atleast we were able to get through the draft and some of camp with him. losing him before the draft would have left us scrambling a little i think

I'm sure he is a good personel guy but in Denver all we need is Shanny and Sundquist.

Why is he leaving Denver? Same/similar position, no? Hate losing the homies, but it just can't be that big of a loss or Bowlen would have heaped the cash on him to keep him. I haven't been reading the stories on this, so admit to being ignorant of the details.

He became the General Manager in Houston and was only an assistant in Denver. This is a step up the ladder.

Early internal candidates would be Chris Truelove who was really instrumental in the Pro scouting dept with the Browncos and Jim Goodman who just moved up into personnel from scouting coordinator.

I'm willing to trade Lilly for the kidnapped Bronco Billy at this point. Yay!

It might set up a serious power struggle however.

Kubiak has allready made some very good moves. If they didn't want Bush however, I would of moved down.

Rick Smith is easily replaced. It is not like we have had the best personnel anyway, Shanahan has just been able to use it. Shanahan is the key, he has final say on every decision. He will be missed but it will not hurt us.

Sorry, but I disagree. Smith was the guy who did the footwork on scouting. Very important....

Its pretty big. If I was a GM, and wanted to imulate the Broncos, he'd be my GM... Damn, damn, maybe I worry too much...

Well, we threw away the stupid pills along with David Gibbs.

Since Auburn's defensive collapse in a Capital One Bowl loss and defensive coordinator David Gibbs' no-show at the postgame news conference, rumors have swirled about his job status.
Daddy, make them go away! All I know is that our drafts are finally half ass respectable. I think Smith will be a fine GM for Pubes in due time.

Shanahan can only do so much. He had to kick Rhodes to the curb and run the defense a few years ago, and Sundquist has been a savior. Shanahan won't ever stand in anyone's way on a promotion, but it's a shame because Smith DID to alot of legwork on draft picks.

Smith to be named Texans GM
By Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News
June 5, 2006
Denver Broncos assistant general manager Rick Smith will be introduced this afternoon as general manager of the Houston Texans, according to league sources.

Smith accepted the job Saturday night, filling a position that became available when Charley Casserly resigned shortly after the NFL draft. Smith, along with former Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, will chart the football fortunes for the Texans.

Kubiak was hired as the team's coach in January.

Smith did not return a call seeking comment Sunday, and Texans officials had no announcement other than to say there was a 2:30 p.m. MDT news conference scheduled today.

Smith, in his 10th season with the Broncos, was in Houston on Thursday and Friday for a second round of interviews. He also had been to Houston to visit in May with owner Bob McNair.

Though the Texans are coming off a league-worst 2-14 record in 2005, Smith expressed plenty of optimism Friday about a move from the Broncos, saying from Houston, "I think that there's a marriage there that could take place between what I know and certainly what's been done here, and I think that could be successful."

Given McNair's deep pockets as an owner and the quality of the team's facilities, it was a coveted opening for many in the league when Kubiak, and now, Smith, were hired.

Green Bay Packers pro personnel director Reggie McKenzie also interviewed for the job, as did former New Orleans Saints general manager Randy Mueller.

Smith was the only one to get a second interview.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Friday he expected Smith to be hired and that he expected to take his time to fill the position because there was "no hurry." Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said last month during the league meetings he expected Smith to get the job as well.

Smith joined the Broncos in 1996 and spent his first four years with the team as an assistant coach. He has spent the past six years in the team's personnel department.
