing in nine games this season and carrying 35 times for 136 yards and one touchdown. The extra third-round pick will give the Broncos ammunition if they want to trade up. It was a high third-round pick that Denver packaged to improve its draft position and select quarterback Jay Cutler in April. Producing more points Cutler has been a boost to the Broncos' scoring. In four games, the rookie from Vanderbilt has led Denver to 101 points. In the Broncos' first 11 games, with Jake Plummer at quarterback, they scored 195 points. Denver was averaging 17.7 points before Cutler's promotion and is averaging 25.3 points with him in the lineup. Team records near Denver is on a record pace when it comes to being penalized. The Broncos have been penalized only 59 times in their 9-6 season, fewest in the NFL. They are on pace to commit the fewest penalties in team history in a 16-game season. They have been penalized 429 yards, putting the Broncos on pace for the fewest yards lost to penalties in team history. Denver's record for fewest penalty yards is 501 in 1960. In the San Francisco game Sunday, kicker Jason Elam likely will set the Broncos' record for season field-goal accuracy. He's at 92.3 percent this year (24-of- 26). He set the team record (87.1 percent) in 2003. Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey leads the NFL with nine interceptions. He would be the first Denver player since the NFL-AFL merger to win the interception title outright. Rookie reward Cutler is one of four finalists for NFL rookie of the week after his performance against Cincinnati. Cutler, the only player to throw at least two touchdown passes in each of his first four starts, won the award last week for his performance against Arizona. The other candidates this week are Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew, New York Jets running back Leon Washington and Tennessee quarterback Vince Young. Footnotes The Broncos have an average possession time of 29 minutes, 59 seconds. Their opponents are averaging 30:01 in possession time. ... Denver safety Sam Brandon is recovering from recent knee surgery for a torn ACL and is expected to be on pace to participate in training camp next summer. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_4904768 |

I'm hoping he will come limping back after the Great Michael Vick has them at 7-8.
He's under 500 yards, one TD. God he was an idiot. |

Lelie has to be so bummed out on his decision to leave after watching Cutler's rocket arm.

Lelie wanted out because he wasn't going to be the #1 reciever. Truth is, he's pretty bad at being a #3.
He screwed himself I'd say. Way to go man! ![]() |

I'm just glad he revealed himself before Cutler was able to make a star out of him.

What a MOVE!!!
I wonder if Sundquist is getting more involved with the GM spot cause it seems we are getting better at accumulating picks and moving them smartly. |

It's mind boggling what Snyder has accomplished this year. Millen is getting all the 'nfl exec of the year' hype, but I think Snyder has him beat. Millen's moves all turn out bad, but some of them make sense at the time. The moves the Skins make look retarded from 100 miles away.
