We're teaching Iraq about democracy. In the early going lots of ethnic cleansing is required.

There's a good article about the old man in the new issue of Rolling Stone. Slaughterhouse-Five is still one of my favorite books.

The only way they get away with it, is because they aren't a news site.

It's sad that their parody's are right though - and not for humor's sake either.

Yep.

It's a sad state of affairs that the "fourth estate" has come to this.

I grew up on a steady diet of Vonnegut. I recommend it.

A really wonderful, satirical American writer. Go to Amazon and check out his books. I recommend Cats Cradle, Slaughterhouse 5 and Breakfast of Champions to get started.

Watch the movie version of Mother Night with Nick Nolte. Actually a decent adaptation of the book. Still not as good though.

My favorite Vonnegut novels are Mother Night, Cat's Cradle, Sirens of Titan. I've read about a dozen, but the old man's probably written 20+ books so I've still got a few to go.

I watch the Colbert report every once in a while. His Bush "roast" was absolutely classic.

Re: Vonnegut. I've only read Hocus Pocus. Where would the Vonnegut fans rate that book compared to Slaughterhouse 5...or whatever your favorite Vonnegut effort is?

Just read somewhere that Vonnegut has a new, about-to-be published non-fiction book called "Man Without a Country."

To be honest I think both Hocus Pocus and Slaughterhouse 5 rank poorly amongst his novels. Slaughterhouse gets so much publicity because of its link to real events(The firebombing of Dresden, WWII).

If I were to recommend only 1 book for the casual reader I would suggest Cat's Cradle followed closely by Mother Night. Both are fantastic. However the sytle is still going to be similar to Hocus Pocus so if you didn't enjoy the book at all or his style of satire you might not like these books as much as I did.

Hocus Pocus is not one of my favorites. I will have to respectfully disagree with kappys and recommend starting with Slaughterhouse-Five. It's one of those rare books that is both tragic and completely hilarious. Cat's Cradle and Mother Night are also good options, as is Breakfast of Champions. Jailbird and Bluebeard also rate high, IMO.

I believe that was released in late 2005, LABF. It's basically just random thoughts and anecdotes. It isn't an essential read, but worthwhile nonetheless. There are some really funny passages, as you'd expect.

Yeah, I think Slaughterhouse 5 is rated up there with Huckleberry Finn in popular American Lit. As Twain put it when someone said he didn't write fiction for "elevated minds" or something, "I aim higher." Really grand themes about individuals in relation to the cosmic forces of the universe (God) but written with wit and easily accessible. I mean Updike and Faulkner are just some mind numbingly bleak. Personally I'd rate those 2 along with The World According to Garp as my fav three.

Good call on Garp. I'd put Catcher in the Rye and Catch-22 in that mix as well.

Interesting. Heller and Vonnegut were good buds. Catch-22, yeah. Catcher in the Rye is tough for me, as when I read it in HS I hadn't learned that being a fool is what we all do everday, so I was basically a mean little **** with no sense of humor. Reading it in my 30s, I liked it and even more in my 40s.

Some Kurt Vonnegut quotes:

True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.

The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal.

If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind.

I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.

Human beings will be happier - not when they cure cancer or get to Mars or eliminate racial prejudice or flush Lake Erie but when they find ways to inhabit primitive communities again. That's my utopia.

Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.

Be careful what you pretend to be because you are what you pretend to be.

There is a tragic flaw in our precious Constitution, and I don’t know what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nut cases want to be president.

One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.

I believe that quote comes from Mother Night. Words to live by.
