Panthers | Police and courts: R. Manning Jr.
Mon, 24 Apr 2006 05:39:44 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Carolina Panthers restricted free agent CB Ricky Manning Jr. was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, April 23, in Los Angeles and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a melee at a Denny's restaurant left a patron unconscious. He was bailed out of jail, and Los Angeles Police Department detective Robert Lewis said late Sunday that a court date has not been set. According to Lewis, Manning was in a group that attacked a man in the restaurant after teasing him for working on a laptop computer. The group fled the restaurant, but the car Manning was in was pulled over by officers just blocks from the scene in Westwood Village near the campus of UCLA, where he played in college. Manning Jr. recently signed an offer sheet with the Chicago Bears.

This is surprising to me. Manning had a rep as a high character person. He went into the draft rated as a round 6+ prospect, downgraded because of his size. He/his agents produced a cd that was distributed to all of the teams that had footage of him covering large receivers and illustrating his technique. He showed up for all interviews in a suit and tie. As a result of his efforts, he was drafted in round 3 and his career was off to a good start in Carolina.

Sad to hear...I went to Ricky Manning's high school rival in Fresno, CA...He was a two sport star and always looked to be a thug...I guess this means that Carolina will let him walk, no problem...and the Bears FO is like, WTF were we thinking??

I read that they were picking on a guy because he was using a laptop. When the guy asked an employee to intervene he was beaten for his efforts.

Sounds like class act doesn't it?
