Semper Fi.

Remember Tarawa, Iwo, Okinowa, Guam...Afganistan..(isn't that land locked) and Iraq.

First in, First out.

Most people don't know that almost everyone who hoisted the flag on Iwo were killed in action later.

I try to talk to lingering WW2 vets but only if they are willing to talk...

One in 5 will speak candidly to me...I never push it out of respect.

I think there was more than one...evidently, we were in areas dangerous for draft (depth) but the captain and Admiral were willing to sacrifice the ship for the men even if it were beached.

He said (basically and I can't make up history but I try sometimes)

"WTF are we waiting for...close in..."

He had his destroyers pummel the Germans at incredibly close range.

People don't know that destroyers won the battle of Omaha.

The old semi-retired vet I had Kitty's manhood stripped by was candid.

He was a medic on Omaha. It's not the Marines I don't think, but it was Amphibious He said it was a killing zone and the bombing missed the targets. So did the big guns.

We said we were being massacred and he didn't know what body to choose to drag...(he was a medic)...total chaos...he said bullets danced at his feet and whizzed past his head but he kept dragging what he thought might live.

He said the hardest thing was leaving a soldier he knew was gone that was pleading when there was another he thought could live. He braved the crossfire again and again to retrieve men. His eyes got a little wet but the old man's voice never cracked.

Then he snipped Beezer's nuts off without blinking an eye while I couldn't even look. Heh...

I need to get into that basement...he's got some good stuff. Heh.

Here's to all the Armed Forces, USO and the Wounded Warrior effort.

Edit...some Admiral pulled a destroyer in within 500 feet and blasted them and we broke thru.

I've talked to a few of those WWII vets. We usually BS a little about my Navy times and their service times. The fun stuff and the goofy stuff. Sometimes the conversation gets around to the rough stuff that they only want to talk about every once in a while. I'll tell you that they went through some really serious ****, **** that will curl your hair and curdle your blood. **** that you probably don't want to hear. If a vet ever talks to you about it nine times out of ten they just need to get it out. I'll always respect that and I'll always respect them.

Yep, being stationed on a Marine controlled base in Iraq, I'm definately enjoying the Marine Corps Birthday. We get better food at the chow hall, various ceremonies, and best of all, beer.

231 years means the date we're talking about was November of 1775, which was right around the beginning of the Revolution.

Can someone tell me what was the significant event that happened on November 10, 1775? Was this the first engagement? If not, what was the first combat for the Marines?

I believe the Continental Congress passed a resolution to create the Marine Corps on this day.

It was the day that the congress passed the resolution to create marines for service on ships. They immediately started coercing drunks at Tun Tavern, PA to enlist for the war, which is a tradition that continues to this day.

I'm not lying...they did it to me.

Just remember that this is what The Corps faced in every assault in the Pacific. Not only that, they faced an enemy that was not indoctrinated with the European "Gentleman's" rules of war. The Japanese were ferocious and fanatical in their combat technics. I've spent time on Okinawa, and was fortunate enough to catch the "milk run" flight down to Iwo (we actually have a Coast Guard station there...weird). I came away from the experience with an entirely different level of respect for what those guys went through. I'm a third generation Leatherneck, my younger Bro' served as well...hell I'm even married to a former Marine! I just wanted to say Happy B-Day to all you formers, and to all you on active duty...well, you are doing an outstanding job upholding the standards that we have come to expect and continue to build on the legacy that is The Corps.

Semper Fi and give 'em Hell,
