Wow. The Sharks just got a bonafide franchise player to entering his prime to build around. Nice move by San Jose.

He'll fit in. The Sharks now have a dynamic 1-2 punch down the middle with Thornton & Marleau (who were picked #1 & #2 in the '97 draft) and have Selke finalist Alyn McCauley on their 3rd line. They've got talented wingers like Cheechoo and Michalek to go along with them. Great move by San Jose.

I'm now wondering if the Avs, who're in need of a 2nd line winger, can pry Murray or Samsonov out of there for a bag of magic beans.

Sharks stole Thornton, IMO. Sharks had to do something, though.

Seems the sharks needed defensemen as well with 80 GA 3rd to last in the NHL so iam guessing they are not done trading, this move will help their GF which was 3rd to last as well.

if they need dmen, then why rid themselves of stewart?

Thorton has always been 'iffy' - he's not done what he's capable of

They may not make the playoffs this year, but Brad Stuart will be forgotten quickly once the Sharks bring in Matt Carle. I think Carle will forgo his senior season and join San Jose next year.

Maybe another trade is coming up to fill the defensive problem?

Unfortunately, I read that there is a clause in his contract that said he cant be traded to ANYONE in Year 1.

Sucks I know.

The entire organization's only real defensive defenseman is in Wilkes-Barre right now (Welch). How sad is that.

Your right. I should have said competent defensive defenseman though instead.

Hooks is good for about 5 mental mistakes and 2 penalties per game.

I know you love the guy, and he was good back in 03-04, a very promising youngster but he doesnt fit in the new NHL. He's the kind of defenseman that the league is trying to kill off. He doesnt move well, he grabs, he hits, he's just a big physical ogre. I dont think he can survive in this new style of league. He's looked absolutely awful this year. He did look a bit better the last game when they paired him up with Whitney, but he's just been awful when he has been paired up with Gonchar or Jackman or Melichar. I think the future is Whitney and Welch.

Hopefully he can hold his own tonight against NYR.

See i think with brooks, is that he's doing "TOO" much in order to 'cover' for the other gaffe's that are going on with the team. He does have some lapses - but i don't think you can give up on a guy who can give a solid 10yrs in the league.

this was my thought. Our problem thus far has ben the defensemen, but our special teams needed a HUGE shot in the arm and we may have gotten that. The only problem, sturm was a fan favorite and my man P-Speed was hard to contain at times.

Default Flames acquire Huselius from Panthers

The Calgary Flames gave a boost to its offence on Friday, acquiring forward Kristian Huselius from the Florida Panthers for defenceman Steve Montador and centre Dustin Johner.

Huselius, who scored 43 goals in his first two NHL seasons, was passed over by the league's 29 other teams after the Panthers placed him on waivers earlier this week.

The 27-year-old winger, with just five goals and eight points in 24 games, is making $1.216 million this season.

Montador, 25, has played in 94 careerNHL games, registering nine points and 201 PIM. He appeared in 20 of the Flames' 26 contests during the 2004 playoffs scoring one goal with two assists, averaging more than 17 minutes of ice time with a plus-4 rating. Montador is making $450,000 this season.

Washington trades goaltender Maxime Ouellet to Vancouver for a 5th rounder.
