Paris suburb names street for Mumia Abu-Jamal

PHILADELPHIA - A street in a Paris suburb has been named in honor of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia police officer.

"In France, they see him as a towering figure," said Suzanne Ross, co-chair of the Free Mumia Coalition of New York City, who was part of an April 29 ceremony to dedicate the Rue Mumia Abu-Jamal in the city of St. Denis.

Ross said the street is in the town's Human Rights district, which includes Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Abu-Jamal, a former radio reporter and member of the Black Panther party, was sentenced to death in 1982 for the shooting of 25-year-old Daniel Faulkner. He has maintained his innocence. His writings and taped speeches have made him a cause celebre among Hollywood activists, foreign politicians and some death-penalty opponents who believe he was the victim of a racist justice system.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year agreed to consider three counts of Abu-Jamal's appeal, allegations that there was racial bias in jury selection, that the prosecutor gave an improper summation and that a judge in a previous appeal was biased.

Faulkner's widow, Maureen, called the street dedication "disgusting" and urged Philadelphia residents planning a visit to Paris this summer to cancel their trips. In 2001, the Paris City Council made Abu-Jamal an honorary citizen.

"This is so unnerving for me to get this news," Faulkner said from Los Angeles, where she lives. "It's insulting to the police officers of Philadelphia that they are naming a street after a murderer."

Daniel Faulkner has been honored by a memorial plaque installed at the scene of the shooting at 13th and Locust Streets in Philadelphia.

Get a clue. This is not France and the French people naming a street. It's a suburb made up of 90% muslims from other countries. It's like saying that a million illegal immigrants marching in American streets waving Mexican flags represent the will of the American people.

What would the U.S. government do if some suburb of South Philly named a street, "Louis Farrakhan Avenue?" Nothing.

This always amuses me.. for two reasons.

1) It was 60 years ago. They still are a sovereign nation and I don't think their foreign policy neccesarily should dissolve down to "well they helped us 60 years ago, so we should just do whatever to make them happy." After all, we (as a country) exist because of France... so I guess we should just make them happy as well?

2) Its not like we entered WWII out of anything but self interest. Before Pearl Harbor the people of the United States where quite against entrance into the conflict. They didn't really seem to care that France had been taken over.. and certainly where not in any hurry to rectify that.

Americans fought and died valiantly in WWII and we did some really great things... but lets keep history in its proper perspective.

It's POSSIBLE the government of France doesn't condone this, but we know where the Paris government officials stand. They made this guy an honorary citizen in 2001. Therefore, **** Paris...Matt Leinart did...

You are talking about the "greatest" generation on earth. They did away with Hitler, mussolini and the off kilter japanese empire of the 40's. I am keeping it in perspective, they were the greatest of all generations, bar none.....dman

Never said they didn't do great things... (although I choose not to measure greatness by military might, I admire them much more for building infrastructure and putting us on the moon), but simply pointed out that I don't see how what happened 60 years ago makes all of France beholden to our happiness..

Your point, I see. You're probably correct on that, especially since a large part of the population (don't know percentage just heard the term 'large') is muslim by faith. They wouldn't go out of their way to teach anyone what happened either. A very conceited group of people they truley are..from my experience anyway..dman
