Tis true...
Patriots give Branch a week to seek a trade

http://www.boston.com/sports/footbal..._seek_a_trade/

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. --The New England Patriots have given holdout wide receiver Deion Branch a week to seek a trade and negotiate a contract with another team, the Patriots announced Friday.

Branch has permission to seek a new team until Sept. 1, next Friday, the team said in a two- sentence statement.
Branch, the 2005 Super Bowl MVP and the team's top receiver, is scheduled to earn $1.045 million this season, the last of his original five-year contract, but he wants a new deal. He has refused to report to the Patriots mandatory preseason mini-camp and its ongoing training camp.
Coach Bill Belichick has declined to discuss the situation, saying he'll only talk about players that are with the team.
Branch led the Patriots with 78 catches and 998 yards receiving last season
The Patriots began training camp without their top two receivers from last year. David Givens signed as a free agent with Tennessee during the offseason.

He won't find anything in that short time period. Pats just continuing to play hardball as usual. Eventually that strategy will backfire. This may be it, but I doubt it.

Why not pay him? How much does he want? PasWin? Crow??

He cant be asking for too much, can he, and if he isnt signed, their WR depth is weak!

I thought the Eagles made a huge mistake by not getting Leile, but Branch would be a better option.

My 2 cents is on opening day he is lining up as a Patriot wide receiver.

Exactly. We did the same thing with Ted Johnson a few years ago when he was unhappy. He lined up a trade with Green Bay and a 3 year contract and the Patriots ending up matching the money Green Bay offered. It allows the player to see what his real value is and not what his agent says it is. With the lack of success of Patton and the underwhelming in Tenn of Givens so far I don't think he is going to get the R Wayne money he thinks he deserves.

I'll find the exact numbers, but the money right now is not even close. Branch wants Reggie Wayne money ($40 million) and he is being offered less than the guy who was his #2 WR last year (Givens).

He will NOT be lining up on week one for the Pats. You can bank on it.

Like Crow said. he will find out his true value shortly and the pats we resign him to a reasonable deal (ie not reggie wayne money).

In May 2006, the Patriots attempted to spark negotiations by offering Branch a contract extension through 2009. The offer had a $4 million signing bonus and $4 million option bonus payable in 2007. His base salary for 2006 would be $1.045 million. In 2007, he would get $1.4 million, $4.3 million in 2008, and $4.75 million in 2009. There were also workout bonuses for an extra $300,000.

Branch's agent, Jason Chayut, rejected the deal because it was heavily backloaded. Another reason is due to inflation, which happens in sports too, his contract would be one of the cheaper ones for upper class receivers. As of August 2006, that contract would put him in the middle of receivers of his rank.

Branch wanted a deal that a player would receive in unrestricted free agency, which is often more because they have to compete with other teams for the player, therefore increasing the amount of money they are willing to invest, and for lower-class teams especially. An example of a deal Branch points to is the six year, $40 million deal that Reggie Wayne got. An example of a lower class team signing a high profile contract is the $24 million, 5 year deal his former teammate David Givens got with the Tennessee Titans.

They better hope that he isn't taking any of this personally....even if they were to match or come close to whatever he is being offered this coming week (just how much cap room does Philly have?), he would still have to want to stay (see Adam V).

He should see if he can get a trade and contract with the Skins. Didn't Snyder give Randle El like an $11 million in bonuses I think that was such a waste of money.

The alternative is he sits out to week 10 and plays for free this year (with fines ect...) We franchise him next year for about 6 million so we get him for those 22 games for 6 million. Last I checked he signed a contract and Luca Brazzi was not in the room.

With the way Washington and Indy are going, that tag could cost them $7 or $8 mil next year.

If he can work out a trade in the next week, he won't need Luca.

Actually, I can see it going the other way. Receiver hungry teams will probably be willing to offer him (close to) the salary he desires, but not be willing to also pony up the draft compensation the pats will demand (something in the late 2nd round early 3rd round range), thus confirming his belief that he is worth more money and fueling his desire to enter free agency... or maybe its just that my jackass buddy is a pats fan and I wish him ill. Probably a bit of both.

If I was Philly I would jump all over this, and offer NE a 3rd and 4th for him. He is a great WR.
