A really good Q&A with Mike Mayock
Q. You're rating of Cutler as the No. 1 QB has drawn some controversy. What is it about him that you rate him or what did you see at the Combine or Senior Bowl to back your rating? MIKE MAYOCK: I got a phone call back in September from a guy who is a good friend of mine, a high ranking scout in the NFL, and he said, "You'd better throw some Vanderbilt tape on." This is back in September. He said, "Tell me if I'm seeing this right or if I'm off base but I think this kid would be special." I threw on a couple of September tapes and acouple of his junior tapes and I fell over. I couldn't believe the arm strength, the release, the toughness. What really stood out to me and this is all the way back in September now, the fact that he stood in there, got smacked in the face and consistently delivered the football. My perception on this kid is biggest arm in the draft, quickest release in the draft, he's a three-time captain, he's a smart kid, he's a tough kid. Does he have some technical issues that he's got to clean up? Absolutely. But I have watched every one of his game tapes. Senior Bowl to me reinforced the arm strength and the difference between him and everybody else. And he's more athletic than people think. So I don't take anything away from Leinart or Vince Young, who are very special in different ways. But I think four years from now, you're going to look back and see that this kid is the best of the three. Q. Did you say that you rate Jay Cutler as the guy going to be the best pro of thequarterbacks in draft? MIKE MAYOCK: Yeah, I've been on the record since September saying that he's the best quarterback ultimately out of this draft class. Every tape I've watched -- I've watched too much tape of these three quarterbacks, and nothing's changed my opinion throughout the whole Senior Bowl, Combine, Pro Day. I'll tell you how bad it is, guys. I was watching Pro Day workout tape this morning, and just to see if I'm missing anything. The bottom line to me is Cutler, he's going to be the best pro.Vince Young I have reservations on, not because he's a great athlete and a great kid, and I could care less about the wuderlick. But I do have a concern about whether or not he'll ever get to the next level as a sophisticated NFL quarterback. And in 40 Super Bowls, there's never been a scrambling quarterback that's won a Super Bowl. Matt Leinart, I have a ton of respect for, given the fact that he understands when andwhere to throw the football. As a former defensive back, those guys always scared me. He's gotaverage arm strength, great leadership, greattouch and accuracy. But for a Top-10 pick, I want my Top-10 quarterback to have a better arm than Leinart. So in kind of a quick snapshot, that's my overview of the three quarterbacks. Q. So back to Vince. I still have issues trying to understand how Cutler is going to outdo Vince in coming a quarterback because it reminded me of some of the argument with some of the quarterbacks, got so much hype and never pan out. Can you give me something with a little more meat on why Vince isn't going to pan out compared to Cutler? MIKE MAYOCK: Sure, I'd be happy to. I've watched every coach's tape of all three. I'm trying to project it for you into the NFL. I don't have any other tape that I can watch other than their college tape. I watched Vince Young, what I see is a very simplified offense, that right option offense. He's got one, maybe two reads; if it's not there, he tucks the ball and he goes. Now, when that internal clock of his goes off and he's in the pocket, whether that pocket has broken down or not, he's out the gate. And I can put some Ohio State tape on for you and I can show you where the pocket is perfect, but he will not look for a secondary or third receiver, because that clock has gone off in his head and he says, it's time to get out of here. When a defense forces him to pull the ball down and not scramble for big yardage, his efficiency goes way down. So in my opinion and this is really the crux of it, if you've got a Top-5 quarterback, or just Top-5 pick in the Draft at any position, if you miss with that pick, you set your franchise back three or four years, given the salary cap structure. It's even more so at the quarterback position. So you can't afford to miss. When I look at Vince Young if I'm a general manager, I'm not telling you that I don't think -- he probably will go 3 to Tennessee. But my point is if I'm the general manager, I'm not pushing all my chips out to the middle of the table and betting my franchise on this kid turning into an advanced throwing quarterback in the NFL. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion. |

Mayock slobbered over Cutler for months before the draft. His non-stop verbal Cutler fellatio got pretty annoying.

It's true. I like Mayock and I respect his opinions, but he went on and on and on about Cutler so much that I wondered if he was lobbying to be the kid's agent.
Kind of like another guy (don't remember his name) on NFL Network who apparently didn't watch anything but USC games, since the only players he wanted to talk about were USC players. |

nice read. good points on young and leinart. same thing that we have all preached. cutler has more arm strength than leinart, played in a better system than vy. he has the "pro tools" that the others dont

Mayock did go overboard with his hyping of Cutler, though. As soon as the time comes for him to take the reigns, I'll mark out just as much as anyone. Hell, I'll do it next Friday if he looks good in his preseason debut (though I promise I won't be one of the "Start Jay now!" group). I badly want this kid to succeed. I'm spoiled like that thanks to Elway holding down the QB position from my childhood to my early 20's. I want him to be everything Mayock said he is. I just hope he's prepared for all that comes with being the QB of he Broncos. |

I agree with him; but I can't say he was right for another 5 years. There's a line between being a Fan and being a Homer. I like to think that I walk that line every day of my life... ![]() |

The thing to factor in with Cutler is that anyone who watched a considerable amonut of tape on him at Vandy couldnt help but come away with a similar positive opinion of Cutler's talent.
And look at what he was working with! Having to run for his life every snap, mediocre no-name WR and TE and a lousy O-line and average college RBs, all the while playing some of the toughest schools in college football! I mean compared to Leinert and Young who had ALL world talent at every position surrounding them, its night and day! But now the tables are turned and Young and Leinert are on rebuilding teams while Cutler gets born again on a true Super Bowl contender. Now Cutler's incredible talent is surrounded by top flight talent all around and he's getting infinitely better coaching now across the board from the O-line coaches to QB coach and head coach which is going to have a huge impact long term. And he also has the luxury of not needing to come out right away and save a flounderring franchise as most QBs of his talent are forced to do. My fondest hope is that he only sees mop up duty this season when we have 3 TD leads in the 4th, but if, heaven forbid, Plummer should get hurt after the mid-way point, I suspect Cutler could step in and come pretty close to replicating what Big Ben did in his first season, and perhaps even better, with our team surrounding him. I work at Vanderbilt and have watched Jay for four years. Jay is special. I was a QB in college and know the position. I have watched tape on Young, Lienart, and Cutler. Jay is the best of the three. Vince Young is still having trouble taking the snap in camp. Matt is still playing with Paris. Jay is working hard and learning the system. Jay with some talent around him will be really good. He put Vanderbilt in games where they did not even belong. Example Florida game. Vanderbilt has not won that game since 1948! Jay took them into double OT. Vanderbilt should have won that game because Chris Leak's knee was down before he scored. |

-Average arm strength -Poor mobility -Extremely intelligent -Needs an extremely talented team around him to be good -Seems to be a pretty selfish, immature turd if you ask me -Played on an all-star team in college Look, Leinart played on an all-star team at USC. Think about it: he had a backfield with a #2 overall pick (Reggie Freakin' Bush) and a high 2nd rounder that probably should have been a 1st rounder (Lendale motherFreakin' White), an o-line that is better than some NFL o-lines, Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Dominique Byrd, the list goes on. Cutler, for the most part, played with a bunch of scrubs. I can't name one kid on his offense that was drafted, yet Cutler won Offensive Player of the Year in the SEC!!! Vandy is the equivalent of a WAC team in terms of talent level, yet this kid wins that award. How impressive is that? This kind of reminds me of the old "if Elway was QB of the 49ers" argument. In other words, Leinart would have been a nobody at Vandy, yet Cutler was a star there. If Cutler was the QB at USC, I don't want to even think about how dominant their offense would have been. They were completely dominant with rag armed Leinart in there. |

It's no wonder I expect a SB appearance every year. 1 out of every 3-4 years during his career we went to a SB. If Jay can get to 1 out of 5, I'll be very happy. Hopefully one SB as a backup! ![]() |
