well, clearly the nba standard is not set by what other sports consider allowable. i've seen this argument before - it doesn't have much merit.

stern is obviously setting a tone that in the nba (notice, no nfl, nhl, etc.) these actions are unacceptable.

the suspensions and fines can be called in to question - but not against another sport. that's silly.

this is a pretty level headed take.

the biggest concern here is that thomas clearly had his hands in this, yet the league did nothing to him. i don't get that. if stern is truly set to remove fighting from the nba, then he must address a coach who advocates actions that may lead to this result.

My point isn't about the fines or suspensions. They are clearly warranted if more draconian than most precedent.

Every league has their own standards. My point is the double standard that appears to exist when NBA players get involved in an altercation. I don't care what Stern does, as that is his wont, Player's association grievances notwithstanding. It's the strange doublespeak that occurs where the NBA is full of thugs, but baseball can clear benches and hockey can have a fight every night.

Are the Cubs/White Sox thugs for their altercation? Or how about every hockey team at least once this year?

Well, in baseball... you've got a bunch of fat guys leaning on each other and yelling things.

In basketball, it looks a little more like fighting. A punch occasionally connects, though it's usually only a cheap shot because 37 guys jump in when two guys are squared off.

In hockey, they actually fight. Guys square up, land punches... and they do it on skates.

Your hockey comparison is terrible and you sound like someone who knows very little about the sport besides the fighting aspect. Basketball wouldn't be considered a league full of thugs (and I'm not saying it is) if guys squared off on a regular basis and it was an accepted part of the game, i.e. no suspensions when there is a fight. That's where your hockey comparison is so weak. It's a part of the game. Guys aren't automatically suspended just because they dropped their gloves like they are in basketball. That has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with what is an accepted part of each sport.

Well to be fair to rubaiyat, I don't think he was bagging on fights or the NHL. All he's saying, as I understand it, is the following:

-When two guys in hockey fight, nobody cares. It happened, move on.
-When there are baseball bench-clearing brawls, nobody cares. Same deal. It happened, throw out a few suspensions, no big deal.
-Fights are less common in the NFL, but when stuff like perhaps the Haynesworth incident happens, the guy is suspended, but it still blows over.

Yet in the NBA, you have a fight and all of a sudden, your league is full of rappers and gangbangers. I think rubaiyat's point is, why is this some "black eye" for the NBA, why are all NBA players instantly labeled as thugs, etc. I mean, a couple years ago, we had Pedro Martinez I believe get into a fight with that Yankees assistant coach, and it was more humorous than anything else. If that happens in the NBA, it's a travesty, an epidemic, etc.

If I'm wrong I apologize, and perhaps rubaiyat can better explain is point, but that is how I read it. I don't think he was trying to talk down on other sports.

Not to mention that fights in hockey many times serve a very important purpose. Accountability...et al.

One reason I think it's so important to crack down on fighting in the NBA is as simple as the size and brute strength those guys possess. They're not wearing any pads...nor are they throwing hands while balancing on knives...they're 6'7 230 lbs of strength, and sick leverage. It''s dangerous.

Back to the hockey example...one thing that really grates on me is when some dingbat calls an incident like Bertuzzi's shot on Moore, or McSorely/Brashear a fight. It's singularly stupid.
