Nienhuis
Position: Offensive Tackle College: Oregon State Height: 6-5¾ Weight: 307 Hometown: Irvine, Calif. Analysis | Injury Report | Agility | High School | Personal OVERVIEW Nienhuis is a player with prototype size, smooth athletic ability and proven good production as both a pass protector and drive blocker. Nienhuis was a two-year starter at left offensive tackle for Woodbridge High School, where he also lettered in basketball as a center and volleyball as a middle blocker. He was a first team All-Sea View League as a junior and senior and also earned first team all-county by the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times. Nienhuis redshirted as a freshman for Oregon in 2000 and played in nine games as a reserve right tackle in 2001. He went on to start 38 consecutive games after taking over right tackle duties as a sophomore. He earned second-team All-Pac 10 Conference honors as a junior, helping the team average 463 yards per game in total offense. He progressed to first-team All-Pac 10 honors in 2004, as he provided solid pass protection for quarterback Derek Anderson. ANALYSIS Positives Has a very large frame with a thick chest, muscular arms and thick legs … Shows good knee bend and gets off the snap on time, showing the ability to unwind out of his stance … While he plays with a narrow base, he can bend his knees and get good fits … Stays up and on the block, and though not a mauler or even a finisher, he works to stay in the way … Works well on combos, and is alert to games … Sound pass protector who flashes a strong hand punch … Has enough foot speed to get get an edge on the pass rusher … Has above-average athletic ability and good initial quickness to reach or cutoff … Can work from a two-point pass set and shows light feet working down the line … Slides the circle well and takes good angles vs. wide speed … When he stays low and rolls his hips, he can generate movement … Doesn't show a real nasty streak, but in 2004, he displayed enough of temperament to aggressively stay after his blocks … Has a good kick-out and pass set, showing a better hand punch and good extension as he will sit down and not overextend, so he can mirror and block the wide rusher in pass protection. Negatives Not a consistently physical player … Plays too high in his stance and this causes him to play with little explosion or power … Can get high, and get top heavy at times, and is susceptible to up and under moves … Keeps his head out and sees twists quickly, but sometimes looks nonchalant or careless … Has good hand placement, but needs to generate more strength to sustain once locked on … His problems with his hands come when he catches a little too much, allowing the pass rusher to leverage underneath him or get on his edge … When he gets his base narrow, he has trouble redirecting back inside … Oregon State will mostly wall off and position in the run game and Nienhuis does not do a lot of drive blocking or pulling there … Has above-average field awareness, but will make some mental errors (three false starts charted and failed to locate two fumbles in 2004) … One of the reasons he might not be used much on pulls is that he looks a little slow footed in the second level and at times, will get in the ball carrier's way … When he plays too high in his stance, he does not bend his knees properly, but he has decent lateral movement and feet and body control … Does not adjust that well in space. INJURY REPORT No injuries reported. AGILITY Combine -- 5.16 in the 40-yard dash … 2.98 20-yard dash … 1.77 10-yard dash … 4.47 20-yard shuttle … 7.5 three-cone drill … 29½-inch vertical jump … 8-foot-5 broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 22 times … 33 3/8-inch arm length … 10-inch hands … Right-handed. HIGH SCHOOL Attended Woodbridge (Irvine, Calif.) High School … Started two years at left tackle on offense … First-team All-Sea View League as a junior and senior … Also earned first-team all-county by the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times … Earned three letters in basketball at center and one in volleyball as a middle blocker. PERSONAL Photography major … Finalist for the Southern California Scholar Athlete Award … Son of Melvin and Joyce Nienhuis … Born Feb. 16, 1982 in Long Beach, Calif. … Resides in Irvine, Calif. |
