Default Chiefs struggle versus Vikings in scrimmage

On Chiefsplanet the board is flipping out because their defense still looked like crap despite all the additions they made....apparently Law & Surtain got beat often by viking WR's...

Here's the post...and below it is the link to the thread if you want to read more meltdowns....

The answer from watching all 3 units play is I hope we can figure a way to get a big pass rush.

The CBs were beaten like a red haired step child. It was ugly. In one on one the Vikes caught the first 20 or so passes without any Chief making a play. Later on a couple of players (Sapp and Perkins) made some plays on balls and forced a couple of incompletions. Also the CBs amassed more laundry than a Chinese family with pass interference penalties on virtually 90% of the early plays and a good 50% later on.

No pressure from the DL without a blitz. Dalton was running with the second team and at times the 3rd string. Sims spent most of the night on the second team and didn't make a play that I saw. Hali was doing his high motor bit but was completely ineffective and easily handled by the RT of the Vikes. There was a sack on a blitz but they were never close any other time.

LBs. Actually a strength that appeared to react fairly well and made more plays than the rest of the team combined. Kawika tiped a pass and had good coverage on a couple of pass plays. Key Fox made a couple of really good sticks and was quite active. I think he will beat out Bell for the other LB spot.

Run defense. Same as last year, overall effective and then a 80 TD run right past everyone. The Vikes ran 2 bootlegs and picked up about 20 yards each time.

Pass defense in 11 on 11 was just frightening. I have pics I'll post when I get back but 50% of the time the coverage was so bad that at least one reciever was open by 10 yards or more almost every play. Ty Law tweaked a hip when he was faked out of his jock and didn't play again after limping off the field. Sapp was by far the best CB that played and made a couple of plays. The Vikes completed passes at will and would have scored on every possession.

Sorry I don't have better news. I know its early and we have to get a system in place but it was really embarrasing to watch.

I'll try think of more items of interest to post later...

Meh, this is why they play these scrimmages and have preseason games. Teams are still learning and working out the kinks.

That part is interesting because we've been hearing that Bell is having a good camp.

The Vikings suck too.

The roster is a joke.

Gotta love running the bootleg against KC. How long until a Chief fan chimes into this thread?

Well, lets not get to excited. Just like Bob is a boob for declaring his untested Chefs have a Defense (again), we would be foolish to expect the whole Chefs season to go down the tubes after a bad scrimmage. We can, however, hope this is the trend to come.

I do have to laugh thou. What will they do in KC if their defense actually regresses this year... HA HA HA HA HA.

No, but I'm not going to base my opinion of them on one scrimmage either.

The Viking will win maybe 7 games in a weak division. They have been stumbling around like Homer on Frog Warts all year...

who is?

but i'd rather see them struggle and wonder than dominate and beat their chest...

one thing that they should be at least a little concerned about is their corners getting beaten so badly...

Law & Surtain are expected to play well.....even in a scrimmage

It's way too early to say anything about anyone. You gotta see how these guys perform towards the end of camp and preseason. Same goes for us too.

That's a terrible division that only Chicago will dominate, weakly.

Of course there are things for them to be concerned about, but as I said, that's why they play these scrimmages and preseason games.

I'm glad they struggled, I hope they struggle the entire season. I'm just not going to go into the "Chefs _efense are teh sux" routine over one scrimmage, even if it was against the Vikings.

Just my view of things, feel free to disagree.

It got talent. Mckenzie, Hutchinson, Birk are really good players. I wonder if it was Brad Johnson running those bootlegs

They added Steve Hutchinson in the offseason. Whenever you can add the best player in the league at a given position, it's going to help matters. They also got Bierk back after he missed most of last season. I imagine that'll do them some good too.

I will say this, it certainly paints a much different picture than the camp report that Bob posted here the other day.

what i'm relaying is that i don't disagree with you....i agree

i just wanted to post the chiefs meltdowns and unhappiness about their first scrimmage.......

i like to see that they're off to a slow start....

hopefully it'll stay that way...

The camp report he posted is from an uber-homer writer who none of the CP posters respect. The Chiefs were the team who could most easily acquire Champ according to this guy a few years ago. All it was going to take was their late 1st and LJ after his rookie year when he hadn't done squat.

That explains why Bob chose his camp report to go on. Birds of a feather and all.

I wish I could get more excited about their D performing so badly, but the Vikes do have a good O line. Most players are tired and are getting sloppy at this point in the pre-season so their performance takes a hit.......vets like Law, will take a lot of plays off.

Viking sites are reporting that the team looked good against KC, but each site has conflicting info. One sight claims Chester Taylor looked good, while another said he was held out due to calf strain. Call it what is was a bad practice for the Qweefs, not going to read too much into it.
