More about Lelie and Cutler reporting for Thurs afternoon.
http://www.9news.com/acm_news.aspx?O...a-f131478a1f55 DENVER (AP) -- Broncos coach Mike Shanahan says Ashley Lelie isn't in the doghouse -- yet. But he could quickly find himself feeling Shanahan's wrath if he goes through with his threat to boycott the Denver Broncos training camp as a way of forcing a trade. The Broncos were due to report Thursday afternoon, and Lelie will be subject to $14,000 in daily fines if the receiver is absent. The Broncos were optimistic about signing their top draft pick, Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler, chosen 11th overall in the NFL draft. "I don't think he'll hold out," Shanahan said. "I think Jay's a pretty smart guy and I think his agent is a very fair guy. We've always been fair." The Broncos and Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, have been negotiating all week. Cook did not return a phone call to his office Thursday. Second-round pick Tony Scheffler, a tight end from Western Michigan, signed a four-year deal Thursday. Receiver Domenik Hixon and guard Chris Kuper signed undisclosed deals, leaving Cutler as the only unsigned player from the Broncos' 2006 draft. Shanahan said he won't hold a grudge should Lelie decide to report. "I have nothing against Ashley," Shanahan said. "I'm going to play the best players. Ashley made a business decision to do what he thought was right for him and his future." Shanahan said he wouldn't be surprised if Lelie walked into training camp. He said he recently had an amicable conversation with the player. "If he doesn't report, I'm going to treat him like he sprained his ankle," Shanahan said. "I'm not going to worry about somebody who's not at the camp. He's got a contract and he's obligated to be here. We're holding all the cards." Lelie's agent, Peter Schaffer, didn't return a phone call Thursday. A trade could still be a possibility. The Broncos tried to deal him on draft day but didn't feel they were getting adequate compensation. Lelie's main contention is that he doesn't feel he has a chance to be the No. 1 receiver in Denver. With Rod Smith coming off a Pro Bowl season and the Broncos acquiring Javon Walker on draft day, Lelie could be Denver's third wideout. "I want to see him playing," Smith said Thursday. "I don't want him to think he's by himself." Since Lelie missed all the offseason workouts, Shanahan said he won't be a starter but has a chance to earn his position back with a good camp. "If he did come in, let's go have some fun," Shanahan said. "Let's win a championship." He doesn't see Lelie's absence being a locker-room distraction, predicting his teammates would accept him quickly. "I think it will take five minutes," Shanahan said. "(He'd say,) 'Guys, I think I did the best thing for me, it didn't work out, I'm ready to go, let's get after it. I don't care if I'm the third-team guy, the first-team guy, I'm going to show you at the end of the camp I deserve to be the No. 1.' That's the way men do it." Walker, who arrived to camp Thursday afternoon, would love to see Lelie show up. Walker went through a similar situation with Green Bay last season. He threatened to hold out but showed up in time for camp. "We'd be joking around and laughing," said Walker, who trained with Lelie in Phoenix during the offseason. "A lot of the guys would be excited to see him." One way or another, Shanahan just wants the situation resolved. "Guys want players who are going to come in here and want to be part of the team and want to work hard to be part of the team," Shanahan said. "If you don't want to be part of the team, then don't be part of the team. Just keep doing what you're doing and hold out." Last edited by Needa Pass Rush; 07-27-2006 at 05:30 PM.. |

Shanny also said that Stephen Alexander is on one-a-days. He said those that were only practicing once a day either had injury concerns, or were veterans he didn't have to worry about. I know he isn't ijured, so does that mean that Alexander is doing well, or does it just mean that because we are so thin at TE that we are trying to prevent injury to our only proven TE if at all possible?

IMO its the latter. Alexander is our only "proven" guy. If Nate/Leach/Sheff dont make any contribution its best to keep Alexander healthy. |

Four things I got from Shanahan press conference
1. That Marshall turned some head in mini0 camp 2. That Nasty Nate figure to be involved in the offense this year, and Duke was the reason Jeb was release 3. That BVP will make the team, and competition is going to tight for the lost space 4. That Lelie is in the dog house, and starting to really piss Shanahan off... |

Don't igKnorr Micah!
Cutler joins Broncos; Knorr returns Englewood, CO (Sports Network) - The Denver Broncos have reportedly come to terms with quarterback Jay Cutler, their first-round draft pick this year. The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News both report Cutler agreed to a six- year deal worth about $48 million. Cutler, chosen 11th overall, played collegiately at Vanderbilt and was an All- SEC first-team member in 2005, as he passed for more than 3,000 yards and for 21 touchdowns after connecting on nearly 60 percent of his attempts. Cutler did record nine interceptions, but those came from more than 460 pass attempts. The school record-holder of total offense (9,953 yards), passing offense (8,697 yards), touchdown passes (59), completions (710), and pass attempts (1,242), Cutler produced 12 touchdowns against only two interceptions during the final three games of the 2005 regular season. The Broncos also announced a contract for veteran Micah Knorr, who will likely take the place of Todd Sauerbrun at punter for at least the first four games of the season. Sauerbrun tested positive for the supplement ephedra and lost his appeal to reduce his four-game suspension. Knorr, who punted for Denver from 2002-04, has appeared in 73 games over five seasons, including two with Denver. He has averaged 41.4 yards per kick, including 82 balls downed inside the 20-yard line. The Broncos also signed tight end Tony Scheffler, a second-round selection, as well as fourth-round pick Domenik Hixon, a wide receiver. Denver also inked guard Chris Kuper, a fifth-round pick. |

From what I have read, with Heimerdinger, and other coach changes, there will be plenty of new wrinkles in our offense this year. Everything we have heard this year has been positive, with the exception of Lelie, and that may turn out to be OK. Addmittedly, we might use an addition player, say on the DL, TE or S position, BUT, the team is deep. I'm enthused. |
