Most people don't realize this, but the NFL enacted rule changes after the 2000 season to prevent the dirty play that Baltimore relied on to run their scheme. Everybody remembers the 700 pounds of DT that lined up in front of Ray Lewis, but most people don't know that Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa were diving at the knees of guards and linemen on almost every play.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/rav2000.htm

its 165 points which is actually 10.32

and the 77 Falcons had 124 in a 14 game season which is a little over 8 per game.

the broncos are 7.3 which is on pace for 117 points in a 16 game season. If they could pull that off i'm sure it would stand for a long time.

Nobody will remember the 1977 Falcons as a great defense, but they did allow only 129 points in the final year of the 14 game schedule.

The 1976 Steelers allowed 138 points and the 1975 Rams allowed 135 points and both of those defenses are much better remembered, and for good reason. The 1977 Falcons were a fluke.

The Falcons rode a weak schedule and Jerry Glanville's Gritz Blitz to their record setting season. Unfortunately their offense only scored 179 points and the team finshed 7-7, three games behind the division winning Rams.

The 1977 season was a complete aberration for the Falcons as their defense allowed 312 points in 1976 and 290 points in 1978.

So how is that any different than what your offensive linemen do?

Once would have been sufficient. It is alos apparent that you need to go read on eof the 300 threads that discusses blocking techniques that relate to what is illigal, what is not, and what techniques we use and don't use.

If you ever have a question about NFL games, seasons, players or teams, you can check out www.pro-football-reference.com. It has all the info you need to make fact-based statements and enter a discussion, and it is all-text and very easy to navigate around from season-to-season.

For instance, when some chiefs fan makes the stupid statment that their team last year was "like one of only 2 10-6 teams not to make the playoffs", you can check www.pro-football-reference.com and browse around, then come back and say:

"Actually, the 2003 Fins were 10-6, as were the 1981 Broncos and 1991 Niners. The 1985 Broncos were actually 11-5 and didn't make the playoffs. So that's 4 teams right there, and there were more in the 1980s. Hell, 10-4 teams missed the playoffs in the 1970s. Check your facts, dumbass."

And you don't have to make some dumb intro like a certain website of Patriots fans does, like "Let's hammer this argument into the ground with the Abrams M1A1 tank of pigskin knowledge, the Cold Hard Football Facts."

This has to be one of the most amusing straw man arguments I have ever seen.

"I think some Chiefs fans may have claimed that they were one of two 10-6 teams not to make the playoffs. Well a year later I'm going to debunk that because there were really three other such teams."

Thanks for your comments. Greatly appreciated, and I am impressed with your quasi-understanding of the term straw man.

The point of the post was pimping pro-football-reference. I added a humorous example based on what someone wrote YESTERDAY on chiefsplanet, in a discussion that 10-6 "assures" the Yellow and Red a playoff spot. It popped into my head when I was writing the post, and since I knew 2 other teams that were in that predicament, I checked it out. For your cultural edification, some other members of the unfortunate 10-6 club are the 1989 Packers and Redskins, the 1988 Saints and Giants, and 1986 Seahawks. So you can see that there are many 10-6 teams with no January.

Another fun stat: the 2002 Chiefs may be one of only 2 teams to score 450+ points and not have a winning record. That other team? The 2004 Chiefs. I found that pretty funny.
