Cutler, obviously. Better supporting cast, better defense, better coach.

Cutler, but that has a lot to do with the times. And of course Shanahan is way more capable of dumbing down an offense for plummer...err...a rookie than Reeves.

I'll bite on this one and say Shanny and Cutler. John would've owned every record but for Reeves. Of course, he may not have been the legendary comeback king, either. Hard to say.
Most talent + good coach 70% potential Top talent + good coach 70% potential Most talent + better coach 100% potential Top talent + better coach 80% potential (non scientific, mind you) |

Sorry you all - this is a trick question. The answer of course is John Elway. Because Shanny won't start his rookie QB (unless his hand is forced by injury) where as Reeves could not resist pulling Deberg for Elway.
So... While Jay "the kid" has a better chance to succeed w/ Shanny as his coach then Elway with Reeves, it's because he has Shanny as his coach (and thus he's not playing) that means Elway had the better potential to win more games as a rookie. |

the question could be misconstrued insofar as the wording of "game winning potential". Elway had more game winning potential than any quarterback in the history of the game. Hell, Reeves is thought of as a good coach because elway carried his ass on his back. If you are comparing teams, than Cutler would have a more talented team, but if you are talking pure "game winning" potential....

Cutler, but not because of his talent but rather because he has a better coach and a better team.

John Elway didn't come to a team that had just gone to the AFC Championship game, and the receivers are better now than they were then. Reeves didn't know how to use Elway and Shanahan did.
I will say that it will be near impossible for Jay to be as good a player as Elway. Elway was so good that opposing teams never felt safe in the fourth quarter even if they had a two score lead. I mean, it was like you couldn't stop him. He was such a tremendous athlete too. |
