Default The Ding Dong offense...

So apparently we're going to see more of the runningback by committee approach this year. While Mike Bell shows some promise, he also looks really green out there. I realize it's just one game so far, but my first impression is that Ma Bell needs a lot of work still before he's ready for a work load. The fumble was bad, but I don't want to get too down on a young runner in his first pro game ever. I remember Portis put a few on the ground in the preseason when he was a rookie, but he rarely fumbled once he got settled in. I'm not so worried about that at this point. I'm just not so sure that we saw a guy who's ready to take on an NFL workload.

Tatum looked pretty good on a couple of runs. I especially liked the screen that Cutler dumped off to him for a nice chunk of yards. I hope we see more of that. I don't know what I think about Tatum as the tailback in the offset I formation, though. He seems to have his best luck when the other team doesn't know he's coming. Offset I is like putting a target on your tailback's chest and having the announcer tell the stadium that the ball is about to be run. I don't know that I'm convinced that he's ready to be an every down back either though...

First, when we only run the ball 18 times throught the majority of the first three quarters, any kind of run-evaluation goes caca. Second, our second string offensive line really had an off night and did not allow our runners to see much daylight.

Positives and negatives I saw from each back
  • Bell ran tentative on cutbacks all night and did have a tendency to hit the wall and immediately hit the turf. But, he also had a couple decent runs in a very limited action
  • Dayne is still a solid short yardage back. Although his longest carry was only 4 yards, he did still have some good burst
  • Tatum, ripping off the longest run by any back, still seems to be unfavored to really break through. He also seemed to lose some burst when hitting the line.
  • Cobbs looked good against a third and fourth string d that was playing soft and looking for the pass. Nothing against him, but lets see how he does next week before throwing him into the starting mix.

All in all, a slow week for our run game. I expect next week to be similar in that we wont see a breakaway runner emerge due to limited action.

Tatum is the best RB on this squad. Period. Practice is practice. Games are games.

I wouldn't put too much weight on MBell's fumble. Portis fumbled every third carry during his rookie pre-season, and it didn't carry over into the regular season. MBell is going to get a longer look next week, and we can get a better read on him then.

The competition is still wide open, but I expect MBell to be the starter when we get down to the real thing. He needs to calm down a little, but I think it's completely understandable that he was shaky in his first NFL action ever. Particularly with the weight of having been named the starter only a few days ago.

We're going to see a lot more of MBell in teh pre-season, and we'll have a much more definitive answer when the preseason is over than we do right now.

MB kinda got blindsided while spinning. Reminded me of Fred Taylor who would fight till he got stripped. MB's fumble was more about not knowing when to just fall forward than letting himself get laid out.

I think I said it 10 times by now. The Mike Bell talk was spinning out of control during camp. He definetly looked great out there but he hadn't even carried the ball 1 yard in an NFL game. He coughed it up. No big deal. Hell the kid was so pumped up he could barely do an interview after the game.

Mike will settle down.

Ah now my boy Kircus on the other hand.....Meck told you so.

When Kircus get's laid out after making an amazing grab in the endzone like Ed use to do.....You are going to hear a steady chant of "Kircus! Kircus! Kirkcus! coming from the south stands waiting for him to either be carted off the field or rising from the dead like floppy Ed use to do.

I did like Bell's running out there but he was kind of reckless which in no doubt led to the fumble. As you said, he will calm down and concentrate on holding the ball better as well. But i love how he was attacking those holes out there. Very aggressive runner and i like that.

I agree totally. I thought he hit the holes hard and showed a nice burst. If he fumbles carelessly next week, I will worry. Until then, keep giving him the rock.

We realy didn't run the ball that much untill the fouth. I was realy wanting to see what Mike can do, but he wasn't out there that long. He looked alright untill that fumble. Not good, but not bad. I thought tatum looked good. He was finially showing some patience out there IMO, and that made me feel good. so good job by tatum. and cobbs looked good too.

I wouldn't say this game was any indication of what the Broncos will do during the regular season. The O hasn't changed much over the years. Like all preseason games, it was vanilla. No shock there.

To read posts here one would think M Bell peed on the Wailing Wall. Cripes it was a rookie jitters fumble don't make it more than it was.

Too hard to really judge the running game at this point. I saw some really good things from both runners. MB plays a lot faster than I imagined. It seemed that as soon as he got the handoff he was already through the hole. Plays a lot faster that his 40 time would lead us to believe. Tatum had some nice runs. The draw play at the end of the half. One in the 3rd where he shed a couple tackles for a nice game. Arguments can be made for each to be the starter for this team. Running game is the least of my worries. D-line...that's another story.

WTF M Bell had the starters making multiple holes for him and Tatum had to squeeze out three yards out of a cloud of dust I also noticed he has blocking better and caught the best catch by a RB yesterday if Mike Bell starts again Shanahan is using the UDFA to keep his investments safe, that is just fro mwhat I noticed about Tatum, he deserves a little praise all you hater's really think Mike Bell is better in all aspects of the game are rediculass, he fumbled he missed his block and he got tripped up at the line without gaining anything.

Mike Bell was averaging 5 yards a carry before the fumble and I then I think he was a shaken up a bit. Let's see how he responds to this first bout of adversity.

It's tough to judge the rbs so far. Mike Bell was running good at first until he fumbled but he only got 7 carries and Tatum only got 5 carries. I would wait until we see theses guys get more of a rhythm going and not base them off of what we saw last night.

It's only the first preseason game and I think once the first team plays for more than one series and in the reg. season Rod and Javon will open up the offense and help out the running game as well.

I agree, he looked excitably tense, which is better than a nervous wreck. He was playing in his first NFL game for his favorite team. His dream became a reality, he probably couldn't sleep a wink last night.

Kircus already looked like he is in mid-season form. Marshall looked pretty good, as well. LELIE WHO
