Default Insane 49ers thought

I just had a really insane thought.

So everyone seems to be thinking that the 49ers are set on taking Vernon Davis....and unless we slip ahead of them, we're not going to be able to go after him.

So I was thinking......What happens to Eric Johnson? A guy like him could'nt just be used in 2 TE sets, I mean he lead the NFC in TE production 2 years back....so what then?

I was wondering what you guys thought of this....but what if we went after him?

One other thing that has not been mentioned is the possibility of a trade with the 49ers post draft for VD ala Elway.

Eric Johnson has been injury proned and when he's healthy, he's solid but not a game breaker. Vernon Davis has that type of ability.

I think EJ can be a decent No. 2 TE with Davis aboard.

Actually, his skills suit what you want in a decent No. 2 TE.

After all this time, isn't it about time that people get over mourning the loss of VD and begin to look at the strengths of Lewis, Pope and Klop or Fasano? It is my sad duty to tell you all that, in the foreseeable future, VD ain't coming to Denver except to play against the Broncos.

I don't know, I just can't see Shanahan losing sleep over his production at the TE position. He's smart enough to know that guys like Sharpe are one in a million. He also knows he's done fairly well at plugging guys in and getting production.

Maybe I'm wrong, I just can't see Shanahan looking at this team and saying... "you know what's holding us back... a tight end."

Wide receiver? Maybe. Of course, I think his answer should be... "well, I have no starting DT, a couple of back-ups at DE... maybe that's the ticket."

Giants and Steelers made big leaps the following season after drafting TE in the first round. A play making Tightend takes pressure off your WR corps to produce, also effects defenses, making the run game more effective. I dont think we get Vernon Davis, but i would be equally happy with Klop, or Thomas, or Fasano, even Pope.

Yeah I think there seems to be a movement towards that with Gates, Shokey, Miller, etc...

Not to mention what VD would do for us in breaking the hold 3 -4 defenses have on our current offensive scheme

Good post, though I'd be more inclined to believe that the progress of said quarterbacks was more influential to those offenses than the addition of a new TE.

That said, I've somewhat softened on my stance on Davis. I figure since we're not going to take the d-line seriously, at least Davis would give us the shot at a blue-chip player.

My point still remains, I just don't see Shanahan paying that kind of money (and using that many draft picks) on a rookie tight end. But, I could be wrong. It's happened before.

I think we did attempt to manouver into the top 5 but no-one was budging. Plus the rumours are rife now that the Jets are seriously considering Davis so the 49ers might not even get him.

Read the Rocky. Denver tried to get the 49ers pick, but they want Davis and refused to give it up. That's why Denver talked to 3 teams ahead of San Fran about trading into their spot. A post draft trade for Davis ain't happening.

GB trade still open, id say go for it, because a guy like VD is once in a million or so. He will be good, and i want it to be for our team.

What we need is another 'receiving' threat. Not necessarily a WR, a TE will work as well.

I will be happy with Lewis or Pope, or Klop, but Davis will be a beast.

like you said, guys like sharpe are one in a million, and shanahan knows that. so why should he miss the opportunity to get another TE with similar talent!

I blame myself....I never should of posted that video. *sobs*

I'm not that high on trading away our 22 either. There will only be so many spots to land on the roster, be have a bunch of kids in the wings hidden in nooks and crannies allready.

22? WTF. The Broncos have the 15, and the 22 went to SF.

On the ESPN show on the draft, Jeff Fisher said that if things worked out with McNair, they might trade down and take a QB in later rounds. Said they'd interviewed "a number of the candidates". I sensed that Fisher wanted McNair to stay, but he seemed to imply that members of the administration are ambivalent about McNair and who to take.

Food for thought. Draft day trades are possible, but I don't know what those might be. Too tired of the whole thing to speculate, I guess.
