Default Domestic violence?

anybody ever broke up a fight my story goes i took on a guy who was arguing with his girlfriend. She was a lot smaller than him, and also bigger than me one of those American X skinheads that seem to grow on trees down here. Lucky for me she stopped it to tell you the truth i had nothing, i always seems to have my box cutter with me, but lately i been leaving it at home.. I gave her the whole you don't need this, but as on lookers came she stil left with him, then the cops came, but as usually too late.

anybody have similar stories to tell?

Uh, no. I wouldn't ever intervene unless it was an assault. Call the police if you think it may escalate to something worse.

Call the police. Is she going to help you when you've got a knife sticking out of your kidney? No... she'll probably rationalize getting back together with her abuser (again).

Were you armed? If you're going intervene in any dispute these days, that would be a good thing to be, if not I think I would call the police.

You better be careful when breaking up domestic violence. Although it is despicable, women have been known to turn around and attack the "peacekeeper". It is my understanding to cops are trained to be aware of both sides when breaking them up.

Now, as to why women stay with violent men, there is a lot of literature on the subject, and the reasons are multifaceted (e.g. self-esteem, financial, don't know better, conditioned, history, drama*, etc.).

*The film Take My Eyes tries to explore this issue.

My experence with wife beaters is that they are "f-ing" cowards.
I was in a bar in Michigan about 3 weeks ago, this couple is sitting at the bar fighting, the guy grabs the woman's cell phone and slams it on the ground. I pick-up the phone and walk over and hand it back to him, and just say "what's up?" He has nothing to say, I keep watching to see whats up, looked to me like he calmed down, I guess you never know what happens later...

Yeah, I was hero once....once. A long time ago, I grabbed a guy in a bar who slapped his girlfriend (wife?) to the floor. I pushed him on the floor face first and the next thing I knew I was being kicked in the ribs, side of the head, legs.... by his girlfriend who he just knocked the sh*t out of.

My friends were all real understanding, they all had side aches from laughing so hard.

You're lucky she didn't turn on you, too, or tell the cops you started things. That's usually what happens in those situations. You're not a trained lawman and you have no authority, and a box cutter in your hands when the police roll up is not a good idea.

Obviously you have to use your judgement in any given situation. If I saw a girl who was actually being beaten in the street, I'm sure my instincts would take over and I would intervene, but an argument? Not my business.

Look, domestic violence is the single most dangerous crime that police respond by % injured. No one knows WHAT they are walking into, not even the police who have special training, weapons, and Vests.

I would never advise physically intervening in a domestic dispute unless it was life and death and you are willing to die helping. Get on your cell phone first to 911 and announce you are calling the police.

EXACTLY. I have friends that are cops and their number one dreaded call is a domestic dispute. One of my friends got brained by a frying pan that knocked him out cold. He was a rookie, made a rookie mistake, and turned his back on the battered spouse. He got thumped on the head by the wife that 5 minutes before was fearing for her life. Fortunately, he had a partner, otherwise he woulda been in deep trouble.

The fact is that many people are in relationships that while they may not "like" them, they are indeed comfortable with their current state of affairs. That is why you will see women (mostly women, but a few men) leave one jerk and bounce to another. Kinda reminds me of the Eurythmics song... "some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused." My father treated my mother poorly for almost 30 years, then walked out the door one day never to return, and there are still days that she pines for him. Unbelieveable.

Without a doubt, you have to exercise caution in a situation like that.

I'm a firm believer that I'm in certain places at certain times for a reason. One thing I can't stand is physical abuse towards women. I don't care who you are, if I see you hit a lady you're going to get 250 lbs of a very passionate person in your face REAL quick. Not trying to sound like a tough guy, but that's just where I stand. If i'm there and it happens, I'm going to asses the situation and go for it. If I get my ass kicked...fine. At least I did it trying to help someone.

Calm yourself, I was kist kidding.

Im pretty much in agreement. Yelling no, beating yes I will intervene and if the stupid whore Im helping decides to take her anger out on me, I will proceed to whoop her ass too. Afterall, I am for treating women EQUALLY in society.

Intervening in a domestic violence situation is a good way to get yourself into trouble. Even if the man and woman don't team up against you and kick your butt, if you hit the guy, you run the risk of being arrested for assault when someone does the correct thing and calls the cops. Police are well trained to deal with such situations, but they're almost always dispatched with backup; not alone. And they have pepper spray and tasers...

I will not stand idly by while a guy beats a woman just to wait for the cops to show up 30 minutes to an hour later.

Somethings in life are worth going to jail for.

It's always best not to get involved. There's a good chance they are only actors simply filming a scene for a Lifetime TV movie. Then you'd feel really silly!
