Joe Sakic's agent sounds optimistic that he and the Colorado Avalanche will come to terms on a new contract before the longtime captain becomes a free agent on July 1. "I think we're all hopeful that this thing's going to get done," Don Baizley said Tuesday from his office in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sakic, who turns 37 on July 7, just completed his 17th NHL season - all with the Quebec/Colorado franchise. His 13-season tenure as captain is the second-longest in the NHL, behind Detroit's Steve Yzerman, who is pondering retirement. Sakic led the franchise in scoring for the 11th time, recording 32 goals and 87 points while playing in all 82 regular-season games. He tied Andrew Brunette for the team lead in the playoffs with four goals and nine points in nine games. Every team in the NHL would have a crack at signing Sakic with no compensation due the Avalanche if he were to become an unrestricted free agent. "I don't think that's the issue so much as just getting down to the nuts and bolts of it," Baizley said. "We had some (contract) discussions before the playoffs and we agreed that we would continue them after the playoffs." Sakic made $6.664 million this year, and the team has 10 players under contract for next season totaling about $19 million, though a few players could be bought out at two-thirds of their 2006-07 salaries. Pierre Lacroix said that re-signing Sakic was a priority. Baizley said "nothing new" has happened since Lacroix's news conference, adding: "I'm sure once he gets some of these things off his plate, we'll be talking again. We've just got to work it out." Avalanche executive Michel Goulet, whose title is special assistant to the president, is believed to be a candidate for the general manager position, but Baizley said he expects Lacroix would remain heavily involved in talks regarding Sakic. Sakic and his wife, Debbie, are very active in the Denver community, and he has said he would like to finish his career in Denver. "I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's what happened, that he finish his career there," Baizley said. "We'll be back at these discussions in the not too distant future, that's for sure." Rob Blake, Bob Boughner, Brett Clark, Jim Dowd and Karlis Skras-tins also are potential unrestricted free agents. |

Not a big surprise....Roy is ruling himself out for the Avs GM Post:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=166178&hubname=nhl Roy won't be a candidate for Avs GM job Patrick Roy Canadian Press 5/17/2006 3:31:08 PM Goaltending legend Patrick Roy seemed to rule himself out of the running for the vacant Colorado Avalanche GM job Wednesday, saying he's not ready for that kind of challenge at this point in time. "I don't think it'd be fair to myself or to Colorado," Roy told The Canadian Press. "I don't think I'm ready to step up (to the NHL). I've got a lot of things to learn. And I'm extremely happy. I think it would be greedy to go up (to the NHL) right now and not feel 100 per cent ready." Roy is busy preparing his Quebec Remparts for the Memorial Cup junior hockey showcase in Moncton, N.B., which begins Friday night with Quebec facing the OHL champion Peterborough Petes. Roy, coach, GM and part-owner of the Remparts, saw his name mentioned in rumours the moment Pierre Lacroix stepped down as GM in Colorado last Friday. But the four-time Stanley Cup champion with Montreal and Colorado says he has no idea what will happen in Denver. "Some people have mentioned Michel Goulet (as a replacement)," Roy said of the Avalanche executive. "But to me, I don't know what Pierre will do for his replacement. I'm sure he's going to find someone that will do a good job. If it's Michel Goulet, Pierre will help to develop him as a very good GM." Goulet, 46, is the assistant to the president with Colorado and has held different positions with the club over the past nine seasons. He was also a star winger with the franchise when the team was still the Quebec Nordiques. Lacroix, who will remain on as president of the Avalanche, has indicated he has a candidate in mind and would name his successor before the June 24 NHL draft in Vancouver. Dallas Stars assistant GM Francois Giguere has also been mentioned as a possible candidate. The 43-year-old was assistant GM to Lacroix in Colorado from 1995 to 2001 before joining the Stars. |

Matt Carle almost scores for SJ.
The Oilers are 1 period from the Western Finals if they can maintain this slender lead.

2-0. Horcoff goal.
Oilers vs. Ducks. Should be a good series.

Wow, the Edmonton win makes it so much worse as an Avs fan realizing now that we would have had the home advantage if we would have advanced to the Conference finals. Damn, what a strange Western Conference playoffs.

Eastern Conference Finals
(2) Carolina Hurricanes versus (4) Buffalo Sabres Western Conference Finals (6) Mighty Ducks of Anaheim versus (8) Edmonton Oilers I'm sure NBC and OLN are crying right now, but real hockey fans are in for a treat. With San Jose out, my loyalty goes 100% behind Buffalo. My picks: Buffalo in six Anaheim in seven I question how much Edmonton will have left in the tank. They could have enough momentum to steal game one as the Ducks have been off for a week. Anaheim can win in front of a hostile crowd so I don't expect them to be intimidated like the young San Jose team in the games in Edmonton. Edmonton's PK will be a major factor, but I still like the Ducks in a long series. Buffalo/Carolina is too close to call. Buffalo seems to have that aura around them right now. This may be tiresome, but you can't ignore the Chris Drury factor |

Anaheim being off for so long will allow Edmonton to win Game 1. Too much rust. But Anaheim will win 4 of the next 5 to take it in 6.
Buffalo over Carolina also in 6. These arent sexy matchups but still should be good ones.

I did pretty well picking the first round and then go 0-4 in the second. Ouch.
Edmonton vs. Anaheim and Buffalo vs. Carolina. None of those teams made the playoffs in 2004. |

Yikes...I guess I must have caught Mulletroseitis.
Speaking of the Mullet, he has picked Edmonton and Carolina to win their respective conference finals. |
