Mel Gibson arrested on suspicion of DUI

Friday, July 28, 2006; Posted: 10:35 p.m. EDT (02:35 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor and director Mel Gibson was arrested Friday in Malibu, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.

Gibson, 50, was pulled over early Friday while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. Officers on patrol reported Gibson was driving at an "excessively fast speed," he said.

Police said his blood-alcohol content was .12. The legal limit is .08.

Gibson was taken into custody and posted $5,000 bond for his release, Whitmore said.

Gibson was not immediately available for comment.

Gibson, who acted in the "Lethal Weapon" and "Mad Max" movie series, won an Oscar for directing 1995's Oscar-winning best picture "Braveheart."

He reportedly financed the controversial movie "The Passion of the Christ" (2004), which he also directed, with $25 million of his own money. The film made $370 million at the domestic box office and ranks No. 10 on the all-time box office list. "Passion of the Christ" was nominated for three Academy Awards.

Gibson's latest movie, "Apocalypto," set in the Mayan civilization of several centuries ago, is due in December.

CNN's Albert Lewitinn contributed to this report.

"There are as many ways to God through wine as there are through prayer."

"In vino, veritas."

Vodka and passionfruit juice is what I heard, but it may have been a radio wag playing off the "Passion" in the fruit.

Not a smart marketing move, but it doesn't get you fired.

Drunken driving lands Mel Gibson in jail
Posted on : Sat, 29 Jul 2006 14:34:00 GMT | Author : Paula Cussons
News Category : Entertainment

Hollywood actor-director Mel Gibson was arrested at about 3 am Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California.
The 50-year-old director of Passion of the Christ was driving at a speed of 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. On being tested for alcohol, Gibson's blood alcohol level was found to be 0.12, way above the legal limit of 0.08, Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Moore said. The actor was driving a 2006 Lexus Coupe.

“The deputy smelled alcohol on his breath. We arrested Mr Gibson on suspicion of driving under the influence, and we took him into the station without incident and we released him and gave him a citation. We will now prepare the case,” said Steve Whitmore, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Gibson was booked at the Lost Hills Station at about 4 am.

While being arrested and tested, Gibson is reported to have used abusive language with Los Angeles County Deputy James Mee. He asked the deputy if he was Jew and then in profanity-laced words said, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” He also threatened the deputy with revenge. “Gibson almost continually threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me,” a report prepared by Mee said.

On reaching the station, Gibson also passed a sexual remark at a female sergeant. “What do you think you're looking at, sugar t*ts?” he reportedly told her, a celebrity Web site that has published the report, said.

However, the sheriff's department decided to keep the report confidential and made Mee write another one minus the religious remarks to prevent the 'inflammatory' incident from sparking off 'Jewish hatred'. The department refused comment on the report, while Gibson's publicist Alan Neirob, through his assistant, said, “At this time we don't have any information on this matter but are checking into it.”

Earlier, Gibson had admitted his addiction to alcohol was a 'flaw' and that he was the kind of person who gets easily addicted to things. “I would get addicted to anything, anything at all. Doesn't matter what it is — drugs, booze, anything. ... I'm just one of these guys who is like that. That's my flaw,” he had said.

The actor was released on bail of US$5,000 and is due to appear in court. The date of the court appearance has not been set.

"Hey, this car doesn't have 26 air bags for nuthin'"

I'm always amazed how people that have had one too many to be over the limit want to speed!

I swear, that Bengal that drove up to a toll booth with a gun on the dash is literally astounding. This day and age, if you don't lay low, you lay in a cell.
