Adopt-a-Bronco:
D.J. Williams
Default GBN talks Broncos

By the numbers: 2005 W-L: 13-3; Rankings: Off - 5; R-2; P-18; Def - 15; R-2; P-29

2006 Picks: Total - 8; (1) 15, 22 (2) 61 (4) 119, 126, 130 (5) 161 (6) 198 ... With two first rounders and 3 more picks in the fourth round the Broncos will be one of the teams to watch early at the 2006 draft. Indeed, virtually from the moment Denver moved up from the 29th to the 15th spot as their reward for facilitaing the Jets-Falcons trade involving DE John Abraham, there has been speculation that the Broncos are actually after even bigger fish in the top 10.

Recent draft histroy: There have been almost as many misses as hits for the Broncos in recent draft years. Denver made out big-time last April getting emerging CBs Darrent Williams and Dominique Foxworth in the second and third rounds, respectively, while OLB D.J. Williams, the team's first rounder in 2004, should see his share of Pro Bowls. The Broncos' drafts in the earlier part of the decade, though, haven't produced much to write home about, although OT George Foster (1/2003) and WR Ashley Lelie (1/2002) do start, but have been inconsistent. Meanwhile, TE Jeb Putzier (6/2002) is the last second-day Broncos pick to have made much of an impact.

2006 Needs: The #1 priority for the Broncos to make the jump to the next level is to improve the NFL's 29th rated pass defense. The corners, with youngsters Williams and Foxworth combining with star veteran Champ Bailey, are solid, but the safety spots manned by aging SS John Lynch, who was never all that fast to begin, and journeyman Nick Ferguson need an infusion of speed. Meanwhile, the revamped defensive line did a nice job stuffing the run last season, but got little in the way of consistent pass rush. Indeed, the Broncos had just 28 sacks overall, with no individual player posting more than four. Again, a speed rusher coming off the edge would appear to be high up on the Broncos wish list. The Broncos could also very well be in the market for a top young pass receiver as venerable veteran WR Rod Smith is really getting on in football years, while the afore-mentioned Lelie makes big plays, but just not enough of them. The Broncos could also be looking to upgrade their overall talent level and depth at RB, QB and the offensive line, especially the OG/C spots.

Prognosis: As noted above, the Broncos have positioned themselves to go in any of a number of directions early on the 29th. If they are indeed looking to move up into the top 10, Texas DB Michael Huff or Maryland TE Vernon Davis would be the most likely targets, Huff because he would fill a primary need, while Davis is just a special talent. On the other hand, if the plan is to sit tight with the 15th pick, the Broncos could be looking to select WR Chad Jackson, although with the receiver-challenged Eagles sitting one pick ahead of them, the Broncos might be forced to move up a least a couple of spaces to land the former Florida speedster. And while the Broncos have generally gotten their backs in later rounds, they could find someone like Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams or USC's LenDale White just to hard to pass on at that point, although its just as likely that the Broncos add a back to complement Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne, who combined for over 1,200 yards last fall as reserves, with a later pick. The White situation, though, could be particularly intriguing. The NFL is rife these days with conspiracy theories that some team "in the middle of the first round" orchestrated the dreadful pro day that White, who just happens to be from Denver, put on at the Trojans' pro day so he'd be available when that team picked. And 15th is right in the middle of the first round! Meanwhile, the Broncos could address the pass-rush problem with the 22nd pick overall where Penn State DE Tamba Hali and tweener edge rushers Manny Lawson of NC State and Kamerion Wimbley of Florida State are all likely to still be on the board, although the Broncos could also look at a number of other players at that spot including Oklahoma OG Davin Joseph.

Pretty decent synopsis, but I have to take issue with one thing. Every draft site that talks about the Broncos makes sure to mention that Rod Smith is getting up there in years and that that somehow necessitates the need to take a receiver in round 1. While the fact that Rod is getting older is true, they make no mention of the fact that his production has remained steady over the past several years. He keeps himself in great physical shape, has no history of serious injuries (or even one serious injury for that matter) and has never once even hinted at the possibility of retiring.

So while I won't deny that developing a 3rd receiver should be on the Broncos to do list, I have to disagree with all this talk about how the Broncos should absolutely be looking to get a receiver in round 1 this year. It's not unreasonable to suggest that Rod could give this team 2 or 3 more years of great receiving production as well as his outstanding blocking and leadership.

I'm not against taking a receiver, but I don't believe it to be a need either. Again, BPA at 15 & 22.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but, to be fair, when these guys go, they tend to go quick. Rice and Brown were both coming off solid seasons before their production dropped way off.

I think that this has solidified what I have been thinking since we moved up to 15. I think we go after Hali w/ 22 and a TE (either Fassano or Klopfensomething) with 61. And unless we move up, 15 is a complete mistery. My gut feeling is Shanny feels someone will fall that he wants (prob. not White).
