Default Shanahan, Lynch, Poppa Rod speak

DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN

On how G Dwayne Carswell has played during training camp
“He is competing very hard. You would have to ask him how he feels, but he is like everyone else going through two-a-days, going through camp. It is tough on the body, but he hasn’t missed a practice and is practicing pretty good.”

On Carswell’s contribution to the team
“There is no question about House (Carswell). He has been a warrior. He doesn’t miss, he plays the game extremely hard and he has been in the league for a long time. You do appreciate those types of players.”

On how P/K Paul Ernster performed in Detroit on Friday
“I thought he did a pretty good job, both in kickoffs and punts. Like we said, it is going to be a three-game evaluation, but he did a pretty good job in the first game. It is kind of a shame—I don’t believe that I have ever seen that (football fall of the tee) before, right before he is going to kick it, especially in a dome. I have watched outside, where the ball comes off the tee. It happened to me once golfing. I thought that I had a pretty good excuse, so I thought he had a pretty good excuse when he kind of hit that thing down the field and it looked like a squib kick.”

On DE Kenard Lang’s transition back to the defensive line after playing linebacker last year
“Good. He has always been a defensive lineman. It was really a tough transition on him last year, losing that weight and going to an outside linebacker. I think playing where he is playing is pretty natural for him, and he has been doing a good job.”

On the status of T Adam Meadows
“I am thinking that he is going to practice this afternoon. We are going to forget about him going full speed and just get him back in the swing of things, but I would count him out this week. Hopefully he will get some playing time against Houston (Aug. 27).”

DENVER BRONCOS SAFETY JOHN LYNCH

On improving during the preseason
“We are going to get there. The standards are too high on the defensive side of the ball. Teams with leaderships do well, and we have a lot of good guys, a lot of leaders, and a lot of guys that can play football. Now we just have to get it done and you get it done by coming out here to training camp every day.”

On his evaluation of the starting defense Friday night in Detroit
“You have to get off the field. We had opportunities on third down, and that is something we really emphasize and need to get done. As we increase here in games two and three, we will get more play. The key is to be ready for the regular season, and that is what we are working towards.”

On Al Wilson giving the team a C grade for their first preseason game
“I think that is about right.”

On the how the defense looks thus far
“I think we have a good training camp. You just have to be able to translate it to the field. One thing we improved on was our red-zone defense. We were a lot better in Detroit with that. You have to keep working on the things that we set out to improve on and keep everything else that we were good at last year either the same or better.”

On what the defense is good at
“We are good at a lot of things. If you look all over the field, you will see players that can play at a high level. I think as long as we stick to our standard, there is no reason that we shouldn’t be one of the best defenses in the league.”

DENVER BRONCOS WIDE RECEIVER ROD SMITH

On getting back to practice after missing time with a hamstring injury
“It’s about feel, timing. It’s about getting back slowly and getting back into the flow. I am still coming along. I am not 100 percent, but the thing is just getting back out there and getting into the mix with the guys and just being a part of it. If nothing else, just from a leadership standpoint, getting out there and talking to the young guys and make sure that they do things right.”

On lining up with WR Javon Walker on Saturday vs. Tennessee
“It is going to be fun. The thing is that we are used to progressing as a team and pulling a lot of things together and correct some mistakes that we made last week. It will be a good test for he and I to see how he is gelling and try to get on pace with the quarterbacks.”

On his impression of rookie QB Jay Cutler
“He did well. I am not going to blow it out of proportion like you guys do. I am sure you all think he is John Elway or something. John Elway didn’t start off great. He has some rough times, and Jay is going to have some rough times. From the snaps he took and the decisions he made, he did a great job and that is what you look at, how a guy performs in a different atmosphere. Different pressure form in different atmospheres not going against our guys, and he stepped up and played well. He is going to get better and that is what you want, but he is also going to have some rough times just like the rest of us. But for the most part, he did a good job.”

On the play of WR David Kircus at Detroit
“He did well. He made a few mistakes, but we all do. The thing is you can’t coach effort and the guy is putting a lot of effort into it. We try to coach him up on all of the small things and make sure that he is doing all of those small things. Everybody worries about the big plays down field, but there are a ton of other things such as running game, position on the field and making sure our guys are all in the right spot. Those things are very important on this team, so you have to stress a lot of the small things to our guys. David is doing a good job and he is working hard, and you can’t take that away from him.”

Sounds like?! Rod IS every bit as much a coach but without the title. I swear that everytime I read an article where he is quoted I find myself just shaking my head in amazement at the level Rod has reached in his understanding of the game and the standards he lives by. My hero!

Which makes it all the more amazing that Lelie doesn't see why he isn't #1.

Seriously, to think a guy would not see the impact that having Cutler throw him the ball a year from now will have on his production is astounding. He is a man truly blinded by his own self-worth.

I've never felt so personally b****-slapped by a professional athlete before in my entire life.

I really liked Rod's thoughts on Jay. I've still refrained from jumping on the bandwagon. Not that I don't think he's an excellent QB. Yeah, he's got all of the right moves...but, really, we need to see the consistancy over the long haul!

Doesn't sound much like T.O. does it. The guy played on not one but two ankle stress fractures a few years ago and it was all kept secret other than a "sprain" if I remember right.

Yeah, me too. Screw Rod for trying to temper my homerism for his holiness, Jay Cutler

Who ever said that he was TO-like? Maybe the only comparison is that they both played on fractured lower extremities...other than that they are nothing alike...

And that's exactly why I said I'm excited for the future. Time will tell, but from the start of this saga... I'm excited for future years with Cutler at the helm!

I feel the same exact way. It's great to hear what Cutler has been doing in camp and what we saw Fri. night, but I am not ready to call him the savior of the team or anything or even say there is a QB controversy. Let him get his reps in camp and preseason games and then sit the bench for a year and learn. Watching him throw did get me excited for the future though of what we could possibly have in our next QB.
