Helton Improving; More Tests Today
April 24, 2006
Combined Wire Services

The music was a little louder and the mood a little lighter in Colorado's clubhouse Sunday.

A 3-2, 10-inning win over San Francisco wasn't the only thing the Rockies were celebrating.

First baseman Todd Helton seems to be improving, although the stomach ailment that landed him in the hospital and on the disabled list Friday remained a mystery 48 hours later.

"More a positive vibe because he is feeling better," team trainer Keith Dugger said.

Helton is expected to be released from Rose Medical Center after another battery of tests today. Dugger said doctors "haven't officially eliminated anything," but reiterated that Helton's condition isn't considered life-threatening.

"I think there is improvement," manager Clint Hurdle said. "More optimism maybe [Sunday] than there was [Saturday]."

Nobody in the organization could remember Helton complaining about his health until he confided in reliever Mike DeJean on Wednesday that he wasn't feeling well.

DeJean said he was unnerved Thursday when he went to Helton's ranch in Greeley, Colo., on a day off to "chase turkeys around and Todd didn't show up and didn't return my phone calls." He was hospitalized the next day with severe lower abdominal pain and a fever.

Clay Hensley of the Madres got sick in Denver last week, and according to the San Diego Union Tribune...what ailed Hensley supposedly found it's way into the Rockies club house as well. Perhaps Helton just got a double whammy.

DENVER -- After completing several diagnostic tests, Colorado Rockies team internist Dr. Allen Schreiber confirmed today his diagnosis for first baseman Todd Helton's stomach discomfort as acute terminal (meaning end of small intestine) ileitis (ill-eee-i-tis). Dr. Schreiber has prescribed more rest for the five-time All-Star before having Helton begin light exercises. No date has been determined for his return to the Rockies active roster.

The 32 year-old was released from Rose Medical Center in Denver on Monday April 24 after he had been hospitalized since Friday April 21 with the stomach discomfort. At the time of his illness he had appeared in 15 games for the Rockies and was hitting .347 with a homer and nine RBI plus a National League leading .529 on-base percentage.

Okay, I like that definition of terminal better than what I had heard. Sorry to scare you folks. Best wishes to Todd for a healthy recovery!

I hope he gets back for you guys soon. Went to the game here in Philly last night. Even though we got the win, I was a little dissapointed that I didn't get to see him play. Found out after the fact that he was sick. Glad it's nothing serious.

Terminal ileitis -- inflammation of the end portion of the small intestine. Typically this means Chrons disease.... and its a terrible awful nasty disease.

Terminal in this sense means the "distal end" of the ileum (the last segment of small intestine). It doesn't mean terminal as in prognosis... although it very well can be.

I'm taking care of a 23 year old girl who is dying the horrible septic abdomen death right now thanks to Chrons disease...

My brother is 24 years old and was diagonsed with Chron's Disease at 18, It's horrible. He's had many surgeries, parts of the intestines have been removed.

He's receiving Remicade treatments every 8 weeks i believe.

Best wishes to your bro. Surgery, as you know, is the last option on these patients.. when I have to see them, they are dying.

I feel for anyone who has it. I don't know for a fact, but from watching my brother, He has pain all the time. When it flares up it's like a train wreck. At one point he was down to like 120lbs (normally at 180). He had it throughout his hole digestive system, Which i suppose is pretty bad.

He's been doing good lately though. Remicade helps a lot.

I wish the best for your patient(s).
