Jaguars | Smith decided to retire
Thu, 11 May 2006 05:09:58 -0700

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jimmy Smith has decided to retire from the NFL after 12 seasons. He has reportedly told head coach Jack Del Rio of his decision. The Jaguars are expected to hold a press conference Thursday, May 11, unless Smith has a last-minute change of heart.

Wow, I thought he would play one more.

Here is a spot to look to trade Leile. Ask for a D-line man.

I'm pretty sure this comes as a shock to the Jags considering they didn't draft a wideout.

Their depth chart at the minute looks like this.

LWR 82 SMITH Jimmy SF95 | 18 Jones Matt 05/1 | 85 Hankton Cortez CF03 | 13 Stamps Fred W/SF |
RWR 19 Wilford Ernest 04/4 | 11 Williams Reggie 04/1 | 84 Owens Chad 05/5 | 89 Hill Kahlil SF05

Here's their D-Line depth chart.

LDE 97 Hayward Reggie U/Den | 75 WILEY Marcellus SF05 | 00 Wyche Jamrs 06/7* | 96 Davis Jim CF05 | 70 Curry Walter SF05
LDT 99 Stroud Marcus 01/1 | 91 Maddox Anthony 04/4 | 94 WILLIAMS Tony U/Cin | |
RDT 98 Henderson John 02/1 | 92 Meier Rob 00/7 | | |
RDE 95 SPICER Paul SF00 | 93 McCray Bobby 04/7 | 57 Hawkins Brent 06/5* | 47 Hand Omari SF04 | 78 Patterson Elton P/Cin

Meier 35 tackles, 6 sacks 1 FR wouldn't be a bad swap or even McCray 5.5 sacks 1FR.

Exactly what I was thinking. This is a real opportunity to get rid of Lelie! Finally!

Bingo, but I don't know if they want any WR's with Matt Jones, Ernest Wilford, and Reggie Williams as they view them (incorrectly or not) as their WR's of the future.

Not so sure about that. They already have Two First round WR's on the Roster in Williams and Matt Jones. Wilford has been a good #3 and would Be a good #2 as well.

No doubt the team had an inkling this might happen though. Jimmy Smith has too much class to just decide to retire without giving the team notice before the draft and offseason began.

Wilford's their deep guy anyway 41-681-7 last season, avg 16.6 yds per catch. I'd reckon Ash would be No4 there and No5 if Jimmy did a u-turn.

Class act who continued to perform late into his career. The league and the Jags are losing a quality guy.

Heers to retirement.

I don't know what kind of person Smith was on and off the field but he was definitely one of the best WRs of this era.

Quite often overlooked when the jaguars took a nose dive but still an amazing WR.

Jags are fine at wide out as long as Reggie steps up.

Jimmy Smith, one of the most prolific receivers over the course of the past 10 seasons, has abruptly decided to retire from professional football.

FOXSports.com has learned that Smith, who was selected to the Pro Bowl for five consecutive seasons from 1997-2001, has informed Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach Jack Del Rio of his intention to call it quits after 12 seasons.

----------------

With wording like this it makes me wonder if it actually wasn't planned. Either way Lelie's agent needs to get on the phone.

Which is a huge question mark. He's underperformed.
