Report: Kings take Avery off ice for season

The Los Angeles Kings have decided to part ways with Sean Avery after an argument with assistant coach Mark Hardy during practice Wednesday, a team source told the Los Angeles Times.

Avery did not travel with the team to Phoenix after meeting with general manager Dave Taylor and interim coach John Torchetti after practice.

A spokesman for the team said Avery would not play the remainder of the season or postseason, but was not suspended.

"We're moving on without him," the spokesman told the paper. "We have informed Sean of this."

The incident occurred during a Wednesday workout. Avery was asked by Hardy to do a drill, refused and was told to leave the ice. The two exchanged words, but it did not become physical, according to the paper.

Wednesday was just the latest headline-maker for Avery this season.

In September, Avery's comments about French-Canadian players earned him a reprimand from the NHL.

In October, Avery was accused of using a racial slur directed toward the Oilers' Georges Laraque. In Novemeber, Avery was fined for diving in a game, and then fined again for criticizing his original fine.

Last week, Avery exchanged words with Ducks color commentator Brian Hayward in the locker room, a situation that left other Kings players privately saying they had enough of Avery's antics.

Something tells me that he'll be playing in Toronto next year and he'll be Don Cherry's favorite player.

I figured he and Theo Fleury would be the English League version of the Bruise Brothers.

Might have a little something to do with him being French Canadian. Grapes tends to be a bit partial to western Canadian players.

Does he? I don't follow cherry much.

I wish crosby and ovechkin played their final meeting at the end of the year. It would give me something to look forward too..... besides malkin next year.

I really like phanuf's game, this kid is a great player - i also like keith ballard in PHO - The west has some good youngsters out there - and Thorton is hitting his potential out in SJ. He must have been too laid back to play in boston.

Thornton's late push is going to make the Hart Trophy voting very interesting. The consensus was that Jagr pretty much had it wrapped up, but Thornton's surge in the points race as well as the Sharks surge up the standings is going to make some people think twice.

As I've said before, the Thornton trade is ultimately going to go down as one of the worst in NHL history.

This is pretty funny...

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Kings' frustration over their slide out of the playoff race became palpable Friday when Sean Avery had a heated verbal exchange with commentator Brian Hayward in the dressing room.

Hayward calls games for the Mighty Ducks. He criticized Avery during Tuesday's broadcast and accused hiim of running away from a confrontation with the Ducks' Todd Fedoruk.

Hayward visited the locker room to do prep work. Upon seeing Hayward, Avery unleashed a profanity-laced tirade. "You're an embarrassment", Avery said.

Hayward, a former NHL goalie, responded, "You want to see an embarrassment? Look in the mirror, Sean."

Avery said, "You're the reason the league doesn't have a national television deal. You're a (terrible) announcer and you were a (terrible) player." Hayward responded, "How would you know? When I played, you were in your third year of eighth grade."

Default Colorado Avalanche vs. Calgary Flames

GAME: Colorado Avalanche (43-28-8) at Calgary Flames (45-24-10).

TIME: Thursday, 9 p.m. EDT.

The Calgary Flames look to clinch their first division title in 11 years when they host a Colorado Avalanche team that will be making its 11th straight appearance in the postseason.

Calgary, 6-0-2 in its last eight games, needs one point in its final three contests to win the Northwest Division crown. The Flames haven't taken a division title since winning the Pacific in 1994-95.

Colorado, meanwhile, earned a spot in the playoffs when Vancouver lost 5-4 in overtime to San Jose on Wednesday. The win also put the Sharks in the postseason.

Calgary reached 100 points for the first time since 1990-91 with a 3-0 win over Anaheim on Tuesday.

Miikka Kiprusoff made 32 saves for his league-leading ninth shutout and Daymond Langkow scored a record goal and added two assists for the Flames, who also got a pair of assists from captain Jarome Iginla.
<A TARGET="_top" HREF="http://ad.doubleclick.net/click%3Bh=v5|33c6|3|0|%2a|m%3B30593219%3B0-0%3B0%3B6467436%3B4307-300|250%3B15793727|15811622|1%3B%3B%7Esscs%3D%3fht tp://www.mastercard.com/crew_at_the_cup"><IMG SRC="http://m.2mdn.net/933478/300x250.gif" BORDER=0></A>

"Kipper, he's played like that all year," Iginla said. "He's been amazing."

Langkow's goal came five seconds into the third, the fastest goal in team history at the start of a period and just one second off the NHL record set by Montreal's Claude Provost in 1957 and Chicago's Denis Savard in 1986.

Colorado has alternated wins and losses in its last 12 contests and hasn't won back-to-back games since a three-game run from March 7-12.

In a 6-4 victory over Phoenix on Tuesday, goaltender Jose Theodore won his first game with the Avalanche and Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist in his return to lead a Colorado offense that totaled 34 shots and went 3-for-9 on the power play.

Theodore, acquired from Montreal for goaltender David Aebischer on March 8, was recovering from a fractured right heel suffered during the Olympic break and didn't see his first action until he relieved Peter Budaj in a 5-2 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

The former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner made 21 saves against the Coyotes, but did allow three third-period goals in a span of 6:21.

"He got some deflections that were unfortunate, but tonight, the way he moved on the 5-on-3 was a great illustration of what he is capable of and he kept us in the game," Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said.

Tanguay played for the first time since spraining his right knee on March 19.

Avalanche captain Joe Sakic had his point streak snapped at 13 games, a run that began with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over the Flames on March 12. He has six goals and four assists in seven games against Calgary this season.

STANDINGS: Avalanche - 94 points, 2nd place, 6 PB, Northwest Division. Flames - 100 points, 1st place, Northwest Division.

TEAM LEADERS: Avalanche - Sakic, 31 goals, 54 assists and 85 points; Ian Laperriere, 114 PIM. Flames - Iginla, 34 goals and 65 points; Langkow, 34 assists; Darren McCarty, 115 PIM.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Avalanche - Power play: 19.4 percent (89 for 458), 6th in NHL. Penalty killing: 84.0 percent (363 for 432), 7th. Flames - Power play: 18.7 percent (86 for 461), 9th. Penalty killing: 84.0 percent (405 for 482), 8th.

GOALTENDERS: Avalanche - Budaj (14-10-6, 2 SO, 2.86 GAA); Theodore (18-16-5, 3.47). Flames - Kiprusoff (41-20-10, 9, 2.12); Brian Boucher (4-7-0, 4.16).

SEASON SERIES: Flames, 4-3.

LAST MEETING: March 31; Flames, 6-3. At Calgary, Alberta, Chris Simon, Shean Donovan and Matthew Lombardi each had a goal and an assist, and Kiprusoff made 23 saves. Sakic scored twice for Colorado.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Avalanche - 18-18-2 on the road; Flames - 29-7-4 at home.

He's a maritimer from Nova Scotia but did play in the QMJHL and I think he does speak French as a second language to some extent.

I admire Don Cherry for his ability to stick up for Canada.BUT it seems that in his old age he's become more cantankerous and narrowminded.

Grapes doesn't like hot dogs and that lacrosse style goal that Crosby scored qualified him as such is Grape's view. It peed him off because Crosby's team had a huge lead at the time he scored the highlight goal.

To me the league needs the talents of Ovechkin and Crosby to shine as bright as possible to bring the NHL back from the fringes of professional sport. Grapes and his Maple Leaf/goon style bias has got to take a hike. I just hope the CBC wakes up to this reality someday too.

Alexander Ovechkin nets his 50th goal on the season in the first period against Atlanta. He's the first rookie to score 50 since Teemu Selanne in 92-93.

Thats a very cool pick of AO. Wouldnt be surprised if it was Herc's new avatar.

Congrats on goal #50, Herc.

Sid with 1g and 1a so far against the Rangers, with half the game to play. Up to 95 points. 5 more, Sid!!

EDIT: Crosby adds another assist. 3 points on the night. 96 points. 4 more to go, Sid!!

What a great year for these young offensive guns to get their start. They'll never know the joys of being constantly clutched and grabbed, hooked, smacked and playing an entire game in the neutral zone...

Poor things...
