Default Legwold's Mock: Very Interesting

He doesn't have ANY Wrs selected in the first round!

NFL writer Jeff Legwold projects the selections in the opening round of the draft today:

Houston T, CB, DT, Not bad. All they did was stun the entire league Friday night, agreeing to a contract with the player they deemed the best on the board . . . Mario Williams, DE, North Carolina State

New Orleans T, DT, C, Merry Christmas. Maybe they don't really need him with Deuce McAllister already in the backfield, but there is no question about the best available player here. Unless they get an offer they can't possibly refuse to move down, they get the gift that will keep on giving in . . . Reggie Bush, RB, Southern California

Tennessee Titans S, G, C, QB, LB, CB, RB, They have gone around and around on this one and also would entertain offers to move down and take Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler, but they probably will stay here and select . . .Vince Young, QB, Texas

New York Jets TE, QB, T, C, DT, This cap-strapped team needs players all over the depth chart, and some might hand the Jets an offensive tackle here. But they do business in New York, and New York is about names on the marquee, so the pick is . . . Matt Leinart, QB, Southern California

Green Bay Packers WR, RB, QB, C, G, CB, LB, General manager Ted Thompson traded down three times in the draft last year. He likes to build with picks, so he is expected to try to move down again. If they stay here . . . A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State

San Francisco 49ers FB, WR, S, LB, DE, TE, Coach Mike Nolan said the team sat back in free agency for the most part because it believes in the draft. The 49ers have two first-rounders to work with after a trade with the Broncos, and use the first one on . . . Vernon Davis TE, Maryland

Oakland Raiders QB, S, T, DT, They'll take a hard look at Cutler, despite having signed Aaron Brooks and having Grand Junction's Andrew Walter as a prospect, but having lost Charles Woodson in the secondary, they take . . . Michael Huff, S, Texas

Buffalo Bills S, LB, DT, T, G, CB, With the washout of former No. 1 pick Mike Williams up front, and the fact they surrendered an alarming 43 sacks this past season, they quickly select . . . D'Brickashaw Ferguson T, Virginia

Detroit Lions LB, DE, G, T, CB, S, They wanted Huff in the worst way, and still could have him if the Raiders pass. It isn't their position of greatest need, but they want bodies along their defensive front, so they take . . . Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Florida State

Arizona Cardinals S, CB, C, G, T, DT, This is a team that passed on an opportunity to take Byron Leftwich in 2003, passed on an opportunity to take Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 and has 34-year-old Kurt Warner at quarterback. The Cardinals can't pass on . . . Jay Cutler QB, Vanderbilt

St. Louis Rams LB, S, CB, DT, DE, TE, They are looking to bail out of this spot because they need so much on defense. They'll take a look at Manny Lawson here, as well as Tye Hill, but in the end, they think they need . . . Chad Greenway CB, Clemson

Cleveland Browns NT, RB, LB, DE, Coach Romeo Crennel needs defense, wants defense, and looks at the board if it shakes this way and finds just the guy he wants moving around up front in the Browns' 3-4 in . . . Haloti Ngata DT, Oregon

Baltimore Ravens C, G, T, S, DT, QB, LB, This is another team desperately trying to move down to secure more picks. It will only pick twice today if it doesn't. The Ravens have needs along the offensive front and would have given Cutler a long look had he slipped this far, but they think they found a player to make a safety in . . . Johnathan Joseph CB, South Carolina

Philadelphia Eagles T, WR, LB, DT, LB, They have plenty of needs on defense after their dismal '05, but they also have tackle Tra Thomas coming off back surgery, so the prudent, by-the-numbers move is to take . . . Winston Justice T, Southern California

Denver Broncos-a* WR, RB, S, DT, They might look for a wide receiver, given that they are trying to move the unhappy Ashley Lelie, but if they take one, it's a significant reach in what should be a blue-chip pick. Mike Shanahan could break tradition and look at DeAngelo Williams before he takes . . . Laurence Maroney RB, Minnesota

Miami Dolphins S, WR, DT, LB, DE, They'll look at Florida's Chad Jackson, but they also are trying to trade for Javon Walker. The pass rushers available also will give them pause, but in the end, they need more speed in the middle of the field . . .Chad Greenway LB, Iowa

Minnesota Vikings NT, RB, LB, WR, QB, The Brad Childress regime has many needs, including at QB after the trade of Daunte Culpepper, but that value just isn't there with this pick. Neither is it at WR, so they grab the best athlete on the board . . . Manny Lawson DE/LB, North Carolina State

Dallas Cowboys DT, LB, S, WR, T, It's pretty clear where their thinking is early on draft day - they haven't used a first-round pick on an offensive player since 1997. That trend continues. They'd like to move up to get Lawson or move down to get Bobby Carpenter, but here, it's . . . Kamerion Wimbley DE, Florida State

San Diego Chargers LB, CB, T, After a 9-7 finish in '05, and with general manager A.J. Smith and coach Marty Schottenheimer openly talking about how they don't get along, there is a certain amount of pressure with this pick. So they go for need . . . Antonio Cromartie CB, Florida State

Kansas City Chiefs DE, CB, WR, They would have liked a shot at Wimbley, who is a Wichita, Kan., native, in this spot, but they need people in coverage, given that Eric Warfield is gone. The best player available at cornerback is . . . Jimmy Williams CB, Virginia Tech

New England Patriots RB, WR, LB, CB, S, They have been talking to Baltimore to try to move up for a linebacker, and also have had an eye on the cornerbacks who still are available, but they look to the future in . . . Nick Mangold C, Ohio State

San Francisco 49ers-b FB, WR, S, LB, DE, TE, They moved into this spot with their trade with the Broncos with a specific player in mind. They are happy to look and see that he's there . . . Bobby Carpenter LB, Ohio State

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR, LB, T, CB, WR, They allowed 41 sacks this past season and often juggled the starters up front in the offensive line. They'll look at the available cornerbacks, but in the end, they grab . . . Marcus McNeill T, Auburn

Cincinnati Bengals CB, S, TE, DE, DT, LB, They like some of the pass rushers on the board, including Mathias Kiwanuka, and give a look to some of the stretch-the-field tight ends, but with the playoff loss to the Steelers still ringing in their heads, they take . . . Donte Whitner S/CB, Ohio State

New York Giants WR, S, LB, T, With the loss of Will Allen, and with only one other proven CB on the roster in Sam Madison, the Giants likely have to look at secondary help. The value on the board is there in . . . Richard Marshall CB, Fresno State

Chicago Bears WR/KR, LB, S, TE, They'd like a receiver, so they would give Jackson a look, but, like a lot of teams in this area, they also would like to move down and take the player they really like in . . . DeMeco Ryans LB, Alabama

Carolina Panthers OL, KR, RB, S, TE, CB, The Panthers are built around a lug-it running game and need a back to complement DeShaun Foster, who continually has battled injuries. They'll give a gander to DeAngelo Williams as well, but in the end, they want some size in Denver's own . . . LenDale White RB, Southern California

Jacksonville Jaguars RB, G, LB, TE, T, They have considered trying to find a replacement for Fred Taylor in the backfield, and could use depth up front. But they have looked to offense early on draft day in recent years, so they take . . . Leonard Pope TE, Georgia

New York Jets-c TE, QB, T, C, DT, When C Kevin Mawae signed with Tennessee, the Jets had a hole in their offensive front to fill, but they signed Trey Teague in free agency as a short-term fix. They have plenty of needs, and a primary running back who will be 33 in May, so the pick is . . . DeAngelo Williams RB, Memphis

Indianapolis Colts DE, DT, OL, RB, LB, S, They are a play-action offense that lost one of its key components in free agency when Edgerrin James signed in Arizona. DeAngelo Williams didn't really fit them, and they might try to move down to make this pick, but the best back on the board here is . . . Joseph Addai RB, Louisiana State

Seattle Seahawks S, G, CB, DE, They have question marks in the secondary, especially S Ken Hamlin, who missed most of last season while recovering from a fractured skull, and are looking to defense if the board falls their way. Jason Allen might be too much of a medical risk to suit them, so they take . . . Davin Joseph G, Oklahoma

Pittsburgh Steelers LB, S, RB, Having lost Chris Hope in free agency, the Steelers need someone in the back of their defense alongside Troy Polamalu. Their choice is a medical risk, given his hip injury, but with his 4.39-second speed in the 40, they take a chance on . . . Jason Allen S, Tennessee

Didn't Gosselin have Holmes at #32 and that was it? I wouldn't have a problem with either CJ or SH if Denver took them with their 2nd.

Not one WR (unless you consider Davis to some degree) in the first round. Been a long time since that happened.
