SCEE VP says PS3 will cost 499 to 599 euros By Cornelius Wilson on Apr 5, 2006 The president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, George Fornay, is talking price when it comes to the PlayStation 3. In a radio show with France's Europe 1, Fornay said that the PlayStation 3 will sell for between €499 and €599. Fornay acknowledged that the price may seem steep, but he emphasized that that price should be seen as inexpensive when one considers that the console will also play Blu-ray movies. Fornay also confirmed that Sony would be going for a simultaneous launch of the console in November of this year. Strict currency translation suggests that American pricing may be in the range of US $605 to $726, but currency exchange alone can't tell the story. Case in point: the Xbox 360. In the United States, the Xbox 360 retails for $399, which is only €320 in exchange. Yet the Xbox 360 is priced at €399 throughout most of Europe. If the PlayStation 3 follows the Xbox 360, the console may arrive in North America for US $499 to $599. This would easily make the PS3 the most expensive console on the market, with Microsoft's two next-gen systems coming in at $399 and $299. To round out the scene, recall that Nintendo is looking to launch the Revolution for less than $300. With the Xbox 360 priced at $399 and a potential PS3 pricing of at least $499, the days of multi-console ownership may be coming to an end for many gamers. Or, perhaps not. Mario and friends may not be everyone's first choice when it comes to this next round of console action, but with most observers expecting inexpensive games on top of a fairly priced console, Nintendo may reap dividends for its strategy. |

true and my loyalties lye with the playstaions at least they dont screw there fan base and rush to release a system and then run out of them so that only a select few can have and then make the rest of the country wait for about a year before they come out again. that was really bad planning and a bad marketing scheme. IMO

That was complete with a 17 inch flatscreen ect.
My 20 inch stereo flatscreen was 96 bucks with front jacks. It's getting unreal how cheap this stuff is. I spent 450 bucks for a mitsu TV in the 70's and it was 13 inches. 1600 for my first computer that was 200, 2 gigs. Last edited by watermock; 04-18-2006 at 09:55 AM.. |

1. Fornay was misquoted and then mistranslated, he said that the PS3 was superior value to the 399-499 blu-ray players that would soon be hitting the market, but that marketing it as such was not feasable. Fornay was not making a definitive statement about European pricing, which will come from Phil Harrison, head Euro guy for Sony and now head of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide, the game development arm of Sony Computer Entertainment. SCE is still ran by Ken Kutaragi, who will likely be the person to announce retail price for all three regions at the upcoming E3 video game show.
2. This is really damn old and was debunked less than a week after it hit the gaming press. 3. Video game systems tend to not conform to exchange rates. The PS2 was priced at $300 for its U.S. launch, and 300 Euro when it hit the PAL markets. The Xbox did the same, as did the PS1, Saturn, Genesis, SNES, etc.. I think the Gamecube and N64 are the only systems to shift PAL pricing, and that was marginal. Obviously this leads to inflated retail pricing in these markets compared to the U.S., which is an intentional effort on the part of hardware manufacturers, holding the smaller PAL markets hostage. Some think that might very well change this generation, since the PAL regions have grown to surpass the Japanese video game market and is very close to the NTSC market (U.S., Canada, Virgin Islands, Mexico). 4. The PS3 is going to include a base linux kernel, a 60 GB HDD, wirless NIC, wireless controllers, HDMI output, and a blu-ray drive. It will be gratuitously expensive, at least initially, and still will be near impossible to find since Sony is planning a worldwide launch in early November (they claim the 11th currently). The system will likely be region free because of this and the lack of region encoding on blu-ray currently, but the expected global supply will probably be <3 million, Sony could retail at $750 and still sell every last one of the damn things. FYI, my av. is a small shot of Lair, Factor 5's upcoming PS3 launch dragon combat game. It looks re-f'in'-donkulous. Last edited by Drek; 04-18-2006 at 10:10 AM.. |

I'm spending more to keep Beezer in string..I have no clue where he is stashing them. He stashes them. I'm down to my last string, the "caddilac" of all strings, but it's his birthday. I don't know wtf he does with the string. Secret stash is somewhere...but I have no clue.

as for the PS3 my ps2 suits me just fine, its not like i use it a lot so the only way id consider buying a PS3 is if they stopped making games for the PS2 and dropped the price to about 250 for the PS3. Must be nice to be able to afford to pay that much i have more important things to pay for like school gas insurance and other bills. |

on the PS3: I don't care who you are, paying over 700 dollars for a home console is a freakin joke. There is no game ever that could make me justify a purchase like that. |

Microsoft tried to do something never before even attempted, a global launch. It failed, but they didnt screw their "fanbase" as I simply waited. I will never buy another SoreKnee product again as the price does not justify the quality of their products, their customer service is worse than Microsoft's. The planning was great, the vendors didnt hold up to their end of the contracts signed which is why there were shortages in supply. Think SoreKnee would have done better? Think again. They cant even get one working, much less get a supply chain together. |
