Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman called the offices of San Diego and expressed interest in moving the Chargers to Las Vegas for the 2009 season. What a great mayor we have, all business - sport's business. I just saw the master plan for a huge sports complex north of Las Vegas near the speedway it includes indoor hockey arena, football/baseball stadium, indoor track, and swimming complex.

Las Vegas mayor contacts San Diego Chargers about relocating
Associated Press
SAN DIEGO - The Las Vegas Chargers?

That would be the football team's new name if Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has his way.

Goodman contacted the San Diego team this week about the possibility of starting talks to relocate to the gambling and entertainment mecca.

"Las Vegas is the fastest-growing city in the U.S.," Goodman said. "A new person moves here every six minutes. A new house is finished every 20 minutes. I'm thirsting for a major league team."

Team officials responded that their lease with San Diego bars them from talking with other cities until Jan. 1.

The Chargers, who have played in San Diego since 1961, want a new stadium. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said he sees the team as a regional asset but the city - which has a pension deficit of at least $1.43 billion - doesn't have the money to help pay for a new facility.

The San Diego City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a lease amendment that would allow the team to start looking for other locations in the county as early as next month.

The team would first contact county cities including Chula Vista, National City and Oceanside, which have expressed interest in the Chargers, said Mark Fabiani, the team's special counsel.

The team can talk with any U.S. city beginning Jan. 1.

Professional sports leagues have avoided locating teams in Las Vegas because they fear the influence of gambling. But Goodman called that a "red herring," noting that Nevada regulates sports betting.

Goodman's overture is "another in a long line of inquiries" the team has received since its latest lease with the city went into effect in August 2004, Fabiani said.

San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger said in January that he plans to pursue the team.

If the Chargers were to ever land in LAS VEGAS how bad could it be watching another Broncos game in my own back yard - LEEEEETS DOOOOOOO IIIIIT!!!! MAYBE THEN THE NFL WILL REALIZE THE TRUE POTENTIAL OF THE SUPER BOWL AND HOST IT IN THE ONLY CITY THAT DRAWS MORE PEOPLE TO IT DURING THE EVENT THAN THE HOST CITY ITSELF.

I Called the Mayors office to see if we could do anything to help....I'll keep you posted Slap!

They would be foolish not to put a pro team in Las Vegas. I don't see it happening, though.

I'm "game" for this one. Maybe mexico will send their local "pro" football team up to san diego to fill in the void when the chargers head to vegas. that way the "real" home team would be in san diego....dman

I don't think it will ever happen. Not only is the League trying to keep a tidy image, there's no way they would have a team in a city that allows sports betting.

To my understanding...any games that are hosted in Las Vegas cannot be wagered on...

Vegas doesn't need to send a letter to the Chargers they need to send it to the NFL offices. I don't think the NFL will be too thrilled about a team moving to Vegas when there is no team in L.A.

Mark my words, we will have a pro-team here within the next 5-10 years. The MLB offices and NBA offices have both been here to 'get a better understanding' of how professional sports booking works, in fact, the Devil Rays were seriously looking to move to Las Vegas with intentions for 2013. The Maloof bros are owners of many pro-teams and live here in Vegas - yet the leagues are okay with that? Guess what, the Maloofs can wager as long as they are within the Nevada state lines. Sooner or later, it will happen regardless of the betting. It is such a weak argument. The only 'man behind the curtain' lives in states where this is illegal.

LA is a joke market - they only want what they can't have. They have sufficient teams and with the Raiders profits plummeting it really builds a lack of interest for possible owners. They had 2 teams and lost both, don't cry about LA now. Been there done that and now their crying again for more NFL Vegas can put their money where your mouth is and other parts if necessary (it seems to be known for that anyway).

There might be a pro team but the NFL has always pretended Las Vegas doesn't exist and my guess is they will continue to do so.

And Vegas isn't much different than LA. Too many other things to do there. No one will care about an under performing franchise. Like New Orleans. People support the team but it's just another reason to march a Mardi Gras band around a stadium. Nobody really seems to mind the scoreboard nearly always favoring the opposition.
