Default The 1.5 step rule

I'm watching the NC State/Florida State game and a DE comes in a half step before release and draws a personal foul.

It used to be three steps. Then they reduced it to 2, then 1.5...however, I have been seeing calls with solid hits just .5 steps before contact.

What else are they going to do to pussify the NFL? You breath on a reciever after 5 yards and are flagged. Yet you can simply mug if you look back to the ball?

This whole "leading with the helmet" rule is absurd as well. There was always a spearing rule, at lest in the modern era. I simply can't imagine how two players might make helmet to helmet contact. In the old days, this was tandard practice, including tearing off helmets and stomping on nutsacks in a pile.

If this trend continues, we will have players flopping like "football" players all around the world. A WR will drop a pass when hit and grap his knee to get the red card.

I'm in favor of protecting players but Jesus Christ, all these rules were in place decades ago. The increasing habit of flagging DE's when they hit the QB .5 steps is absurd, and if they had just enforced existing rules. NE wouldn't of been ablt to MUG recievers up to 10 yards.

I can't remember the exact SB, but the Immortal Teddy Bruchi was hammering recievers a full 8 to 10 yards off the LOS. I remember being in the chat room and we were all astounded at the no calls.

What does the NFL do? Typical knee jerk reaction. Instead of adjusting the bump to 7 yards, now a DB can't breath on a reciever without an illegal contact call.

THERE WAS ALLREADY A RULE IN PLACE. You give a Defense an inch, hey will stretch it as far as they can, as well they should.

I have seen numerous penalties for "leading with the helmet" that have been completely absurd. The guy dodges one way, you do the same and happen to collide. How is that malicious, but it's being called every week.

The problem is that all these rules are overwhelming refs.

Did anyone watch the SuperBowl? I've seen piss poor officiating but noting even close to that travestyl. How can you miss over at least 6 calls with instant replay, and why did every call go against Seattle.

there were at least 5 calls that should of been overtuned not nothing.

I guess they have three blind mice in the replay booth.

Punters already flop on a regular basis, I wouldn't be surprised to see that habit spread

Okay, that was kind of funny. Even Mock would have to admit that was pretty good.

In the rule book there is not a black and white set number of steps. It says "Roughing the passer. Defensive players must make a definite effort to avoid charging into a passer, who has thrown the ball from in or behind the neutral zone, after it is clear the ball has been thrown. No defensive player shall charge into teh passer who is standing still or fading back, because he is considered out of play after the pass." That is Rule 9 Section 4 Article 4 from the NFHS rule book. Also of note from article 3 is " No player or non player shall: a. Swing the foot, shin or knee into an opponenet, nor extend the knee to meet a blocker. b. Charge or throw an opponent to the ground after he is obviously out of the play, or after the ball is clearly dead either in or out of bounds.....g. Make any other contact with an opponent which is deemed unnecessary and which incites roughness." Lots of gray and open for interpretation. As an official I will talk to a player warn them the ball is away and once I say ball's away any contact with the QB is a penalty. Now that is High School. College games I have done is a little more throw the flag at your boundry line and then the players will adjust. But if you look at the rule. Once the ball is out of the hand the defense has to make an effort to avoid the hit.

When did Florida State and NC State join the league?

Anything that keeps me from seeing too many Spergeon Wynn/Craig Whelihan matchups is good rulemaking.

I always loved how Chargers fans would call him "Wheels."

Um, guys, it's probably best not to give a nickname to someone who completely sucks - the exception being names like "f-in' mouth breather," which is what Raiders fans were affectionately calling Kerry Collins last year.

How about you give me half a step to kick your ass, fill a paper bag with Beezlebubs crap and set it on fire over your head? Wouldn't that amuse you even more?

Sorry about that mock. Out of habit I didn't even read your post. I was just bored due to the bye week and decided to kick the local drunk.

I'm sure that Minnesota farmer will want to kick your ass now but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The last time we got together to kick the local drunk, ie Mock, he deleted the thread.

Something about the Dallas/Philly game, and McNair playing in that game for some reason.

The humor potential of this thread is directionly proportional to how much alcohol Mock poured back during the Twins game.

I'm guessing we're talking about a substantial amount since they were put away in 3 straight.

I just wonder if he ever googled "karman line" and found out just how big an ass he can make of himself.

Mock, there are 12 steps for alcoholics in recovery. 12 - 1.5 = 10.5. Figured you had a right to know why everyone, including me, was laughing at you.

broncogary, that was a classic zing and surely should go into the Ring of Fame.
