Default WTF!?!? House votes on myspace

http://news.com.com/2100-1028_3-6099...9414&subj=news

Essentially they are banning MySpace and other social networking sites and chat rooms (ostensibly OrangeMane included due to its profiles) from all government terminals (libraries/schools/etc..)

What a farce... all to protect the children. Not only does this hurt our kids (restricting freedom and access to information never helped ANYONE), but it clearly demonstrates the folly of putting any resources in government hands. What about the poorer kids whose only internet access comes from these terminals? A vibrant and important part of global culture will no longer be accessible to them. Our politicians, predictably, are to stupid to see that these sitse are more than child predators... they are an amazing chance for people all over the world to interact with each other in ways never before possible.

This would be much like banning kids from crossing any public roads... sure, they'd be a bit safer... but they'd grow up without any appreciation for anything but their own street.

Just dumb.

More election year BS. Doesn't help that news runs story about the danger of the Internet every other day. and FCC doesn't have the ability to enforce this stuff. I am sure that ACL will sue if it in enacted

It's not that hard.

There are only like 13 choke points coming in and out of the USA for internet

The bill does not ban these sites in total, only from public (government funded) terminals... so the solution would be some kind of firewall on those terminals.

Building a 'great firewall' to block those sites completely is VERY difficult, as you not only have to deal with firewalling the sites themselves.. but also proxies people can use to pull the data through. China has put tremendous effort into it.. and those wanting to get around it never have much trouble.

It's not THAT difficult.

All internet access in the US runs through X check points. You control those checkpoints you control all requests coming in/out.

I mean i lock down a WAN that is global to keep people from getting to sites -

now are there ways to get around things? yes - BUT, i can make it EXTREMLY difficult for someone to get somewhere - not to mention i can see what they are doing...
