It's not all that different than before, just on a slightly smaller scale. Remember, under the old system guys like Bill Guerin and Bobby Holik were signing contracts worth $9 million per season.

Briere's contract was nuts. According to TSN it was based on the salary contracts offered to players like Havlat. It's crap like this that makes me wonder why the NHL even had a lockout. Too bad they can't have reverse arbitration when the player sucks and the team wants to recoup some of their mis-spent money.
Hey Icon, I'm guessing you're a Flames fan.. any word on Daniel Ryder's progress at their prospects camp??

Under the new CBA, teams do have the option of taking players to arbitration. However, no teams elected that option this year.

I'm a Blackhawks fan first, Flames fan second; it's close though, and the Hawks don't do much worth cheering about these days anyways.

Right now, he's got an invite to the Canadian National Junior Team Development Camp...He won't be on our roster for another year or two yet, though.

I dont mind the signing, the mistake was that we paid 1.1 million for avery. Not what I expected at all, was hoping for 750,000 or 800,000 deal. I dont mind the signing because it is one year and DL said Avery is on thin ice. So one of two things will happen, Avery reaches his potential or he gets cut. Its that simple.

Avs sign Paul Stastny and Ken Klee.

Bitter-sweet feeling in regards to Stastny. I felt he needed one more year of school and as a DU fan, this is a significant blow to their title hopes.

I think you summed it up pretty well, Jori, there's mixed feelings on this one. I thought Stastny would be better off spending one more year at DU, but obviously both he and the Avs feel that he's ready to make the jump. Hopefully it's to play with the big club, as I don't see him benefitting that much playing in Albany when he could have stayed in school. I am excited at the prospect of him being in the Avs lineup this year, though. I guess we'll see.

Ken Klee? What? Was Aki Berg demanding too much money? Talk about your useless, over the hill signings......but then the Avs have become famous for that in the last two years.

“Paul brings a great deal of speed, skill and potential to the organization,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President & General Manager Francois Giguere. “Obviously his college accomplishments speak for themselves and we look forward to watching him continue to develop.”

If they stick him in the minors, I'm going to be three shades of pissed off. Expect a full-scale meltdown from me if that happens.

You wont be the only one who is pissed. Imagine how George Gwozdecky is feeling right now. Sign the kid and then stick him in the AHL? Thank goodness Tyler Ruegsegger came in a year early.

Still unless they dump Turgeon, I'm not sure where Paul is going to fit. Though on the bright side, we could potentially have three Pioneers in the lineup this year with Laaksonen, Stastny and Rycroft

I can't believe Statsny signed. The upcoming Pioneers season just went drastically downhill. I was so hoping to see DU play at the Pepsi Center for the 2007 West Regional, but now that looks like a remote possibility without Stats.

Stastny, Carle & Gauthier are now gone from last years team. That's a serious exodus of talent.

I'm happy for Stastny, I really am and I'll be even happier if he makes the big club. But I feel bad for Coach Gwoz as he's been put in kind of a pickle now that his best player has jumped ship.

Wolski & Stastny on a line together is a pretty intriguing proposition, though.

I wonder if they're considering signing TJ Hensick out of Michigan.

It hurts big time, but DU can still make the tournament if the freshmen can contribute and the goaltending is more consistent. One thing this year's squad had that last year's didn't was depth. Luckily for Denver, NoDak, CC and Wisconsin have also suffered losses and it's a strong possibility that Kessel will sign with the Bruins.

What's funny was that I was about to pay for my West Regional/ FF tickets. I'm still going to buy them. Regardless of whether Denver is in the tourney or not, it's still a great experience to go to one these tournaments.

I don't think losing Statsny this year will hurt as much as Skinner last year because the forward corps is deeper this season than the defense last season. Still, this is a huge loss for the Pios, as we all know. Last year it seemed like it was Carle, Statsny and Dingle that did all the scoring. Only Dingle is left. Ouch.

I'll still be going to the 2007 regional and 2008 Frozen Four. I wouldn't miss those for the world.

I agree, the forward depth is much better then last year. I'm really excited to see Rakhshani, Ruegsegger and a healthy Brock Trotter.
