Default The Gallows heard round the world: Saddam to be hung

Saddam Hussein's death will be a spectacle of historic proportions. This is going to be the most visible hanging the world has ever seen.

Last time a big shot like that was sentenced to hang ... it was Herman Goering. And he "cheated" the hangman by somehow smuggling a poison pill into his cell ....

Yes, but his execution never was in danger of being broadcast on youtube.

Why, the timing is as much as a coincidence as, well, that last Osama video tape released right before the '04 elections.

In any event, this whole hanging thing couldn't happen to a more deserving piece of human fecal matter.

I've changed my mind recently about killing people to punish them. I use to be for the death penalty in certain cases, I'm not anymore.

I find it hypocritical to claim justice is being served by doing the same thing the criminal was found guilty of doing. And why does man think it's his place to kill (premeditated) another man for any reason?

One thing this will do however is create more fanatical religious hate between the different secs in Iraq which will mean more death for our troops and Iraqis.

I think when it comes to punishment of a person of the status of Saddam and given the magnitude of his crimes that death is too good for him. I would rather see him in a very basic cell that was set up behind Plexiglas so the people of Iraq could walk by and see Saddam in his cell and the people should be allowed to walk by 24 hours a day 7 days a week. He should have to listen to the words of his people the rest of his life. I am sure everyone in Iraq has something to say to Saddam and they should have the chance to say it.

It's a fact, the Sunnis aren't going to take this very well. There will be more violence when they hang him guaranteed.

Shiites cheer, Sunnis protest conviction

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer Sun Nov 5, 7:06 AM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Shiites broke into wild celebration on Sunday after Saddam Hussein was sentenced to hang, but his fellow Sunnis paraded through the former dictator's hometown chanting, "We will avenge you Saddam."

In Sadr City, the Shiite stronghold of northeast Baghdad, youths took to the streets dancing and singing, despite a curfew declared for the capital and two neighboring provinces.

"Execute Saddam," they chanted. Many carried posters bearing the image of Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical anti-American cleric whose Mahdi Army militia effectively runs the district.

Breathing heavily as he ran along the streets, 35-year-old Abu Sinan said, "This is an unprecedented feeling of happiness ... nothing matches it, no festival nor marriage nor birth matches it. The verdict says Saddam must pay the price for murdering tens of thousands of Iraqis."

Saddam and his seven co-defendants were on trial for a wave of revenge killings carried out in the city of Dujail following a 1982 assassination attempt on the former dictator. As the verdict was read on Sunday, people in Dujail celebrated in the streets and burned pictures of their former tormentor.

Saddam was sentenced to death by Iraq's High Tribunal for crimes against humanity, along with his half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court. Three other defendants received lesser sentences and one was acquitted.

Similar celebrations were reported in other Shiite districts of the capital and other cities, although the size of crowds seemed to have been reduced due to the open-ended curfew declared Saturday. Iraqi security forces and U.S. troops mounted additional patrols.

Clashes broke out in north Baghdad's heavily Sunni Azamiyah district where police were battling men with machine guns. At least seven mortar shells slammed to the ground around the Abu Hanifa mosque, the holiest Sunni shrine in the capital.

In Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, 1,000 people defied the curfew and carried pictures of the city's favorite son through the streets.

Some declared the court a product of the U.S. "occupation forces" and decried the verdict.

"By our souls, by our blood we sacrifice for you Saddam" and "Saddam your name shakes America."

Nah, I change my mind. Some of the democrats who believe Hussein being left in charge of Iraq are correct.

I mean, the U.S. should have butted out and let the UN and Europe handle it since they did so well handling Hitler, Japan, the invasion of Kuwait, the killings in Kosovo, homocides in Africa, and WOO, doing such a superb job handling today's muslim terrorists, who are, among many things, currently burning down cities in France. But that's ok, it's all part of a 30 year peace process. If anyone is still alive by then, assuming we all haven't been nuked at some point, it'll be regarded as a great success

He has it coming. Fortunately, they aren't going to shoot him. Way to humane for someone of his track record. Just hope they don't screw around, build it, test it , and hang him high. No serious delay hopefully..dman

He has other trials to go through. Saddam will die of old age or other reasons before he gets executed.

Requiem is right. Saddam will just rot in jail waiting for his trials and other appeals.

BTW, this will have NO impact on the elections unless the Republicans (Bush) decide to MAKE it an issue. As of now, I see no signs of that happening with the election just a day away...

I'm interested in the "humane" difference between shooting someone and hanging them, could you detail that for me?

Hanging, is not necessarily an immediate death if slight flaws exist in the noose to start with. He deserves the worst possible scenario, neck stays in tact, a slow death at the end of a rope....dman
