I was too. I think of the 05 picks, Stastny is the most ready.

Fritsche might be a possible signing as well. There was a rumor that he was going to bolt to the OHL after this past World Junior Championships.

We've done an NFL draft, and we're doing an MLB draft; why not an NHL one?

I started one in the NHL forum if anyone's interested. Thought I'd mention it.

I wonder if Stastny will be able to talk Liles out of #26? It'd be pretty cool to see him wearing his father's number in the pros.

So I was reading ESPN the Mag today and was in Stu Scott's little section. Someone asked who was the best captain ever He said Messier. With Stevie Y second.

Stevie would have gotten my nod over Messier.....or am I retarded? ( No one answer that last part honestly. I couldn't take the truth right now. )

We don't need a washed up troublemaker like Recchi. And he was like -30 or something during his time with the Penguins last year.

I f'ing hate the Detroit Red Wings. I simply hate them. During the 2002 playoffs when the Avs should have doubled up...I was screaming for the Avs as a whole to put the body to an obviously crippled Yzerman.

I hate the Red Wings....but when it comes to my personal who do you want on your team list...Stevie Y is right up there with the great John Elway...

Joe Sakic will retire in his league though...they're similar types of guys...

I loved to hate Stevie Y.

I hate the Winger Dingers as much as the next Avs fan, but I have all the respect in the world for Stevie. Its hard to hate a guy like him. And yes I wholeheartedly agree, Joe should be in that class too. Of course I'm biased.

You're not biased at all Mt...you just understand greatness. Super Joe and Stevie Y are very comparable...a la they both kick ass.

EJ Hradek's blog about the Avs:

Quote:
Do you ever get the feeling you walked into the room about five minutes too late? That's how new Avalanche GM Francois Giguere might feel.

The Avs, a league power since the mid-1990s, are transitioning into the salary cap era. Last summer, they waived goodbye to longtime stars Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote, who both bolted via free agency. This summer, Colorado lost Rob Blake, who signed a free-agent deal with the Kings. Veteran grinder Dan Hinote also skipped town, signing a three-year deal in St. Louis. In the pre-cap NHL, the Avs likely would have re-signed all four players.

Giguere's first major trade also had salary cap implications. On draft day, he sent high-scoring winger Alex Tanguay to the Flames for defenseman Jordan Leopold. The club just couldn't afford to pay Tanguay, who would've eventually followed other stars out of Denver. Fortunately, Leopold is a solid defender who'll help fill the void left by Blake's departure.

Captain Joe Sakic re-upped for another season. Barring something unforeseen, Sakic appears to be the only star from the club's glory days that will finish out his career with the Avs. Sakic, who turned 37 earlier in the month, still has game. In 2005-06, he was the team's leading scorer, posting 87 points while playing in all 82 games. In the playoffs, Sakic's strong play keyed the Avs' first-round upset of the Stars.

Despite the departure of Tanguay, the Avs still should be able to light the lamp. (Sorry about that cliché, but sometimes I just can't help it.) Right wings Milan Hejduk and Marek Svatos are very good in the offensive zone and veteran left wings Andrew Brunette and Steve Konowalchuk do a nice job below the dots. Brunette has a nose for the net, while Konowalchuk returns after missing most of the season with a wrist injury.

With a need for a second center, Giguere took a one-year ($950,000) flier on free-agent pivot Tyler Arnason. The 27-year-old Arnason was a bust with the Senators after the club acquired him from the Blackhawks at the trade deadline. Arnason enjoyed his best year during the 2003-04 season, scoring 22 goals and 55 points in Chicago. With his career on the line, Arnason will have to perform or spend a lot of time on a minor league. Perhaps, that's just the kind of urgency he needs.

Of course, Giguere's success or failure likely will rest on the shoulders of goaltender Jose Theodore. The former Habs star was acquired by longtime GM Pierre Lacroix -- who remains as club president -- just a day before the trade deadline. Can Theodore regain the form that helped him win the Hart and Vezina trophies in 2002? If he can, the Avs again will compete for a playoff spot. If he struggles, Giguere's first season as GM might coincide with the club's first season without a playoff berth since 1994.

Like I said, sometimes you feel like you walked in the room a little too late.

EJ knows something we don't? Well, we know Svatos is good in the offensive zone. We just don't know for what team....

Or for how long before he has a shoulder go south on him.

Billion Dollar Eddie signs a one year deal with the Panthers

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=172336&hubname=

Ales Hemsky re-signs with the Oilers. It's a six year deal. No report on the dollar figures, but it's rumored to be four million per year. Nice to see a player take a cap friendly deal to help out his club.

Gomez awarded 5 million

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=172350&hubname=

A bit surprising considering that's the same amount Briere received. I thought Scott would get 5.5+. The Devils will be making trades as they still have to sign Brian Gionta (48 goals last year) and David Hale. If they accept the Gomez ruling, it will put them at 46 million.

Hemsky receives 24.6 million over six years. A nice cap friendly contract.

Only one thing wrong with Eddie signing in Florida. I will miss the chance to hear all the Wing fans suddenly have to do a 360 to realign their loyalties. Now they'll probably get Hasek back and we've already lived through that spin.

Buh bye Scotty, no way they're gonna choose to keep you and trade Gionta.

It's a bit refreshing to know that we're not the only ones who screwed ourselves with dead money on the cap.

Devils will accept the award ruling in the Gomez case.

http://www.nypost.com/sports/devils/...rk_everson.htm

Not a surprise, this just means Gomez wont become a UFA. He could still be on the move, or perhaps NJ trades a guy like Rafalski. Nevertheless, the Devils will be making some moves.

He's good but he's fragile. He's made for the new NHL though. Your team hurt itself when it traded youth & prospects for older (albiet very very good) talent (for the most part, every GM makes some bad moves).

If you had cap space it wouldn't be an issue - but you guys might have to bite it for a year or two.

it would help if our former GM had a clue about the CBA and salary cap
