Default 1st Rd. Mock (by me)

Just threw this together in a few minutes, one potential way I think the draft could play out, hinges heavily on the Jets/Saints deal.

1. Reggie Bush (Hou)
2. Matt Leinart (NYJ)*
3. Mario Williams (Ten)
4. AJ Hawk (NO)*
5. Vernon Davis (DEN)@
6. D'Brickashaw Ferguson (SF)
7. Vince Young (Oak)
8. Brodrick Bunkley (BUF)
9. Winston Justice (PHI)^
10. Ernie Sims (AZ)
11. Mike Huff (STL)
12. Kamerion Wimbley (CLE)
13. Haloti Ngata (BAL)
14. Jimmy Williams (DET)^
15. Chad Greenway (GB)@
16. Donte Whitner (MIA)
17. Jay Cutler (MIN)
18. Jason Allen (DAL)
19. Johnathan Joseph (SD)
20. Ty Hill (KC)
21. Manny Lawson (NE)
22. Antonio Cromartie (SF)
23. Marcus McNeill (TB)
24. Tamba Hali (CIN)
25. Bobby Carpenter (NYG)
26. Mercedes Lewis (CHI)
27. DeMeco Ryans (CAR)
28. Deangelo Williams (JAX)
29. Claude Wroten (NO)*
30. Laurence Maroney (IND)
31. Davin Joseph (SEA)
32. Santonio Holmes (Pitt)

* Jets are playing the Saints, knowing they want Hawk.
Saints "cave" and settle for fair value, not a rape job.
4, 29, and an '07 2nd for #2.

@ GB decides to move when they see Hawk and Williams gone.
Denver is the highest team looking to trade up.
Denver sends 15, 37, 68 for 5.
Denver trades Lelie plus a 4th for a late 2nd/early 3rd later.

^ Millen tries to get cute, facilitates a team grabbing Justice.
Gets burnt, takes the "name player" (Williams) when his guy (Huff) is gone.

Sorry, the Vernon Davis move isn't happening. Green Bay wouldn't settle on two-first rounders, why would they for a first, second, third and fifth?

It wasn't about the two first rounders, they want AJ Hawk more than any other player in this draft. If they can't have him though it opens up a whole world of possabilities. The Saints are real big on him though, if they trade with the Jets they'll take him at 4.

IF we trade up to #5 and let Vince Young go to the Raiders at 7 we'll regret it for years. I hope that Tenn takes VY, I don't want to play him twice a year!!!

Good job assessing WR value Drek, you have the 1st one where they should be. None of them are worth anything above 32.

While I agree, Holmes and Jackson will go in the mid 1st. Just means a better player at #37 for us. Unless the above trade goes down, which I woud love. Davis and Lawson are my two targets in the first.

I think that Tenn, GB and SF were right not to trade down pre-draft day. What if Mario does slide to #6? Nolan would be kicking his own ass. Just because they said no does not mean they didnt say call me back when we are on the clock. By trading away #22, Denver now has the ammo in place to deal with every team 3-11 for a player that slides.

Yep, should one of the top 6 suddenly find themselves looking to move down we're the buyer with the highest 1st to offer, 15, and the best crop of supplemental '06 stuff, no waiting to '07 if you make a deal with us.

At this point all the top 6 teams are zeroing in on the guys they think will be theirs. If someone should lose out on their guy I'd bet they'd be willing to drop back a ways and get a lot of other picks in a deep draft, as opposed to taking a second favorite that high in the draft.

You know I would love this or something like it because everyone has been pretty much doing the same things and I believe that this draft is going to be, to quote Strong Bad, "Crazy go nuts." I bet it's trade city this year.

Where the hell would SF use Mario Williams in the 3-4 exactly? I mean if they draft that guy to play DE in the 3-4 or OLB in the 3-4 Williams agent may kill him personally. Andre Carter all over again. Totally freakin wasted draft pick.

OTOH, they could use Hawk and Carpenter in that 3-4. I bet they could get both with 6 and 22 which is why I think they made that trade. If GB gets Hawk, then I agree SF may try to trade down again and DEN still has plenty of picks to get it done

I think SF is all about Vernon Davis, and will look to go defense, LB or DB, at 22. Hawk isn't going to be available to them, the Packers and Saints haven't been real quiet about their interest, and the Jets might like pairing him with Vilma, replacing the presence of Abraham on the weak side of the defense.

This mock is just one way I think this draft could play out, and a very Bronco friendly one at that I might add. Its just as likely that everything goes in line and we see a top 6 of Bush, Williams, Leinart, Ferguson, Hawk, and Davis, in that order, with no trades.

I dont know about CB's, but it could happen with either DLs or maybe WRs.

Last year, Shanny picks up a crap load of DL's from the Browns. He has sifted through the pile and after this season i'm sure whatever he doesn't like will be discarded. He then drafted 3 CB's. He struck gold on 1 and made a great pick on another. Paymah could still wind up a good CB as well. At least better than Roc Head.

My point, Shanny is trying to eliminate the guess work. He could take a RB, a DL, and a WR. But what are the odds that he gets any of the picks right? Now if he drafts three DL or three WR, one of them is bound to turn out.

However, if he goes with a normal approach and drafts 4 to 5 different positions on day one, things will be interesting. This could be the most significant draft in the history of our franchise. If we nail it, we are set for a while. If not, it will still be remembered, but for all the wrong reasons.

man oh man, i can't wait til next weekend. Anyone know where i can find a draft kit sorta thing. Maybe something where i can write the names on dry erase magnetic strips or something? maybe i'll have to create something.
