Default Competition at QB

great move getting cutler. having been a longtime plummer fan since ASU, the one thing I know is jake loves to compete. I think Shanny has seen that in jake also and this new competition may just be exactly what jake needs to take that next step (not many left for him except get to SB and WIN a SB) Win a couple with jake, then let cutler take over = a bright longterm winning future for bronc's fans.

probably the best move in the draft in my books. competition is a great thing. Look how well it panned out for Brees? Can Jake pull a Brees?

right, rivers made brees step up. this doesn't have to be an either/or situation, it can be a win win and i think shanny is counting on it. montana/young made it work for the long term success of the team. i hope that's what happens here.

The Mike Shanahan-Jay Cutler marriage is going to be one of those 15-year unions. I said to Shanahan Sunday night: "If Cutler's right when he says he hasn't talked to you guys for two months, how in the world did you end up taking him with the 11th pick in the draft?'' Shanahan laughed.

"The first time I talked to him was yesterday, after the pick, and we met here today,''' Shanahan said from Denver. "I studied him and watched him and looked at the draft board and didn't say very much to anyone. I said, 'I'm just going to shut up and hope it works out.' I've been in this thing long enough. You don't give anyone your hand. Don't give anyone an idea, or it's out very quickly. Keep it to yourself.

"I did call [Tennessee Titans coach] Jeff Fisher, who I'm very close to, and I know Jeff to a T, and I just said to him, 'Give me Cutler's good points and bad points.' And he said, 'Mike, there are no bad points.' Jeff knows football players. And I thought, if I could get up there around 11, I'm going to try to get him. When I really got to thinking about it, I asked myself, 'How often am I ever going to have the chance to do something like this again, to get a guy like this?' Maybe never.''

But, I said to Shanahan, 'You have never spoken to the man. How can you pick a guy who is a total stranger?'

"Well, you watch his interviews on tape, and you feel you know the guy,'' Shanahan said. "You pick up the phone and talk to him or his agent, and all of a sudden it's going to get out, and I just couldn't risk that.''

I also wondered, as does all of Colorado, about the psyche of Jake Plummer after the move.

"Haven't talked to him yet,'' said Shanahan. "The draft just ended. We'll talk. But if you're a guy who's afraid of competition, you're not made of the right stuff. A guy's got to compete and win the job.''

And one final note from Shanahan about Laurence Maroney. "I loved him,'' Shanahan said. "I think the Patriots got a steal. An absolute steal. I think he's going to be the best back in the league.''

Looks like Shanny did his research through tape and Jeff Fisher. Plus, if the Broncos were going to take a RB, it would have been Maroney.

How many QBs can you remember that got this kind of endorsement?

Get use to hearing, "How many SBs has Shanny won without John and Jay?"

In Shanny's defense, I think he has gotten alot more mileage out of average QB's like Griese & Frerotte than most other teams and coaches can get. Also, I don't know how good Plummer's career would be going if he went to a team like NYJ or Cincy or Cleveland or Detroit, etc...

Watch and compare how Jake responds to the situation as oppposed to Lelie. Jake will attack this like a warrior while Lelie will whine like a little girl in the sand box.

I think the Patriots had the best 1st and 2nd round picks, then the Jets.

But we did well to put the pressure on Jake.

I say give Jake one more year...then auction him off. He could fetch us a 1st rounder easily.

TY for the artcile!!

I agree, i have also been a fan since his days in ASU. Jake is a competitor, im not sure at his age he has another level, but he wont be allowed to slip AT ALL, and IMO he wont. Another year or 2 and then the reins will be given over.

You are not serious are you?
I want to meet the chump that falls for that one.

The last year of success is because of Shanahan "reigning" him in and dumbing down the play book. I am not certain other teams want to have to do that with a "1st rounder"

I just hope Jake doesn't implode from the competition. I'm just excited to finally have the draft over. Now I can actually go into "off-season" mode and sell some insurance.

That's a little Shanny exaggeration there also. He told everyone we got first round value in Clarett last year. Take it for face value: they like Cutler, he has maybe the most potential of any QB in the draft. Other than that, it'll just have to play out before we can make heads or tails of it all.

"Sorry Jacob, it's just business..."

I just said to him, 'Give me Cutler's good points and bad points.' And he said, 'Mike, there are no bad points.' Jeff knows football players. And I thought, if I could get up there around 11, I'm going to try to get him. Seriously, I hope Jake doesn't pull a hissy fit, we need him next year. 2007 is anyones guess. He revived his career here and if a fine QB. Lets not get ahead of ourselves. How do you think Deuce feels in N.O.? It's just business. Let's not nail the coffin shut on Jake just yet and send him off with a ring. But I gotta say, this stokes me as much as VD and Jay came cheap. He fell right in our lap. We would of had to gut our draft for VD, and he's going to be expensive. Two days later and I'm still doing cartwheels. I was always in favor of bringing in Walker as well. I figure we let Lelie play out the string so we don't rush Walker but he's on track to hit training camp ready to cut. There is no reason to rush him at all. I haven't been this stoked since we got Elway.

Shanny will get the Phil Jackson Treatment. "Yeah he won lots of championships, but look at the player he had."

I think your theory is flawed. Plummer led us to 13-3 without any added competition. What this does is give us a credible backup, as BVP can't complete passes very well. HOWEVER, the addition of Marshall and Hixon gives some of the WRs a much needed push to perform better. Someone IS getting competition, but it isn't Plummer.

We had to take a top-notch QB when we could. Normally, a team must have a really bad season to get a good QB in the draft and we did it after a campaign that saw us be the AFC runner-up.
