Hadn't seen this discussed here yet. Abortion is on the ballot in South Dakota. In a nutshell, the SD Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a bill outlawing all abortions in the state of SD unless the pregnant mother's life is in danger. A petition drive was started to refer this law directly to the voters of SD. It will be on the ballot this Tuesday. From all accounts, the voting will be fairly close, although it will probably be shot down. No matter what your personal views on the subject, it should be very interesting to see how it plays out...

Im surprised that the voters got a touch on the issue. These issues have recently been settled by the great lawmakers in the sky.

It is interesting. SD was the first state in the US to allow for Referendums and Initiatives. For the aforementioned "abortion" bill, ban opponents needed to collect just over 17,000 signatures of South Dakotans to refer it to a statewide vote. They easily collected more than twice that in a short period of time. There is no doubt that feelings and emotions run high on both sides. I personally think that this law will be revoked ultimately because the SD Legislature didn't allow for any exceptions, even in cases of rape or incest. I believe most South Dakotans will find that too harsh...
