Default Dorsett Davis

I know a few people was wondering where he was and if Denver could resign him for depth.

Dorsett Davis had painful choice

SoCals link: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/C...02318-sun.html

By JONATHAN HUNTINGTON -- Edmonton Sun

Dorsett Davis was faced with a brutal choice.

With a starting job on the Denver Broncos' defensive line at stake in 2004, he had to decide if he was going to cut off his damaged left pinky finger.

"I had got the pinky caught in the side of an offensive lineman's helmet two weeks into training camp and he pulled one way and I pulled the other way," remembered Davis.

"I pulled the tendon from the bone."

If he amputated the finger, he would miss little of training camp and would be the starting defensive tackle that season. But if he chose to keep the digit, he would need immediate surgery and would lose the job.

"I was a phone call away from cutting my finger off just because I wanted to play that bad," recalled Davis.

But he kept the finger - which explains why he is now in northern Alberta trying to keep his football career alive in Edmonton Eskimo training camp.

"I didn't want to be a nine-finger guy walking around," said Davis.

By keeping the pinky, he spent the entire 2004 season on injured reserve in Denver - and when he was ready to fight for the job in training camp in 2005, it had already been filled.

It was a harsh lesson in reality, but it hasn't left Davis bitter or frustrated while battling for a CFL job at Clarke Stadium.

Even after getting cut from three NFL mini- camps (Oakland, Washington and Miami) this spring because he was told he needed more game experience, the former third-round NFL draft choice carries a good attitude.

And he's certainly getting good reviews from the Green and Gold.

"Dorsett is doing an excellent job. We are happy he is here," said defensive line coach Dennis Winston.

With non-import Steve Charbonneau practically guaranteed one of the defensive tackle positions, Davis is battling with CFL veterans Jabari Issa and Robert Brown for the other tackle job.

"It is going to be a battle to the end," said Winston.

But it's a battle that Davis believes he is going to win.

"I think I am going to be on this roster," said the 27-year-old 300-pound Mississippi native.

He has two more weeks of training camp and two pre-season games against Saskatchewan to ensure his prediction comes true

Ronnie Lott had the same injury, and cut it loose. I think it was right before the NFC championship game, so it was a little different.

'I've heard the story goes I cut it off in the locker room myself and went back out,' Lott said.

He then joked, 'I forgot (the truth). It's like Babe Ruth pointing to center field. That's the kind of story it's turned out to be.'

In reality, Lott missed the remainder of the game, the final one of the regular season. He then had the finger temporarily repaired so he would be able to play in the NFC Wild Card game against the New York Giants the following week.

Eventually, doctors amputated the tip of the finger.

thats the real story

Sorry, but I just don't expect a guy to cut off his finger so he can play football with us. That's a life changing decision right there.

Lott had a pinkie tip I believe, Davis had a torn at the root finger I think. Big difference, and not the pinkie from what I remember. I think Davis finger was the index or something, not a pinkie.

I would still like to give him a chance but evidently he's going to Canada.

It was his pinky.

Regardless, if it was hurt more toward the knuckle, it isn't like like the tip knuckle. Shoot me. I missed that it was his pinkie...I remember wondering why he needed to go on IR actually. . Evidently he had to go on IR. It doesn't change anything about the team needing a DT and if you want to milk Wilkinson another year, I'm lukewarm.

I'd lose a finger to play for the Broncos. Especially if it was my pinky.

I don't know why Shanny hasn't given him a call but I'm not worried about it. I'm sure Shanny has a plan for a DT. There are a few out there.

Dennis Smith did essentially the same thing. He shunned any publicity about it, though. He's got this little baby finger on one of his hands.

The Big Kahuna was every bit the player that Lott was...just in a low profile town. People would talk about him if the Donks would have won the Superbowls that they lost.

They were both great players.(Lott/Smith) DS 49 doesn't take a back seat to anyone in Donks lore...not named Elway. What can you say about the guy...he was a 6 time pro bowler, and a beastly hitter.

A great football player...underappreciated by Broncos fans. A good deal of them anyway.

He thinks he's going to make the roster in CFL and we need him?

We have 3 DT and maybe a no name 4th. None are in the quality of Big Money and he's not some superman. I'm not sure if we wouldn't have to give compensation for Davis anyway. Maybe we can find something June 1. Who knows what the plan holds, I gave up guessing a few years ago. Some teams have a surplus, but it's odd we had 17 DL and we have very few DT's right now. I'm comfortable with the rest of depth.

I've called to re-sign Dorsett Davis about 10 times since the draft ... after all, he was the last man cut last fall - barely losing out to Demetrin Veal.

But the following excerpt turned me cold:

Quote:
... after getting cut from three NFL mini- camps (Oakland, Washington and Miami) this spring because he was told he needed more game experience, the former third-round NFL draft choice carries a good attitude.
Does anybody know if Dan Wilkinson is a decent character guy? If so, he'd be my choice to sign. I know he's considering retirement, but we could lure him back for the following two reasons:
1. He'd be part of a platoon, and would play half-time, tops.
2. He'd have a real chance to win a ring.

Big Daddy never lived up to his status as #1 draft choice. While the last couple of years he been decent, his stay in Cinncy, Washington were dogged on rumors of laziness. It always scares me when player have been thru that many teams. I expect were stuck with DTs we have on the roster. Beside we have in the past made something of nothing before

I thought he had retired, but it appears that he was trying out for the Fins-

Coach Nick Saban said Sunday no decision had been made on signing players who tried out this weekend. "We'll make a decision sometime in the future," Saban said. Among the veterans who tried out for the Dolphins this week were Kyle Turley, former Giants linebacker Barrett Green, former Denver defensive tackles Dorsett Davis and Mario Fatafehi and former Eagles offensive line Steve Sciullo. Another reason why I hate Offseason.

Scrub fever runs wild.

Where even the biggest busts and non players make news like the (possible) return of (Davis) Middlebrooks.

Where's a Kellen Wincycle when you need one?!

Sometimes you have to decide whats more important... your team and a million dolar contract.... or your pinky.
