Javon Walker's contract is nearly done. Soon, he'll begin trying to prove on the field he's nowhere close to being finished as an NFL star after a torn right knee ligament ended last season almost before it started.

The receiver, who was dealt Saturday by the Green Bay Packers to the Denver Broncos for a second-round draft pick, is completing his yearly training routine in Arizona. He is expected to join his new team Monday to coincide with the return of the coaching staff from vacation.

"You've got to realize this kid has a point to prove," Walker's agent, Kennard McGuire, said Tuesday. "And that point is that he's back."

Walker, 27, had his best season in 2004, establishing career bests in catches (89), receiving yards (1,382) and touchdown receptions (12) to place himself among the league's elite.

The idea of going back to the Pro Bowl is a strong motivator that has helped drive Walker during his rehabilitation since surgery in October, McGuire said.

The Broncos checked out Walker's recovery during his visit to Denver hours before pulling the trade. They're convinced he'll be ready for full activity by training camp.

"He's one of those players that you're probably going to have to slow down," McGuire said.

The Broncos liked the speedy Walker enough that they began making inquiries about his availability in February at the scouting combine.

It was common knowledge around the league Walker wanted out of Green Bay because the Packers refused to address his contract situation after the 2004 season and later because quarterback Brett Favre spoke out publicly against him missing off-season activities.

Walker reported to camp on time, but the damage seemingly was done.

It got worse when he suffered the injury in the first game. In March, Walker said he never again would play for the Packers, preferring to retire than play for Green Bay.

But McGuire, hired after Walker's disagreements with Green Bay started, said his client shouldn't be judged by one demonstration of frustration.

"The only thing the general public knows is there was some disenchantment with his contract," McGuire said. "But other issues came into play with that," including Favre's comments, which were among "several things that could cause someone to feel uncomfortable in a certain environment."

The trade apparently has helped erase those feelings, and not only because his agent and the Broncos are smoothing out the fine details on the long-term agreement, which probably will be for six years.

"In the final analysis, he's excited about the opportunity to come play in Denver," McGuire said. "Everybody knows it wasn't his desire to play another year in Green Bay. And to have the opportunity to go to an organization that's a proven winner, already with so many talented players there, he saw it as a win-win for him."

I can't wait to watch this guy in our system. Trying to keep expectations in check since he's coming off of the injury, but he's going to do big things for us.

Popps, it's tough to hold the emotions in check. Agreed. This guy could light it up on a major scale here if it is handled correctly. ....dman

A younger version of TO, the player on the field and not off of it? Perhaps.

Man, I hope he's healthy by the beginning of the season. No one will really know until he takes the first real hit.

Yes he is. Man, we needed a playmaker like him. I think our offense is going to be absolutely killer this season. Jake is playing great and he has one more weapon to play with, and with the addition of Heimerdinger it's going to help our passing game a lot I think. Even if Lelie goes somwhere else we have the talant to have a very good third wr, so the wr core should be pretty good even if Lelie leaves. We have that rookie TE that's pretty good and alexander and Duke is going to work out good. our running game is always there so that won't be a problem. I can't wait to see what our offense is going to do this year. We're gonna tear it up this year.

This is one of the best offseason in recent memort considering we lost Kubic, but we turned around and got dinger, we lost anderson, but our running game is there every year any way so..., we lost putz but got a very good TE in the draft, we could lose Lelie but we got Walker, and I think Lelie can be replaced any way. Then we got Dumerville who led the nation in sacks, and we needed a player like him, and we got a center and a very good qb for the future.

The present and future look very bright.

I've thought he looked like a younger T.O. since he came out of school. I don't think there's any reason to worry that he'll end up a flake like Owens. But, keep in mind... there does seem to be some small amount of prima donna running in all receivers not named Rod Smith or Hines Ward. Hopefully he'll keep it in check. He'll certainly have every chance to prove himself in Denver. Great system, great coach, great QB, great running game.

I was glad JW decided not to hold out last year, showed a whole lot more integrity that TO. I'm hoping he doesn't get a swelled head here, cause he'll have to do a lot to equal what Rod has done for this team and Rod has never even threatened to hold out. I know Javon can do quite a lot for the team and I'll root for him.

Popps you seem to be contradicting yourself.

Here you say you can't wait to watch Walker play in Denver's system on another thread you stated how you couldn't wait to see Cutler play and that he is going to be great.

But then there are a couple of threads where you rail the Broncos for ignoring the defense. What's up

Have you made a fundemental change in your thinking?

It seems to me you want everything. Denver can't draft both offense and defense with equal intensity. Denver went with Cutler and Walker in the first and second and then they went with OL, WRs, TE and a DE with the rest of their picks. They also signed a DT, RB, ILB and a S as UFAs.

Perhaps he, like I, beleives that both Cutler AND Walker will do well...?

Well, if he likes the Cutler and Walker choices why does he rail on Denver for ignoring the defense?

Umm, because they have 6 guys on the defensive line that wouldnt start on any of the "elite" teams in this league.

Maybe he is a little upset that we didnt address our most glaring hole at pass rush.

I don't remember where I saw this, but Javon is working out in Arizona with ASHLEY LELIE! They're BOYS! I guess Ash isn't bothered by the signing because he "quit" before it happened, right?

Besides, where's the room for Lelie?:

Starters:
ROD SMITH
JAVON WALKER

Backups:
DAVID TERRELL
CHARLIE ADAMS

BackBackups:
DAVID KIRCUS
BRANDON MARSHALL
DARIUS WATTS
TODD DEVOE

Right there ahead of Terrell and Adams is where there is room for Lelie because he is better than both of those tards.

David Terrell career: 54 games, 128 catches for 1,602 yards, 9 TDs (with Bears QBs throwing to him)

Lelie: 65 games, 168 catches for 3,007 yards, 12 TDs

So in 11 more games, and 40 more catches, Lelie has 3 more TDs.

Talk amongst yourselves . . .

Ashley apparently lacks confidence. He doesn't like being the #3 WR. So, is he saying he doesn't have the ability to perform at the same level as Rod and Javon? I guess the guy's afraid of a challenge.
