Default Bush Denies Eavesdropping

Bush denies eavesdropping on U.S. phones
But president sidesteps issue of compiling millions of call records

Updated: 1:03 p.m. ET May 16, 2006
WASHINGTON - President Bush insisted Tuesday that the United States does not listen in on domestic telephone conversations among ordinary Americans. But he declined to specifically discuss the government’s alleged compiling of phone records, or whether it would amount to an invasion of privacy.

“We do not listen to domestic phone calls without court approval,” Bush said in an East Room news conference with Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

“What I’ve told the American people is we’ll protect them against an al-Qaida attack. And we’ll do that within the law,” Bush said.

The president’s new press secretary, Tony Snow, later insisted that Bush’s comments did not amount to a confirmation of published reports that the NSA’s surveillance was broader than initially acknowledged and that it included secretly collecting millions of phone-call records.

Bush said, “This government will continue to guard the privacy of the American people. But if al-Qaida is calling into the United States, we want to know, and we want to know why.”

However, he did not respond directly when asked whether it was a violation of privacy for the National Security Agency to seek phone records from telephone companies.

A Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled for Thursday on Bush’s nomination of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden to head the Central Intelligence Agency. As the NSA director from 1999-2005, Hayden oversaw the government’s warrantless surveillance program.

Questions about that program, and new revelations about the NSA’s phone data bank, may be obstacles to Hayden’s confirmation.

Bush did appear to acknowledge the NSA sweep of phone records indirectly, saying that the program referred to by a reporter in a question “is one that has been fully briefed to members of the United States Congress in both political parties.”

“They’re very aware of what is taking place. The American people expect their government to protect them within the laws of this country and I’m going to continue to do just that,” he said.

There is already proof that he has done just that.

Peace activists, environmentalists and Quakers were among those targeted in the NSA's spying, according to the Times, which held release of its series for one year, under pressure from the White House, and reconfirmed facts.

Yes.

i may disagree with some of the things he has done lately, but I trust he is a truthful man, and he has the best interest of the nation at mind.

ACLU is a Fckin joke, I mean the ACLU defended the North American Man Boy Love Association, saying that although the organization champions the criminal rape of children, it has a right to do that under free expression.

So are you trying to claim that the ACLU's facts aren't straight in this instance, i.e., that peace activists, environmentalists and Quakers were not among those targeted in the NSA's spying?

You might want to do a Google search before you make that your final answer.

the ACLU infringes on the rights of the every day american NOT to have to put up with the special interests groups mantra every single day. True, possibly, slanted in their presentation of the facts, almost twisted? Absolutely, at every turn. ....they are a detriment and a black eye to the every day american and aide terrorists most of the time. They need to be tried and sentenced just like the damn terrorists. Disgrace to america..dman

dman,

that is another issue - I do agree the aclu wipes their butt with the constitution as much as most presidential administration - but i have found other documentation that does back their assertion. However, they are using these groups to shield the subversive groups.

It's true, unfortuantely. But didn't we all know it would be, when bushii said he wasn't going to follow the law to get warrants.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10454316/

Actually what I found was the above monitoring of anti-war groups by the DOD. Did they tap?

And as for the quakers, this appears to be the nut.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10454316/

It is the smoking gun to show warrantless taps on peace activists? no. But its getting closer

I lost you. Who is subversive.

As for the aclu. Thier job is to push the liberty envelope, but they do look stupid much of the time. I think it goes with the territory. Great country to have such a group.

for example:

some environmentalists are very much whacko - but the aclu will push say... WWF knowing that it opens the door for greenpeace militants.

hmmm, yeah I recall the aclu trying to get the Klan a parade permit in Den on the same day there was some black thing going on. Recipe to a riot.

Just lost me because I don't really see the peace activist people the NSA and DOD are watching as subversive. Subversive, imo, implies someone is trying to destroy something in society. Spiking trees is NOT a good thing.

I read that book to my daughter last fall. It's wonderful. Hiaason does a great job with the characters. I think the movie will disappoint me, but the movie version of Because of Winn Dixie was very charming, though the dog bore nor resemblence to the dog in the book, but hey, you gotta go with the dog ya got. I'm having a hard time believing that the Frigging Mouse won't botch up environmental pranksterism.

It's a different disney. This mouse will make sure it gets enough pomp on all it's stations to make people scream over it

NSA may tap disney. Prolly already is over benefits to gay and lesbian partners, not to mention the annual gay pride day at "the World."
