Reported on Denverbroncos.com that no one is the number one tailback...It all comes down to final preseason game...
http://www.ffmastermind.com/quickbits.php -- Broncos Starting RB Position Wide Open --Tue Aug 29, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com In an update to an earlier report, the Denver Broncos' official website reports Broncos HC Mike Shanahan indicated that he will use undrafted rookie free agent RB Mike Bell extensively during the preseason finale. Nearly all NFL teams play their starters for just a series, if at all, during the preseason finale. So RB Mike Bell's expected workload could be an indication that he is not unchallenged for the starting job. "I'm not going to go through the playing time or the depth chart," Shanahan said. "We'll all find out when we open the season against the Rams who that starting running back will be. But there is some competition there, and hopefully we'll get a chance to evaluate them against Arizona, and obviously we'll all see when we play against the Rams (on Sept. 10) who gets the starting nod." RB Mike Bell was thought to be ahead of RB Tatum Bell, who has played much better in the past two weeks. And now RB Cedric Cobbs, who currently leads the league in preseason rushing yardage, gaining 161 yards and averaging 5.8 yards per rush, could be closing the gap on the Bells. "I would say that I'm not too far away from (them) -- if (not) right tit-for-tat with them," Cobbs said. "But I've got to keep continuing to get better. This game is real important to me, so I'm definitely trying to raise it to another level." Added Shanahan: "Any time a guy averages over 5.5 yards a carry, he's doing a great job. And RB Ron Dayne (turf toe), who was the No. 1 running back going into training camp, practiced on Monday in an attempt to hold onto a roster spot. "For him to practice today was a good sign," Shanahan said. So with 60 minutes of preseason football remaining, the competition to be the team's No. 1 running back at St. Louis remains wide open. "There's nobody excluded there," Shanahan said. Last edited by Gcver2ver3; 08-29-2006 at 09:01 PM.. |

Mike Bell, for his power and sentimental reasons(comon, how awesome would it be for the guy who idolized TD and grew up a Broncos fan to lead us to a SB victory?)

I have a better chance of winning the lotto than Cobbs has of starting for us. Let me ask this one question about Cobbs; ' If he is for real why was he doing nothing against our defense in camp but when you put him in against second and third team defenses (especially the Lions, Titans and Texans) he explodes on the scene. C'mon now let's be real here. Last edited by Jetmeck; 08-29-2006 at 09:12 PM.. |

Better go buy your tickets, because I think he does have a chance to start.
Will he start? Don't know. Depends on the game on Thursday, I should think. But I thought M. Bell did not do as well as he had been doing against the Texans. Conversely, T. Bell did much better, and showed some flashes of what he brings to the table. Overall, though, I thought Cobbs had the table to himself. He has the size of an Anderson but he's quicker at the cut and faster. He is an all-around back compared to Tatum who is a race horse, but like a car in overdrive, has not much power. So, I would say that Cobbs has an excellent chance to be the starter, and T. Bell to be the second as he did last year. M. Bell will get the chance to play on occassion to spell Bell. I am still interested in what Nash can do. They may have the ultimate RBBC: four RBs running at different times in different situations. |

This means Nash is in the hunt too. "Nobody is excluded", said Shanahan.

For all we know...there will be no1 on depth chart. Drive, and play calling will dictate starter...I'm comfortable with that.

I really like Cobbs style when he runs the ball. IMO, he's the best RB for the Broncos system.

Screw sentiment. On Shanahan's team you have to earn it. If he starts, he earned it. Sentiment will have NOTHING to do with it.

Stop with the Cobbs business. I could run against 2nd string defenses in Denver's sytem and look better than TD doing it.
I like his style, but there is a reason he is behind both Bell's on the depth chart. |

Have you watched a single game thsi pre-season
![]() Both Bells have been one cutting and going up field where applicable (sometimes there is zero place to cut back to). Both Bells have had long runs doing EXACTLY that. Cobbs, while fitting the Denver system, is injury prone and has not once (according to our TC guys) ran against a first team defense and been able to get any kind of run. I like the guy, think he is a decent enough back, but he isnt the best back on the roster and the best back will start. |

well if you read the TC reports, it seems as though he IS earning it. Ask Khan, he even said a bunch of times in his TC reports M. Bell was the best. Cobbs and Nash were running against 2nd and 3rd team defenses in the preseason, so i am skeptical about their performances.

M Bell not the starter??...but, but.. he salutes when he scores and everything!
![]() I really don't care as long as the guy selected produces.....evidently, Shanahan isn't comfortable yet....I can wait if he can, no problem. |

The difference between starters and backups is exaggerated in this elite league of professionals. Cobbs has been breaking tackles and dragging NFL defenders along for a 5.8 average. Give him a hole, and he'll take it to the house. He's the most physically talented back on the team. He still has to prove he has the iron will to play the game though. I've questioned his mental toughness over the years.

Cobbs is always hurt you guys say. Well heck, that kind of thinking would have never allowed Priest Holmes to even get on the damn field. Sheesh.
Tatum Bell has the home run game but can't handle a full time load and defiantely not a great runner when it turns cold. There's a reason why the Kentucky Derby is in spring and not winter. Mike Bell is a great story but he has an eractic running style, and he naturally has a high profile. He's gonna be a fumble prone guy if you ask me. Dayne......I don't know about him. He's big. I guess average speed if that. Just no wow factor at all except 2 or 3 runs last year. I don't think his hands are the best either. Cobbs - I just like what he brings to the table. As for him not running well during practices, who knows. Last time I checked, it mattered what you did on game day. He's the ONLY guy who can be an every down back. He's bigger and more powerfull then both Bells and faster then Dayne. I don't care if he was injury prone in his past, he looks healthy now. He may have most of his yards against 2nd units but as well, he's had the 2nd unit line blocking for him and most of the time, BVP was the QB so teams weren't exactly playing the pass you know. As for his mental toughness "over the years" I can't agree I would have the same concern. He played for the Patriots in 2004 who had 2 pretty damn good back in front of him and that was his rookie season. The following year I think he was hurt and didn't have any carries at all. I don't think there is enough criteria to judge him on his mental toughness. This will be his 3rd year. Lets see what he can do. Last edited by ZONA; 08-30-2006 at 12:04 AM.. |
