Default Bugs Bunny in a stew pot?

At 6:30 am this morning I was leaving to take my wife to work in Dallas and looked out the window to see of all things...a white rabbit hopping across the road; not the Texas jackrabbit kind of critter that can run circles around just about anything mind you, but a bunny rabbit...an Easter basket suprise... Peter Cotontail...probably some little kid's pet who escaped his cage. Since this neighborhood is loaded with predatory cats who roam freely and beat each other to a pulp every night, I figured it was only a matter of a few minutes before Bugs Bunny was history. Now I think there's nothing more useless than a rabbit...all they do is crap and make more rabbits...

I returned an hour later and as I got out of the car, this thing came around the corner of the house and hopped right up to me. So what was I supposed to do? I cut the top off a box and covered it with a clothes basket and stuck him in the upstairs bathroom. A 20 minute survey of the neighborhood brought no answers as to who owns this critter. He can't have come to far. I'm shocked he made it as long as he did without winding up dead.

So what should I do with this thing? Does the animal shelter even take rabbits? Nobody answers the phone there.

Vote please.

How big is it? If it is full grown, we used to raise rabbits to eat. They are great fried like chicken or in stew. You can substiture rabbit for duck in any recipe too. Or keep it as a pet, they are very easy to care for.

It's pretty scrawny...not much meat on it. I'm not keeping it as a pet. I hate animals in the house and my kids would wind up ignoring it meaning I'd be the one feeding the thing. It's about half the size of a respectable looking house cat.

In that case since it's obviously a tame rabbit, it's probably some kids pet. Try to find it's owner. Don't put yourself out too much, but just spreading the news by word of mouth (like you seem to have done) will probably work. If nobody has said anything in a few days to a week, take it to a shelter. Good luck.

Well of course it's a tame rabbit...it hopped right up to me like I was his long lost uncle. It could be a kids pet...or maybe somebody like me got sick of smelling rabbit crap in their house and dumped it. I don't think I want this thing around for a week though. It'll stink up the house and my kids will be whining to keep it. Maybe a day or two...nobody claimed it when I went door knocking but most of them were gone already at work. If nobody claims it a shelter is a possibility I guess if they'll take it.

This one looks pretty easy...but it looks like I'd have to make a half recipe. I don't see going to the fuss of skinning something when I can buy chicken already prepared. Maybe my mother-in-law would take it though......she cooks up chitlins and pigs feet.

Dutch Oven Rabbit

2 dressed Rabbits, cut in pieces
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp sage
one onion
2-3 stalks celery
6-7 small carrots
1 tsp sugar

Add all ingredients to a large pot or dutch oven. Cover with water and cook on low heat for 3 hours. Remove Rabbits. Blend vegetables to thicken gravy. Add Rabbits and gravey back to pot. Simmer for 2-3 minutes. Serve.

it takes no time at all to gut/skin a rabbit. First time I did it I was 9 and it took me about 10 minutes with my dad telling me what to do. I could probably do it in about 2 minutes now, though I've never timed myself. You actually pull it right out of its skin, not really skinning it like a deer. Gutting it is pretty intuitive.

I had a couple rabbits when I was a kid that my grandfather rescued from someone else. Those little sh**s could get out of any cage we put them in. Smelled terrible. I wasn't heartbroken when they got out and we could not find them. Probably a nice dinner for the local fox den.

Haha, yep, Small Town Bumpkin. I grew up on a ranch near Montrose, CO. One of my favorite things to do during the winter as a kid was go rabbit hunting with my dad and little bro.

My dad hunted elk and deer...I never could get interested in that and I despise fishing too. Sitting in a cold mosquito infested lake bed freezing your *** off waiting for something you can buy in the supermarket. I'd like to do 2 months in the Alaskan wilderness shooting pix of wildlife but could care less about bagging a trophy. If something's good eating that's different...but I'm to lazy to have to hunt it down when I can buy it...

When a thread about a rabbit is the most posted on thread of the day(although it is still early) realy shows the bordom of the offseason. Anyone want to place odds on how long it will take to get 3 worthless threads started by Mock or Bob today?

How many days till training camp? These are the dog days of summer unless you're a baseball fan. And since I grew up following the Orioles that tells you all you need to know.

You prolly dont want to eat a rabbit thats been running around outside this time of year. If its been outside very long chances are good it has worms.

Oh yea no doubt on that. Plus a pet rabit that has no meat would be pointless to eat any time unless you were homeless and exceptionaly hungry.

I hadn't thought of that, you're probably right. Worms can't hurt you if you cook it thouroughly (sp?) but you need to check the liver for yellow spots. If it has them, then it has a disease similar to triconosis in pigs. You're probably better off just taking it to a shelter.

That sounds good. I've eaten many many weird things, but Rabbit isn't one of them.

It appears to be someone's pet. I'd do what I can to get it to an animal shelter/pet store and hope the owner comes looking for it. I couldn't kill it in good conscience. The other alternative would have been to release it and see what happens. Either way, I would know I didn't directly contribute to the critter's demise...

Well the 74% of you with good hearts and/or weak stomachs got your wish. I knocked on a few doors an hour ago and found Buggsies owners 5 doors down the street...and made three little girls pretty happy in the process. They've got 3 more just like this one. I wouldn't have eaten the critter anyway. Rabbit tastes just like chicken and I can cook up a chicken without knowing I ate some kids pet...
