It's nice to see that Cutler is not going to be a money monger. The kid has got fire, and it's nice to have that in a QB. Thank God we got him....
Plummer prepares to battle Cutler for Denver starting job By Brett Hait, bhait@nashvillecitypaper.com May 03, 2006 Jay Cutler couldn’t have been happier when the Broncos made him the 11th selection in last weekend’s NFL Draft. Photo by Mike Rapp. Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer doesn’t feel threatened by the presence of Jay Cutler, whom the team selected in the first round of last weekend’s NFL Draft. In fact, Plummer, a nine-year league veteran, said he understands the decision and is prepared to help groom Cutler to be his eventual replacement. Plummer met with Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on Monday. “I talked with Mike and I think I would have made the same pick,” said Plummer, who is signed through 2009. The Broncos traded up to the No. 11 slot in the first round to select Cutler, the 2005 Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Plummer, who guided Denver to the AFC Championship game a year ago and produced his best season, plans to share his knowledge with Cutler. “I know what the league’s about, and that’s what you do as a quarterback,” Plummer told the Rocky Mountain News. “You pass on to the next guy what you know, and hopefully whenever his time comes, he does well.” Plummer said he still expects to be Denver’s starter in 2006 as Cutler learns the ropes. “I’m going to play this next year as hard as I can, and if this kid is all that he’s cut out to be and he’s a great football player and he beats me out in a year, then they made the best decision they’ve ever made,” Plummer said. “But if not, I’m going to continue doing what I do, which is try to win football games.” Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson said Cutler’s competitive nature could make for an interesting battle in the Broncos’ training camp this summer. “Jay will prepare to be the starter,” Johnson said. “He will compete, no doubt about it. He’s that kind of guy. He’s not very patient, and he’ll get after it.” First, Cutler and the Broncos must agree to financial terms. The 11th pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Troy defensive lineman DeMarcus Ware, signed a five-year, $13 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys, $10 million of which is guaranteed. “They have a job to do, and I understand that,” Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, said of the Broncos. “They understand I’ve got my job to do. We’ll get it done, but it will be awhile. It will be several weeks.” Cutler just wants the best of both worlds. “I want to meet in the middle,” he said. “I’m not going to try to get a ridiculous amount of money out of them. I just want to get paid and get playing as quickly as possible.” |
